Here's the best writeup I've seen about the fencing controversy:

http://blog.chron.com/olympics/2012/07/fencing-controversy-forces-korean-to-sit-on-piste-for-ages-eventually-costs-her-medal/

What!?! Are you denouncing my chicken-scratch write-up!?!

It was an outstanding summary but incorrect on two points. And I think it only contained one point. Tongue out

bcraht - 2012-08-02 12:47 AM Badminton--Four teams DQ'd for throwing matches!  Unreal.

This is what I wrote about it in the Olympics thread:

The four pairs have been expelled from these Olympic Games.

I watched one of the games in question (Indonesia v S. Korea) and it was pretty bad.

This is the first Olympics that has used the round-robin rather than knockout tournament play to determine advancement and draws. This has created situations where it's more favorable to lose than to win (for oneself and/or one's country) as well as matches in which it's predetermined that one or both sides are going to advance regardless of the outcome.

It's a shame. This unfortunate outcome of the format, and the lousy play, and these women getting expelled from the Games.

I don't know about China or South Korea, nor do I have privileged information about the specific Indonesian pair and this instance. But I can tell you, from personal knowledge of the way official sport works in Indonesia and other controversies, that I am pretty sure the Indonesian women did EXACTLY as they were TOLD to do, and would have had very little effective choice about it.

Oh, I am sure that point is true.  It's just such a shame for everyone, the Olympics and the sport.

"In addition, if a player has at any time behaved in a manner severely damaging to the reputation of the sport, that player may be deemed by virtue of such behaviour to have engaged in conduct contrary to the integrity of the game of Badminton."

Yanti...is this why you still aren't playing?

Busted!!!

You'd think badminton players would be all English and stiff and stuff (Allen? Froggy?), but there may have been some questionable post-tournament wild hot tub party activities.

Well, the 15 year old timer source is here: http://english.chosun.com/site/data/html_dir/2012/08/01/2012080101451.html

and, what was my other point? Her sitting out there waiting on the decision? "Shin refused to accept the decision, and when the Korean team appealed, Shin had to remain on the piste in tears, as leaving would mean she had accepted it. After about an hour's deliberation, the decision was upheld. Shin, who had to play for bronze medal just a few minutes after she was escorted off the piste by FIE officials, was not in form, and lost to China's Sun Yujie 11-15. "

So I guess it was an hour, not 45 minutes?

Oooh but I gotcha, it was to send her to the final, not for a medal.

So I guess it was an hour, not 45 minutes?

Three problems with timing (timekeeper, timing system stuck, referee inexplicably added a second to the clock)

Shin wasn't denied the gold; she was denied the opportunity to play for the gold.

The difference between one second and zero is infinity, but between one hour and 45 minutes, negligible.

I'll go ahead and say slightly NSFW (which you know is bad if I'M saying it) although I just had a huddle of female coworkers around my desk from showing this. Guys...be warned.

Anyone think that's some fantastic placing of the scoring?

I just think its fantastic.  Apparently nekkid athletics is sweeping the globe!

oh nice crampy spasm right inner thigh, perfect!

I ran at lunchtime, not fast but my initial thought of doing 4km soon increased to 6.25km coz I was having a ball out there.  Sun is shining, it's cold but beautiful, could feel the tan starting.  I loved it!  Lots of like minded people out and about which makes it fun too.

Just got to get my mind into the idea of the drainer tonight!  Just 45mins while Artemis does her homework.  More spellings!  No poem this week.

Good news re my lovely daughter - Teacher asked to speak to my husband after school, dread as expected!  But no - have faith.  She has been selected, the only one in her class, to go on a course, it's four mornings in September - for advanced and gifted children!  I AM SO PROUD!!!!!

Awesome stuff, all but the cramp!

Salty, I keep forgetting to tell you about this amazing chick I swam with way back when ... she was coming up as I was going out, but man, she was HOT and she was FAST. Now she's an MP (Member of Parliament), a TV sports announcer, and is doing swimming announcing and analysis for the Olympics broadcasts in Asia. She's just one of those whole-package and way over then some people.

Joscelin Yeo of Singapore:

Drat. Can't find any full body pics of her in a swimsuit.

Wow, she does it all!!! I was actually going to post in the Olympics crush thread but realized everything I had were american girls(mostly white) and I just didn't feel that was fully representative of my values Wink

Singapore you say??? My work might be sending me there in a few months. Double crossing my fingers now.

By the way, my friend declined the job in Thailand so my potential visit is delayed. You have more time to prep for hurricane-Salty.
