Alright, I think my log is visible now. I just set it to "only visible to registered users" and I think that should make it open to anyone on BT because the next one is "only visible to friends." Could someone confirm that for me? Also, I haven't been using BT's log until just a few days ago so there's not much on there.

Speaking of logs, what does everyone use to track their workouts? I've been using the mapmyride app to track and log workouts since before I started Tri's but I'm probably going to use a Christmas Amazon Gift card to get a Garmin forerunner 310xt (another side track... Trying to decide to go with either the Garmin or a Polar RCX3... but I think I know what everyone here will say lol) and then I'm thinking of using TrainingPeaks once I do get a GPS watch.

Biggest accomplishment in 2013? I'd have to say just getting into Tri... My wife and I still laugh at the first swim workout I did. We lived on a the campus of a Bible School in Germany that was on a lake, so all my workouts were open water. I thought "that buoy is only 150m out there so I'll swim there and back for my first one." yeah.... I got half way there and almost died.... I swam back to the dock and rethought the whole Tri decission... I did that a few more times that day and came back to the house and almost puked... Now I'm hooked

that's a good question.

I use the BT logs because it's easy for everyone to see but I was thinking about using Training peaks. Much easier to view a whole month at a glance etc. I've played around with it but haven't put anything real in yet.

Thoughts? With GPS uploads, it's so easy to use multiple apps. Btw, anybody catch DCRs latest review? AUTO SYNCING APP!! http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/12/automatically-training-fitness.h...

Hi Erika,
Your comments make sense. Calgary will have a very nice route. The swim will be in a man made lake, the ride will be toward the Rocky Mountain with amazing vistas, and the run will be in a natural area. But isn't very flat. A person would think the start of the prairies is much flatter but there are some good climbs. Any of the advantage I have by being local will be outweighed by the fact I'm slow! It will be my first tri at that distance. We have 30 wks left.

Hi Nathan
I've tried polar, times, and garmin watches. Each watch is fudamentally the same, the biggest difference is how the data is presented. Garmin and polar have their own websites and timex was uploading to a hybrid of training peaks for free with a few extra features. All manufacturers make watches that create files you can upload to training peaks or the BT log.

Personally, garmin connect does almost everything I need and I really like it. However, there really can be no argument - training peaks is the Cadillac. Over a run for instance, you can highlight sections of your data and averages are calculated. This is handy for determining max hr or just good to know. Garmin connect does not do that.

So advice is good but what do I do? I use garmin everyday. I love the wireless part so by the time I get to the computer the workout is uploaded. However for races I've uploaded to training peaks to do more detailed analysis. If money were no issue, training peaks will make you very happy. I'm new to BT log so it will take me a while to get used to it, but it auto loads from garmin so I'm happy about that.

Somebody above mentioned ray maker. His web name and blog is dcrainmaker. He in depth reviews just about everything endurance related and is unbelieveable. Google it and he has screen shots.

Also, my 910xt was purchased a year ago and have not looked at polar since. Everything may have changed.

Nathan...I can see your log, so it would seem you have the right setting.

I used to log all my training (before venturing into tri land) in Training Peaks. However, once I joined Jason & Randy's mentor group last spring/summer, I started logging everything here. I find it's easy to do, I can do so from my phone if I want, and an upload from my Garmin if I so desire. I find the BT site to be really user friendly. Easy is good.

I need to get on a bike and ride for 30-45 minutes today and then I've got a 40 minute strength workout planned. I'd like to go for a spin in my new Hokas, so may throw a few miles on those as well. That said, I'm not feeling motivated AT ALL this morning.

Randee-that would be a very sweet ride....decisions....decisions.

Bike intervals done....it wasn't pretty. I was in bed by 10pm last night but felt like I had been up late partying based on how I felt during the workout. Oh well.

>I hope Mary/Chunga posts on this. Her accomplishments over the last year are phenomenal and trump any PR or result I had racing this year. So, chime in Mary.

THE END!

Randy, thank you. You are very kind and encouraging. I think your accomplishments this last year were excellent and so demonstrate your consistency. You have workouts you dread but you persevere and get them done. You set a great example for this group!

I have spent some time thinking about this, the year was so amazing. I agree with you Randy on the power of believing in what you can do. I exceeded my expectations. I remember looking at my sprint plan early on and feeling overwhelmed. The process of plugging through week after week takes you to such a different place though than you can first imagine. It is very methodical and very rewarding. The reward is the race as well as a dose of confidence that your mental barriers are simply mental and you can make them disappear through committment and hard work.

The hardest single event I did last year was the MS150. It was crazy hot and really difficult two days in a row.

I would say though that my biggest accomplishment was simpler than any individual event. It was the leap of faith required to move from inertia to a rewarding world of fitness and much better health. It included weight loss, cardiovascular and muscular improvement, new friends, diet improvements, dramatic self education and so many small goals and fun events to look forward to. It all goes back to the decision though to put myself out there and try.

So 2014 continues the ride, and a splendid ride it has been!!

6.5 mile run this morning with my group. What a beautiful way to begin a new year!

Happy New Year!

Paul and I rang in the New Year in the ER last night.  The meds they gave him post surgery weren't touching the pain.  Nothing they tried in the ER worked either.  We finally went home 4 hours later with the direction to take 4x the dose of the Oxycodone they originally prescribed.  He is only slightly better today.  Drives me nuts when I can't find a solution to a problem.  I channeled that into the pedals this morning.  Despite almost no sleep, felt pretty strong.  Weird how that works.

My coach puts my plans in Training Peaks so it is my main log.  I put minimal effort into putting them in BT.  I've thought about quitting BT logging altogether, but I do get some comments on the workouts that I like to see.

Badger game isn't doing much to raise the Shain spirits.  Come on Badgers!

30 minutes on the bike and a short 20 minute run. I'm still having issues with this stupid nagging knee pain. The low quadriceps/kneecap pain is gone (thank goodness), but I'm now dealing with back of the knee pain (high calf area). It doesn't bother me unless I'm running or kicking on my back during a swim. It almost feels like some sort of overstriding 'tweak.'

These kinds of phantom leg issues drive me bonkers. It's not painful enough for me to go to a doctor (plus, I would really hate to wipe out my HRA account on the first of the year), but I have a genetic mutation called Factor V Leiden that increases my risk of blot clots (fortunately, I am heterozygous which means my increased risk is relatively minimal since I only got the mutation from one parent). Any time I get weird leg pain I automatically think DVT even though I don't have any other DVT symptoms. My sister (who also has the mutation as well as another mutation, MTHFR, that increased her risk far more than me) had 3 DVTs 10 years ago, and she's also in the medical field, so I guess I'll got visit her so she can tell me, once again, that it's more than likely not a blood clot, to take some anti-inflammatories, and keep an eye on it.

Randy, thanks for the post on your amazing 2013 accomplishments. You didn't come across as bragging at all -- you certainly have a lot to be proud of. A 2:13 Olympic triathlon is a huge deal for anybody at any age... I'm now the guy looking in awe at the fast guys, like you, and wondering how they do it. I really like your emphasis on consistency and the "one workout at a time" approach. Since I started using a coach in December, my workouts have been extremely challenging. My goal so far has been to simply do every workout and complete every interval. Usually I'm focused on just one minute at a time. Anyway, thanks Randy and Jason, for providing a template to all of us for your success. Actually, thanks to everybody in the group, too. You guys have done some amazing things -- very impressive and inspirational. Happy New Year!

x2. Didn't sound like a brag and is very inspiring. Happy New Year to everyone. Just got home from a New Year's day 10K. According to my Garmin I missed a PR by 1 second. I'll have to wait for the official results to come out. I'm actually a little disappointed because I was shooting for 90 seconds better than I did. Conditions were a little tough and I was still fatigued from Sundays long run. No excuses though. Plenty of room for improvement.

Bike question: which actually, you guys probably can't answer cause it is a matter of preference, but anyway....

So DH and I are looking at getting me a bike. I want a road bike, fairly light but not crazy so. I'm not a bike racer, I'll train and do tris on it, but also ride to and from work and I live in VT so hills and rough roads are kind of part of the deal. We're trying to decide if we should buy a new bike or if DH will get a frame and put one together for me. He's done it before and is pretty comfortable taking apart his bike completely, has almost all the tools you need and some of the spare parts. I have a kind of heavy clunky hybrid already, so I'm really looking to moving up to a lighter, faster road bike. I can't decide which way to go. Don't want to spend a ton of money, of course, I'm not ready for a "divorce bike" yet! (joke from a friend- the really expensive bike you buy, never ride, causes friction with spouse,e tc)

Anyway, any insights?

DH knows what he is doing around bikes for the most part, but he is a bit of a scrounge and saver, so I don't know if I'll get as nice stuff if I let him build it compared to buying it. He knows bikes, though, and reads up on stuff obsessively. I don't, at least about technical stuff. On the other hand, think of all the free time I'll get while he gets to fuss! And if I go off the deep end with tris, I could always upgrade again later.

To fulfill some requests, here's a picture of my new (and first) baby.

A 2013 Fuji Roubaix 1.0 LE, with bike cage/water bottle accessories as well as my saddle bag already attached. Pedals are Forte Campus Pedals (to appease a couple people I knew who were going crazy over my lack of my experience on a bike AND with clipless pedals).

And yes, the saddle bag is slightly loose. It's tight on the side you're looking at, but the other side is proving to be a bit of a challenge right now. I'll give it what for later tonight after it has time to cool off and think about what it did earlier. :D

Nice bike, Bryan! You already look fast! Love the colors as well.

Question: Does anyone know how to get rid of the box containing links to people's profiles, logs, etc, that pops up when you click on their name or photo? I invariably hit it by accident, and then can't make it go away.

Oh, and got my first run of the new year in this afternoon. A little over 3 miles on trails. Felt a lot harder than it should have, but that's the price you pay for almost eight weeks off. Hope everyone had a great start to 2014!

Happy New Year everybody!  I just finished a nice little run along our river...a bit icy, but mostly just pretty and refreshing!  I definitely feel the effect of slothdom these past 4 months.  Jeez...hope I don't ever slack off this badly again.  Coming back is the pits!

Nathan, thanks for the tips on the Calgary course.  I figure, as we get closer, I'll train it vicariously through you!  LOL!  I'll hit as many hills as I can find here to prepare.  (Stevens was a really hilly course too, so I know I can do it.)  I didn't realize this is your first time at this distance!  It will only be my second.  You'll do great.  A half is no joke, so do take the training seriously; but, if you put in the time and you do your food and drinks intelligently, you'll rock it!  You will definitely feel a huge sense of accomplishment when you are done.  It is a big deal.  No worries on being slow...I'll be back there too!  It is actually a pretty happy group in the mid to last quarter of the pack.  Somebody's got to make those pros look good...that would be us!  LOL!

Relative to the discussion about watches and logs - I love, love, love my Garmin 910...there is virtually nothing it won't do.  I have the HR Monitor, the cadence meter for the bike and the footpod and so I get far more data than any one girl could ever use.  I love that it gives me open water and lap info for swims, and the GPS  and elevation data is awesome for the swim and bike.  It synchs into Garminconnect, BT, and Training Peaks logs.  Last year, I used a TP coach and she was able to get all sorts of info off of it. It has actually been more user friendly than I expected and when I had an issue, the tech support was great...he talked me through an update that I did at home and now it is perfect.  Nice.  I've not used the other watches, so I can't compare them...it is just tough to imagine anything being better suited for multi sports than this.  Oh, and it has a setting for your races...one button push between events and it will switch you to the screens you set up for each sport and will give you the times for each event AND transition times!  I like that. (Admittedly, in the longer races, I get too goofy to remember to hit the button sometimes...) I don't think tech support can help with that.

The various logs...hmmm...any of them work.  I think TP is great if you are using their coaches, but I found the data organization and view on garminconnect to be the best for me personally...so we used both.  Now, I'm using the BT log for the first time too...we'll see how that goes.  Garmin has recently added some free training programs that you can dump into the calendar view, which is nice.  It does not go up to the higher distance tris though...maybe they'll add those in later.  I plugged in the oly distance and it is nice.  One of the things I liked about TP was that your workouts were there for the week, they were easy to move to different days when needed, and you got a nice summary of data for each week/month whatever.  The mobile app worked great too.  The free TP program doesn't have all of those niceties though.  Garmin does; but I've not found a similar mobile app.  BT...seems good so far...adequate anyway.  Honestly, the best if you want to dump a training program into it, change it on the fly, get lots of data and graphs and charts, and see it in an easy way on your phone is the TP log...but you have to pay for the better version.  (And, I hate paying for stuff like that when I could be buying a new pair of shoes or something...)

So, that's what I know,...take it for what it is worth, given that I'm a relative newbie.

Hope you all had a great New Years!  I'm off to cook dinner and relax a bit before heading back to work tomorrow.

Oh, and I hope the person who had to go to the ER is feeling better...I've only peripherially monitored that, but it sounds like quite the ordeal.  Sending good thoughts your way!!!!!

Erika

Hey Nancy, I have Factor V Leiden too!  I don't think there are many of us out there. How funny!  I take a small aspirin each day, and just don't think much about it.  I know if you have two parents with it, you have to do more than aspirin.  I'd never heard of it until two years ago when my Dad had a bypass and it "woke up."  It is a wierd deal.  My sister and I both apparently have it, but the doc said just take the small aspirin (81mg?) each day as a profilactic measure and all should be fine.  You might visit with your doc about it...maybe it would be enough to give you piece of mind about it all.

Anyway, hope your leg pain improves!

I am not looking forward to the next couple days of running. Tomorrow we are supposed to have a high of 3F, with snow- a couple inches and then Friday is high of -3F. I'm going to have to run on the treadmill- it's just not safe to run on the roads when they are plowing, and that is too frickin' cold for me! I did get out today though, for a short run, finishing off my Holiday Streak at 39 days!! I'm going to keep going even if it has to be on a treadmill.

On the upside, I am going to meet a swim coach on Friday to start working with her on my swimming. That was one of the birthday presents I got for myself on Tuesday!

Awesome way to finish the streak Nancy. I hate how I started that challenge and wasn't able to finish it myself. Excellent work though, that's great that you were able to make it through 39 days!

Nancy,

I think a lot of this depends on how much you want/have to spend on a bike. Time would be another factor in determining the best route to go in your situation. First off you want a bike that fits and has good components. If you don't love your bike then you aren't going to ride it. It is my opinion that your bike needs to make you feel strong, fast and it needs to be sexy. Your bike should feel like an extension of your body when you ride it.

You can find a really nice used bike from a cyclist that is looking to upgrade. My roadie is a Colnago CT-1 that was a CAT 1 racers bike. I've had her over 10+ years.. My tri bike was new when I bought her in 09. There are a lot of great new and used bikes out there. It really just depends on what you want.

First off you will need to go to a bike store and be fit on a roadie. Then you can start shopping around for new and or used bikes or a frame once you know your size. You won't have a good idea of how much a bike will cost until you know your size and choice of frame materials (carbon, titanium, etc.,)  Also when you go for the bike fit try several different bike frames out and see how they feel when you ride them. You will be able to feel the difference very quickly. Then if you decide to build a bike you can look for a frame by that company and frame style/materials.

I may be selling my Cervelo P2C  tri bike in the near future. Hubby surprised me last night and said I can get a new bike.

How long would it take for you husband to build a bike? When did you want to start riding and or racing on your new bike? If it's going to take him a long time to research, gather parts and build the bike then going new (and or used) might be a better choice.

I've never heard the term "divorce" bike before. I know a lot of people who've rewarded themselves after a divorce with a new lover (bike) but never the other way around.
