Dang Jo! Glad you made it through safely, and got some tough condition practice in to boot. Enjoy the brew and rest up for the weekend.

jogo - 2012-07-03 1:48 PM Car packed for my 1st training tri (before the real thing on Sunday).  Its pouring, thundering, and 100% humidity.  Supposed to clear up and then warm up to 104 degrees by the time I make it out to my favorite swimming hole.  Here is to the 1st OWS in 3 years!!  Here is to seeing if my wetsuit still zips (and for those who like it, the zoot decor is right where a tramp stamp would be and is quite a conversation piece that I am never selling!).  Here is to trying out the new tri-suit before race day!  Here is to surviving and not getting struck down by lightning (which could happen because I said H*LL would have to freeze over before I did another tri and it sure is NOT frozen, it is full blown, the-devil-is-my-pace-booty HOT out there!)!

Holy H*LL in a Handbag!!  In the middle of a deserted lake (with my newbie friend) and torrential downpour, complete with tons of lightning and scary booming thunder.  Not a soul around.  Thank God we had our wetsuits on (virtually impossible to drown).  Could not put head in water to swim because could not breathe when I tried.  The rain was pouring so hard it was hard to get any breath.   We finally made it out, kissed the ground, and the trail we walked out to get to secret lake was flooded.  We had to wade through mud to get back.

Managed to clear up as we got out so we still got 14 hilly miles in on the bike and then bailed on the run because the storms started just as we racked our bikes.  So happy to be home, eating a chicken schwarma sandwich and drinking ar really good Founder's KBS stout ale.

We didn't die, so all is good.  Bring on the tri!!  (I may have panicked a little when we were holding each other up because we couldn't see each other with all the rain.  Bad news, my cell phone was with my towel in a dry bag and got soaked. So much for a waterproof bag in weather like that.  It is sitting in rice, hoping that it comes back to life.

Glad you're back safely. Lightening is no joking matter, please don't do that again !

Trust me it was not intentional.  Frickin' scary!!!    No where to go but back to shore. We were about 500 yds out.  I usually proclaim that I am a fair weather trainer.  This seals that!!!

Wow, it's the only conditions that Coach Johnny won't make us train in, thunder and lightning!  Anything else goes!

Well done for surviving - very dangerous.  Here it's sunny but man it's cold!  I miss my OWS!

Goodness gracious me - Mr Myotherapist is a mean man.  Ouch ouch ouch, elbows into calf muscles and shins most unpleasant.  I'm gonna have me some big bruises.

Looking forward to maiden voyage on my trek tonight though only on the trainer and only 30mins with a 15min run after.  According to Mr Fink it's transition day today, which basically means how quick can you get from the bike to the run - woohoo watch me go!

it is nice to be back in a training plan not just willy nilly.

Good morning Manatees! I have a great story to share about my son.

Over the weekend I bought him a pair of bike shoes.  He's been using my old pedals that have a platform on one side and clips on the other and has been asking for bike shoes. After we got the bike shoes I suggested he go to the nearby elementary school to practice clipping/unclipping in the safety of a parking lot. Well sunday he went out in front of the house and tried it a few times then came back in.  Maybe it's a guy thing, I don't know, but yesterday he decided to go out for a full blown ride with the new shoes, without much practice.  He came home a while later with a bloody knee and several scrapes and explained that he'd started on the pavement where he fell twice (both were the typical slo-mo tip), then he went offroad (he has a hybrid) where he fell a couple more times.  But each time he got back on and kept going! I am so proud of him!

This is me n my son after my first tri...

Good for him! Very cute picture, too.

ebshot - 2012-07-03 11:27 AM I went for a 2 mile run today.  It was hot and humid and I totally melted and was slow as slow can be.  But I felt good and so happy I got it done.  Who cares what my pace was, I was out there.

Exactly. I am hoping to get out there tomorrow sometime. Our high should be 102+, but I bought arm coolers and a Halo headband in San Antonio, so I am prepared! :-)

Forecast for here for the next two weeks.  Praying it's correct!

What is that bright orb at the top of your graphic?  I didn't think you got the bright orb in Canuckistan ?

This is why it is news!  Right now, it is absolutely pouring.

Damn...that means it's coming for us next. It's actually really nice this morning here.

And we're looking forward to some rain storms...

Yes, I supposed I should count my blessings.

You poor Northwest people. I talked to my mom while I was in San Antonio. She asked me how the weather was, and I said, "Not bad at all. It's only in the 90s." She yelled back "ONLY!!!!???? It's not even 62 here, and I have to have a fire in the stove to keep the house warm." lol She said their weather reporter promised it would warm up after the 4th of July.

That's hardcore.

(If you haven't done it already, take the phone apart -- battery out, etc. Our phones were drowned at the Waterpark on the first ride. We took them apart, put them between towels in the sun, and today, they are both fine. -- We left them apart all night at the hotel, too.)

Hi all,  got some bike questions 4 weeks out.

1. When should I have my last tune up before my HIM done?

For me, the last zone 2 ride is about two weeks beforehand with a zone 1/zone 2 ride the week before and pretty much easy stuff the week of.  That is not to say that I never get on the bike that last week though.

For example, your race is the 29th.  I'd probably have my last longish zone 2 ride on the 14th or 15th.  I'm more of a cyclist than runner or swimmer so my last long ride would be 3.5 hours of zone 2.  Then on the 21st I'd have a 75-90 minute zone 1/zone 2 ride and a brick on Sunday the 22.   Then everything gets shorter and easier that last week.  That's just me though.

2. I have yet to bike the actual distance of my HIM (point to point, 59mi/94km).  Longest ride to date is 51mi/82km.  How important is it that I have done the distance?  Would my time be better spent doing more short/intense rides?

Not important.  If you are training for a 100 miler, many people top out at 80-85 miles.   59 * .85 is 51 miles.   I don't think that you need to go longer than that unless you want to as a confidence builder.

x2. Total cycling volume with occasional long rides is more important than any single long ride, none of which have to be race distance or longer. What's on the training plan?

LOL ... I think she was talking about bike tuneup, not tuneup riding or racing Janyne but that's a good answer!

I'd say 10-14 days out. Get your hands on a copy of Don Fink's Be Iron Fit and read, memorize and do his 10 Bike Preparation things or whatever they're called (oh, 10 Steps Bike Check I think). They're just the really important things to know and be able to ensure and check for yourself on your bike before a race.

Hmmmm the RD for the marathon coming up just e-mailed and asked what bib number we want (it's a small marathon

I don't really have a favorite number I guess...any ideas?

I think there are only 400 people so it can only be 1-400

If no one else has said it yet (or taken it yet, which they probably have) ...

69, DUDES!!!

C'mon. It's Dave Zabriskie's number in the TdF. And he is another small smokin' hot fast redhead.

I wouldn't expect any other response from you. Although, I thought you might appreciate my binary idea

I did. That was hot.

So I was reading up a bit on sodium and the endurance athlete, here re. hyponatremia:

"The spectrum of symptoms can range from mild to severe and can include nausea, muscle cramps, disorientation, slurred speech, confusion, and inappropriate behavior."

Okay, so in my case, how could anybody tell?!
