lisac957 - 2012-07-19 8:33 AM Do ALL bosses just suck the life out of you? Or is it just mine.
Tell me a story about a great boss. If that exists anymore.

I was a great boss to my employees!!  I did everything I could to make them feel appreciated and the reason my business was successful and never micromanaged (cuz I'd rather hid in my office and play on the computer) They flourished and worked harder than I did!

I've never had a great boss though.  Well only for about 6 months I worked under the CFO at a rehab hospital and he was awesome .. super super motivating and left me alone and let me do things the way they made sense to me as long as they got done.  He was generous and helpful.  Then he dropped dead of a massive heart attack when we all went out dancing one night.  His replacement was a typical financial micromanaging tool.

I had a boss like your great boss. But he got promoted so is now my bosses boss. I miss those days so much.

I find that it comes and goes. Right now my boss (in fact everyone I work for) is awesome, but in the recent past ... god help me it was horrible. Not just horrible on a day to day level but horrible on a "out to get you" kinda way.

It does come and go. Had this one for almost a year now.
Our personalities just clash on every minute detail, every single day. I think the biggest issue is that he is completely un-trusting of his employees. He has to know every detail every step of the way, sometimes being statused multiple times a day. Like a parent/child relationship (did you wash your hands? did you brush your teeth? let me see your teeth. what chapter are you on in your homework? let me know when you're finished, etc.).

The strange part is that even though he's a manager, he has a lot of responsibilities on his own plate that are getting dropped because he has no time to do them. Gee, I wonder how he could free up some of his time?! Yell

Not to say TANers are NOT good bosses.  But I'm sure EVERY boss thinks they are a good boss.

I know that I could be better.  I'm poor at saying "thank you" for doing your job and MBWA (what we called Management By Walking Around).

You know, table touching and checking in with everyone.  I just expect everyone to do their job and leave them to it.  But also don't give praise for just doing it.

I can live without praise to a large extent for me it's nothing is ever right because it wasn't exacly the way she would have done it.  Even when it is right she makes something new up that I didn't do that I should start doing.  It gets really old.

One of the BIGGEST things in life I had to learn, is that people do things different ways, and if it works in the end?  Let them do it their way.

It's that way with engineering, and in marriage.

I STILL cringe when she stacks the dishwasher all disorganized and I swear they won't get as clean, BUT, I have rarely seen a dirty dish come out.  And if it does?  Just rerun it.  Running the washer twice is easier than lecturing/arguing on how to stack a dishwasher, I have found.

I still want to read the book Talk less, do the dishes, and have more sex. It basically talks about what you just said and it makes such perfect sense but it's not a natural thing to do. Good job man

Yeah I know what you mean. I have had those bosses and the one thing that I can say is over time (obviously this does not help you today) they get bogged down and ultimately fail and move on. Unfortunately you are stuck dealing with the day to day crap. I am a huge trusting person...until you cross me so if I was your boss (which would never happen because I am sure you are way smarter than me) I would just expect you to do your work and a good level until you prove me wrong...seems simple huh?

I am a great boss, let go ask my guys to tell me a story about how great I am...

I also think I am a good, fair, consistant boss, who really wants the best for my employees whether it is here or somewhere else.

BUT I also thought a lot of my guy friends would never sleep with me if I came onto them or ask them to, BOY I was wrong on that one.  They all said sure when I asked.

I wouldn't sleep with you...

(waiting for you to come onto me now)

You've seen me map HI.

Know what I found with clients like that?  If you are proactive and send them a short email (before they ask) just saying eveything is ok and moving along, they are better.

Most just want to know things are ok and get the warm fuzzies and not the details (even if that's what they ask for)...

I can stop half my annoying phone calls if I send a quick email saying everything is good or leave a quick phone message.

It was so nice to have someone trust me to get my job done.  He would say .. as long as as everything balances out at the end of the month and the financials look picture perfect I don't care how you get them there or what logic or method you use to get them there, it's your call throughout the month how you manage the work.. just have them done for the monthly meeting!

And you know what .. I worked harder and smarter and took more pride in my work because of it.  Because it was all on me.  I wanted to do a good job for him and show him that his trust in me was appreciated.  I modeled my boss like behavior after him when I owned my own company!

I could just imagine that conversation: "I don't care how you get them into the VIP room, or how you use that chrome pole.  Just dance the way you see fit, and at the end of the day, if my cut is good, then life is good". Cool

Ahem .. I owned a real estate appraisal and consulting firm.  We did not have a pole in the conference room!

Where you keep your pole is entirely your business.

What I find aggrivating, is when they "improve" something, only to make it harder...

Case in point.  The new microsoft work/excell does not have the "print" button on top any more.  You have to go to file, then hit print tab, THEN hit the print button....

Before?  The print button was just top left.  One click compared to 3...  WHY?????

I ended up having to customize the menus to bring that back...  I don't get it.
