What's everyone doing training-wise today?

I'm waiting for the sun to come up to go out and run in the cold.  Tonight will be lifting.

I'm just waiting for the days to start getting appreciably longer.

Gah!!!! So much going on in here.

On insulin response and the GI values of food and what not.  Remember that all these values were assigned on fasted subjects and when eating that food alone.  Who eats like that?  Eating proteins and fats with your carb source usually blunts the response.  So it's a good tool, but the research isn't wholly applicalble to real life.

Kelly did a good job of explaining A, B, and C races.  To me A races are your big races obviously.  B races fall at the end of training blocks and you're trying to apply what you've gained/learned from that previous block in that race.  Hopefully Galveston will have me at a higher level of fitness than I was at the end of last season at Oilman and I can race it smartly in preparation for racing IMTX smartly.  It doesn't mean I'm not going to do my best and empty the tank, but racing more strictly via data and not feel and applying any corrections I make to my swim stroke is paramount to a goal time.  C races are either strictly fun races or strictly races where you go out and work on a skill or two.

Kuma - 2012-12-27 8:57 PM I'm headed home to north Georgia (Hi Karen and Christy!) for the New Year tomorrow morning, so I may miss a workout or two.  I'm taking my running shoes and swimsuit, though, and l'll get back in the routine when I get back.  Y'all hold the fort for me while I'm gone, ok?

Let's note I lived in Decatur for 3 years as well while I was going to Emory Law.

Born in Decatur.  Haven't been back since I was 2 though.

Fitzgerald is very simplistic but it's a good base point to start building from and addresses some very important points such as carb uptake after training sessions.

Speed session in pool + lifting done early this morning.  It was super hard dragging my butt to the pool because it's freezing outside.  We got at least a foot of snow the other day, and we have another winter storm warning for tonight and tomorrow.  I am not a fan.  I want some summer sunshine and heat!!!!!

We're leaving for my mother's house tomorrow morning to celebrate Christmas and New Year's, so training will be spotty at best.  I plan on hitting the country roads around my childhood home.  I always love doing that!

If it helps, I did the Muncie aquabike (swim & bike only) in 2010 so I am a little familiar with the course (not the run).  The swim can get somewhat warm.  The year I did it, the water was about 78ish.  The course has been very, very hot pretty much every year ... last year was about 110 index.  I don't mind hot on the bike, but the run offers no shade from what I hear and is a bit hilly.  The bike is super, super flat and fast and if I say that, it is true.  I did this bike in about 3:07ish in 2010, although keep in mind it was an aquabike, so I could leave it out on the bike since I didn't have a run.

My challenge will be to hold back on the bike for the run and even more so, train my body to LOVE the heat.

Thanks for all the info... it is a lot to take in.   No workout today taking a few days off prior to the new training and eating plan starting on Sunday.  This is going to be a great adventure.

I still limited here to what training I can do. So just some upper body strength, and 20 mins of very little resistance spinning on the bike. That's the orders I've been given. At least I can spin the legs now.

Oh Scott, I meant to ask. And maybe Kelly and Karen can chime in in this. Going into your first ironman, IMTX. will IMTX be your first marathon? Or are you planning on a marathon prior to that. And, for Kelly and Karen (or whoever else has done an ironman distance race). Do you recommend running a stand alone marathon prior to a 140.6?
On a smaller scale, I've run one stand alone half marathon. So going into my first HIM this summer, should I be looking for a stand alone half marathon, or just train the distance?

I'm just waiting for the days to start getting appreciably longer.

45 mintes Z1 trainer ride followed up with a 6 mile run as 2 mile warmup, 1 mile tempo, 2 miles zone 2, 1 mile temp.

My legs are still toast from Sunday's big interval workout which was an epic effort.

I am only speaking for myself - since I ran several marathons before I started doing tris. If I had never done a marathon, I probably would have felt the need to do a stand alone marathon before tackling an IM, but a lot of people (people I train with) did their first marathon at an IM.

They really are two completely different animals. For me, in a stand alone marathon I was out there pushing it pretty hard, always trying to better my time. At IM, it was more about survival for me. I'm not a great runner, so my goal was to walk a little as possible, but knowing that I was going to be walking (a lot).

I don't think you need to do a stand alone marathon while training for an IM. And you probably really don't need to do 20 mile runs either.

So are you thinking of a particular 140.6 race?

Thanks Kelly and Scott for the explanation on the A,B, and C races. I have a C race on Saturday for a local charity so I wanted to make sure I didn't do anything I wasn't suppose to.

As for workout...I had a 45 min z1 run this morning. We are about to head out to ECU/Greenville and take the kids to the University book store and get some BBQ.

I am kind of with Karen on this one. I think it is an individual thing. I ran a Marathon first to know I could run it. More of a mental thing for me than anything else. I know now that I can run that distance but I also know it will be a different type of run especially the first time around.

Karen. 140.6 is no where near to be on my radar right now. I'm targeting Timberman 70.3 in August. We'll see where that takes me. I need to be injury free for a while before I consider an IM. Thanks for the input.

2nd time through.  Carbs up (especially post w/o), protien down and monitor fat.  I've been really tired mid day and I'm not even into the meat of my training.  Going to see if I can't shake it.  Also looking at natural ways to control cortisol.

I did the first part of the Timberman 70.3 course on my CT about 2-3 weeks ago ... I think my legs still hurt from those first couple hills!!!  It crushed my legs ... those hills are IMWI worthy!

It will be my first marathon.  While I've never done one I'm of the same opinion as Karen.  Running 26.2 miles fresh and running the same coming off a 112 mile ride are two different animals.  Also a stand alone mary will set you back a few weeks in recovery (especially since I don't know how to do a race other than to race it).  EN did a really good write up on it if you check out the blog over there.

Intervals at the pool after work.

We were pounded with snow so I can't wait to go boarding with my daughter this weekend. Not sure how my legs will feel doing a couple of lsr after boarding though.

Kelly - did you ever go to the brick store in Decatur square? I use to live on Ponce so I would often walk there.

There is no physical need to run a marathon before an IM (and I would not reccomend scheduling a marathon in the 6 months before your IM no matter what).  There are a couple of things at play here.  First in run training the volume of any one run doesn't matter, what is important is the cumulative volume.  I'm not a fan of having someon training for an IM run any longer than 2:30 in one run (whatever number of miles that may be).  Super long runs (including marathons) provide very little training benefit, require tons of recovery and increase the risk for injury.  This is why I don't like athletes to schedule marathons before IMs or HIMs -- there is an increased risk of injury and a long post-race recovery time that take away from getting in the training necessary for the IM or HIM.

The problem arises when an athelete feels the mental need to run a marathon before an IM.  If this is the case, the marathon should be done before training for the IM begins (e.g. a fall marathon in October of 2013 and IMLP in July of 2014).

With regard to HMs -- totally different story.  Half marathons require much less recovery time and have a much lower risk of injury.  I think there's no issue incorporating half marathons into a HIM program once you have a good level of conditioning.

Don't remember a brick store.  I was often at Java Monkey and ABC.  I also waited tables at Osteria 832 in the VA Highlands.

IM marathon and stand alone marathon are completely different (essentially you run a stand alone marathon at just below lactate threshold and an IM marathon at just below aerobic threshold).  I have no desire to run a stand alone marathon -- it hurts too much.

Doesn't mean an IM marathon can't be fast.  My marathon PR is a 4 flat at IMFL.

What kind of carbs will you add post w/o?  I'm really just curious.  I'm trying to find a way of eating that works for me, and what I'm doing isn't cutting it.  It's obvious that I am sick and have been for some time (GI issues, fatigue, weight gain, etc.), and I blame it on the way I am eating.  Maybe I'll give the book a second read, too.

Also, if you find a way of controlling cortisol naturally, then pass along the info.  I feel like an overwhelmed stress bomb all. the. time.
