I'm really good at getting up for AM masters (at 6, so I get up at 5)...but I am lousy at getting up at 5 for any other workout. It's ridiculous.

I've had a crazy week workwise - trying to catch up.

In good news, however, after I made my work deadline yesterday, I went out and got a new saddle for my tri-bike. I rode it for 15 minutes or so in the store (after I tried a couple) and now I'm going to use it for my long rides for a couple weeks to make sure it's going to work for me. I rode it for 1.5 hours this morning and it was definitely more comfortable than the stock saddle I had, so that's improvement already.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Ugh. Saddles. Hate them. I'm on my 3rd saddle (Adamo) on my tri bike. So far I can tolerate it pretty good until I hit around 45 minutes then it starts to get uncomfortable, still an improvement over saddle #2 (Cobb) for me. Couldn't sit on the saddle #1 (stock saddle) for 2 minutes. I'm due for a new saddle on the mtb. It wouldn't be so bad if saddles cost say $20-$30, but when you clunk down over $100 each time you get a new saddle it really stinks when they don't work out for you!

Any want to buy a slightly used saddle by the way? I have a Cobb V-flow sitting around wanting someone to use it. :-) I also have a large assortment of mtb seats and road bike seats. Most never used.

My husband has said that swimming is the ONLY thing that I will get up early for. And it's true. I might get up for an early flight out of town, but I am complaining and really just want to go back to bed. Swimming? I'm jumping out of bed.

My tri shop has a saddle program where you buy a saddle and use it for a couple hundred miles. If it doesn't work for you, you bring it back and move on to the next one. It's kind of like checking out a library book. Then you buy the one you like.

Alright ladies and gents I'm back from New Orleans.  Amazing experience at the Level 1 coaching clinic.  Much of the info I already had a handle on but there were quite a few tips and tricks I picked up that were amazing.  Not to mention just the motivation you can take from great athletes and great coaches.  The people in this sport are really quite amazing.

I'll do my best to get caught up on posts today.

Saddles are so difficult and individual.  There are bike fitters that have programs that will measure your undercarriage and test where you put pressure while you ride your bike.  They claim to be able to recommend a few saddles to narrow it down.  IDK, never tried it.  When I switched saddles I identified what I didn't like about my current one (too hard at the nose and too wide).  Then I researched ones that claimed to address those issues.  I ended up with the Adamo Prologue.  It's better than my previous saddle, but still a bit wide on the nose.  I may try the Cobb JOF  saddle in the near future.

I guess I'm lucky with the saddle issue. I like the stock saddle on my Trek Madone. It took a little getting used to and am always glad to get off it after longer 3+ hour rides but I've never had an serious issues with it.

I have a nice selection of shorts that I wear. Some I like for longer rides and some I like for shorter faster rides.

After 200 hours in the saddle last year I'd say the biggest discomfort for me are my wrists. I haven't put aero bars on my road bike yet and had some pretty serious cyclists palsy in my right hand until I adjusted my grip and posture a bit. I'm planning to add some clip on aeros and get a proper fitting before spring and hoping that will add to my comfort and speed so I can hit my cycling goals.

The one saddle I got fitted for (for my cx bike) was sized by my sit bones and was the recommended seat style given to me by the bike guy for my riding and it is wonderful, love it (hated buying it, kaching!!).

Triathlon saddles are another story. No one around here has a selection to try out and my road saddle (currently on my cx bike) does NOT work for the aero tri position very well. I have very wide sit bones, and finding a triathlon saddle that works has proven quite difficult. Oh the joys of being a woman with the bone structure that is "capable of giving birth to a line backer" - as said to me by the OBGYN.

I got the Cobb JOF. I told them what my problems with the stock saddle were (pressure points) and they pulled out 3 for me to try. The other two were too wide at the front for me, the JOF (since it's shorter) worked for that.

I think trisports.com has a try before you buy program you might want to check out.

I have the Cobb flow v max (or v flow max). No problems but I haven't tried others. But no reason to switch.

Catching up! It's been a crazy couple weeks between work & training. Last weekend was a big weekend for me.....volunteered for the HITS half and full distance in Naples on Sat. and then did my sprint (3rd Tri for me) on Sunday. Ended up staying after my sprint to help with the Fun Tri for kids to an 85 yr old man doing his first tri with his son & daughter. I had 2 friends doing their first full distance Tri and what an inspiration to watch them throughout the day. I volunteered in transition, so it helped me feel comfortable for my tri on Sun. The best news is that I placed 2nd in my AG and it's the first time I've ever placed in a run or tri!! The swim was absolutely brutal with lots of choppy water and wind, but I got through it.

Biked with my Tri-group yesterday and did 57 mi and we ran this morning after doing some body mechanic drills for 1/2 hour. I love that there's so much to think about with this sport.

RE: bike seat - the bike shop where I got my fitting allows you to "test ride" seats and after trying 5 I went back to my first one. I got on one seat and didn't even make out to the end of my driveway!

Thanks for all the trainer info.....I'm going to keep my eyes open on Craig's List. The weather here in Florida is wonderful this time of year, but the days are just too darn short. Do any of you do spin class? I just joined a gym that offers some great classes and was thinking of supplementing a spin class. Comments are definitely appreciated.

Cheers, Brenda

Yes, they do, and I had checked them out. $50 to demo 1 seat, but would get $20 store credit for a purchase (but this is limited to only 2 demos). If I go through 3 seats before finding the right one that really adds up. So what I have been doing is buying practically new seats for much less than retail and trying them out. I can sell them for the exact price I paid for them this way. Figured it was the lower cost option, and I can try them longer than just 7 days. Some weeks I can't get on my bike. I'm just not doing so well on remembering to list them for sale again. But as a result of your post, I did just list one on eBay. Now I just need to get out my other seats and get them listed.

Awesome Job Brenda. Congratulations. That is very cool.

I did a spin class once, before I officially began tri training and before I bought my trainer. It was a good workout. However, we had two instructors - one of whom was just way too bubbly and the music selection was not my cup of tea - at 5am my mindset is very business like. I put my headphones on, head down, and hammer - So, after I began officially training for tris - going by HR etc,, the spin class did not really fit into overall training.

Brenda, GREAT JOB at your triathlon! I have not swam in choppy water before, but it can really freak people out and make the swim pretty dang tuff I have heard.

Question -

One morning a week I swim and then have a bit of time before going to a cycle class. I could fit a 3 mile run in there if I drug myself out of the hot tub. Would it be beneficial? Or better to rest and go into the cycle class with energy and strength? (Swim workout and cycle classes are set times.) I could do another mile on the treadmill afterwards some weeks to work on the bike-to-run transition.

What would the purpose be in doing all three workouts and how does it fit in your overall training plan? If you are going into your class tired, I wouldn't do it because you won't get as much out of your ride otherwise. How many miles and how often are you running? If you want to incorporate a relatively brief run into your training, i would suggest doing it after the bike and keep it seperate from the swim. I don't think I have done all three disciplines in one day. Perhaps you could spend the extra time stretching or doing some core exercises.

The start of the race I had the jitters. I was watching the other age groups start as they seeded the swim with over 1000 participants.
