markhodges1973 - 2011-12-27 9:17 AMIf you go to my log, I gathered everyone's name  and links (except for Lynn - need to open access or friend everyone) to their respective logs and posted them to the top of my page.  You should be able to copy and paste them if you want into your log.  Let me know if I missed anyone.  Hi Joe - thanks for this - what part of your 'training log' did you save this info into?I looked quickly through mine but nothing stands out as obvious? There are so many options within BT menu's it takes some time to understand what does what!! Perhaps because I use a free account not paid? Thanks, Mark.
Check the top of my log. Click on the link below this post and you should see it at top of my log.

I see it thanks!

Which brings up a good question for all, what are some of the biggest challenges that you face in your area in terms of keeping up with your trainings?

Gabe, in my case it is taking the time from the family activities on the weekend to do a long bike ride. Unless it rains for days, weather is not an issue, neither is the security. Running is easy, because 3 hrs is a long run, no matter how you look at it, but it's not enough for a long bike ride. Family activities are usually planned on the weekend, be it some kid's birthday, outing or whatever. Even the very fact that I choose to ride the bike for hours other than spending time with them is a bit of an issue.

I have another one... I live next door to elite athletes and while socialising with them I sense the question: why do you do this? They can't get it. If they don't have a chance to be on the podium, they change the discipline.

But from another angle, it is the challenges that fuel the desire to do things. If everyone had a perfect body, great fitness level, health and felt like hero - I doubt any of us would be here...

Mitch,

Are you following Jorge's plan using power or heart rate?  I'm going to use heart rate, but I'm not sure where to start with my "threshold" heart rate... I think at the end of week 2 or 3 there is the 30 min test, and the average HR from that is used as threshold, but what to use until then?

What type of trainer do you have?  I would use power if at all possible.  If you have a cycle ops or kurt kinetic you can use the power version.  The reason I shy away from the HR is that HR lags and power is instant.  I think in the 2 week prep phase you can use RPE or approx. what your LT HR would be.  I guessed at my current CP for the first two weeks and was pretty much dead on.

I have the most basic TACX trainer.  It has 10 levels of resistance, which coupled with my gear changes, seem to give me a good range of pedaling resistance.  Unfortunately, a power meter is not in the budget for the near term...

I tried to do the first day of Jorge's plan, and noticed just what you mentioned... When I try sets of 20 seconds at threshold with 40 seconds at 70% threshold, it takes the whole 20 seconds to get up to threshold... I recognized this immediately, and I think I can live with it.

The real problem is, the trainer makes an un-godly sound when I get up to any kind of reasonable speed... it sounds like a jet engine revving up (I worked on a flight deck with real fighter jets in the Navy... I know what I'm talking about here...).  It's bad enough that, when I'm in the basement, my wife two floors above, comes downstairs and says "what the hell is going on down here?"

I don't htink it's supposed to be like that... I'm going to tighten every bolt I can find on it, and iof it still makes the noise, take it back and get another model.

So, for now, I'm in experimentation mode, and not true training mode.

If you return your Tacx...and not knowing your budget, I have been very happy with my Kurt Kinetics.  Easy to set-up, reliable, and an established power curve that mimics outdoor riding.  One more thing - Go NAVY!

harmonjh - 2011-12-26 7:15 PM Swimming Question: Right now, my training has consisted of trying to increase the number of 50s I do in a session. My max right now is 10, but the sets after 6 i'm pretty gassed and feel my RPE is pretty high. I feel this would be more anaerobic training Would there be benefits to taking extra rest between sets (for some swim days) to keep my RPE in the lower end? I've tried to swim slower, but can't seem to.

Yes, increasing rest periods between sets will help avoid exhaustion but if 6X50s are getting you gassed up, you're trying too hard. Slow down and focus on your form.

John - I had a similar proble with I first started swimming again and found what Ernesto said very useful. But my problem became 'how' to slow down and stay slow throughout the swim. I researched several tips but the one that worked for me was to 'reach and glide' with the leading arm - I think it came from TI. Mark.

Here I will make it easier and update entire list...

Ok, so far in the challenge we have:

- Ernesto

- Jackie

- Chris

- James

- Elizabeth K

- Joe D

- Todd TX

Repost with your name on it if you're in.

I'm in, although I plan to keep one rest day a week so probably don't have a shot at winning the coveted tin foil medal. Is it against the rules to hope for bad weather up north to give me an unfair advantage? Not that I would ever do such a thing, just saying...

LOL Chris!  I do agree we do have a bit of an unfair advantage weatherwise compared to you and the other members up north!  However, it gets somewhat balanced when you consider that unfortunately, it is not as easy for me to just go and train outside anywhere due to security challenges.  When doing long bike rides/runs, we have to get a backup car to follow us in order to avoid any potential issues.  Additionally, drivers here are way less tolerant of runners and cyclist, so it all helps to spice up the workouts!

Just finiding the time to do'em Gabe. Other than that Texas has a winter that is not that severe (only one or two weeks of ice a year). If I had a normal 40hr/week job I think my training log would be nothing but pink squares. Also, the availability of trails is great, an abundance of unused railroad tracks that have been paved over that are safe with almost no crossroads. When it comes to the bike, Texas roads are not friendly, neither are the motorists. I guess hating cyclists is a redneck thing...

To those of you doubting getting in on the challenge, doing thirty minutes a day is easy, and the good thing is that you don't have to go hard. An easy spin on the bike for half an hour feels like no work at all so use those (or an easy swim) on the days when you feel tired or you are recovering from a long/hard workout.

The key is frequency and consistency. The other good thing is that we are ALL leveled for the challenge. New triathletes, experienced, fast, slow, young or old(er) will not make a difference because it is about putting one workout in a day for the 31 days of the month of January, at least 30' in duration.

elizabethk - 2011-12-27 9:13 AM I have a question.  I'm going to start training for my first HIM mid January.  Does anyone have a training plan they'd recommend?  The BT one doesnt work for me because of the scheduling. I need a plan where I s/b/r on the same days every week and it doesnt change from week to week.  Does that make sense?

Scott and I are using Essential Week by Week Training Guide for ours.  It is written by Matt Fitzgerald.  He has used it for his Ironman races in the past.  It also has different training plans for each race length.  We are doing a HIM in August.

Ernesto et all.

I am currently trainng 6x week, with one day as my recovery/rest day. Seems to work so far, and I have avoided any injuries or anything other than the aches and pain that come with a good workout. Also, and this is what I think I need the most, since my workouts are at 5:30 am, it gives me one day a week that I can sleep "late" (or as late as my 1 yr old allows).

Do you think that skipping on my rest day might bring injury/burn-out issues? I am in for the challenge, whathever plan I decide to follow, but definitely do not want to risk anything that might hinder my long term plan, or my race in February. Being new to training, and being 43, I want to make sure I avoid any issues.

Samy

Gabe, I wondered how you pull off your long bikes/runs there. I think you should get an extra point for every ride you take without getting run over.

My biggest challenge is the swim. I am only willing to swim in Lake Huron June, July and August, and that is wearing a wet suit (my kids will start at Easter if the air temp. is over 60 F). The closest pool is 35 minutes away at a nearby high school ( I don't live in the district, so technically I'm not supposed to use it, but I know the swim coach from when my kids were in the youth program, so he lets me swim). The issue with that is that it is open to the public between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM Mondays and Fridays, if school is in session.

As for bike I just spin in my basement all winter. I don't mind running in the snow as long as the temp is over 10F.

As for the challenge I am looking forward to it.  The last several months have been tough with training with my son's head injury and other family obligations as well as Scott's training.  It was easier to blame a missed workout on life than to just find the time.  Moving to altitude and cold weather didn't help.  I can't wait to get back in and push myself.

Today I went for a swim... sort of.  I am on lesson 2 of TI and I went through the drills.  Spent 45 minutes working on them and then later tonight Scott and I will get on the trainer.  Title of our workout is Mental Toughness.  This is the first time I will be doing something other than aero base building and recovery workouts (other than the threshold test).

Also, will skiing act as a workout in Jan?

Hi Ernesto,

Sorry for the late reply, Can I still join?

This years goals includes a half iron around July, and perhaps a full at the end of the year.

This year I've started to work on my bachelor’s degree. Last year I learn that I don’t have the time to do the necessary training to do a full ironman, I did an Olympic with catastrophic results, so I going to be more constant even if it means 30 min training sessions and get some serious miles on the bike.

So what do you say, am I in or what?

If so, count me in for the January challange

Only if lying on the beach soaking the rays counts! And I say that green with envy...used to ski every year since I remember, have not done it in 4-5 years (surprisingly, snow skiing in FL is not that good). I need a (powder) fix!
