Hey .... I play guitar in a pop/rock cover band in Phoenix... 3rd Bay Band... my wife is our lead singer... Swimming is my thing, it comes very easy to me... It's the running that is harder... I can work up to longer distances but I am a turtle.... (both are probably a weight thing... fat floats!) I haven't done any real biking in 20+ years ... so we'll see how that goes. I'm planning on purchasing a second hand bike this weekend, I have my eye on a Trek E7 and Cervelo P2k .... any suggestions welcome!

Hi Mike

Welcome to our group, congrats in your interest in Tri'ing . You got the swim down thats good its hard for most including me. Good bike brands around normally are all good Just make sure its the right size for you and get a professional Fit ask the vets in town which one is the best. Aspirants can prepare racing like Elites.
Good luck

Cheers

Carlo

Hi Mike! I love the 'fat floats'
George - thanks for the advice, the pain is still bothering me but I haven't really needed painkillers, so on the mend.

I went for my swim yesterday and was fine, got a bit of a headache towards the end but nothing major. Today I walked on the treadmill for an hour and my turbo trainer arrived (!!!), so done an hour on it, just spinning, no real structure to it.

how do you record the distance on the turbo? I can't set up my speedometer/distance on the back wheel.

Fantastic!!!!

You're going to be wondering what too you so long pretty soon! FWIW, the heavier athletes I see finishing triathlons amaze me. Keep us posted on your progress!

@Donna

Nice to hear from you again, any upcoming sprints?

@ Tay

May i know what do you use to monitor your mileage outdoor on the bike? i am sure there is something for your turbo to get your cadence and mileage.

I either use my garmin watch (forerunner 110) or a wee speedometer 'thingy', it only measures the distance, time and speed, the sensor is attached to the front wheel, I guess I could put it on the back but it wouldnt be practical to keep switching (the 'reader' bracket is attached to the fork with cable ties).

Tay

looks like not too many options been looking at the Garmin website the FR110 does not pair with a cadence sensor unless you acquire a Different unit plus a cadence/speed sensor (GSC10). If your ok with the WEE any chance it can be permanently be at the rear wheel? looks like its the best cost effective means.

Garmin is really good at it in limiting functions to gain sales of their newer products.

Cheers

Strava was my go to iPhone app before I got my garmin. It did everything from recording speed, elevation gain, and heart rate to even giving you power estimates based on your ride. Plus I could post my rides online and compare with other cyclists on strava's online page.

Greg - Everyone has a bad workout day from time to time. Sometimes it is your body saying it needs a break. Sometimes we push through but sometimes the best option is to take a rest day. Training isn't just Swim, Bike, Run it is also Nutrition and Rest.

For myself, I take Sundays off which is not exactly true because sometimes I'll use it as a "catch-up" day if I miss some workout and every 4th week is a slower week.

MikeS - Welcome to the group. 36:30 for just over 5K is pretty decent for a 1st run. For your bikes - I'd go for a ride on each of them and see which one feels better to you. Of course it may not be easy to set it up for you to try. Also with used bikes have a good look to see how well cared for they are, how banged up or how well worn they are. Look at the front and rear rings to see if the teeth are ground down or fairly good shape. All of this is not easy, especially for a beginner. You could go to a Bike Shop and look at some new ones to get an idea of what they should look like. In the end it is all a bit of guess work so good luck.

Tay - You don't need a fancy bike computer. If you don't want to buy a new one and you can't remount the one you have then could you ride by time and guess your distance based on your previous outdoor rides? Then later for your birthday or Christmas your husband can buy you one (that's how I get a lot of my gear-especially the expensive clothing).

Just an easy swim today and tomorrow a 90 minute cycling session plus I want to do a short run after the cycling. Then I have the weekend off.

On February 9th there is an indoor Sprint here. But it is a different format. It's based on how far you can get in the time allowed so the swim is as many laps as possible in 15 minutes; then cycling a 30 minute TT and finishing with a 20 minute run. It's very casual, should be worth a few laughs but I'm not sure I feel like doing it. Any thoughts pro or con?

I think I'll probably do that George (estimate the distance until someone buys me fancier gear ), I think I'll use the average speed for the last ride which will make me push a bit more outside.

I would enter this different tri, it would be a good way for you to check your progress, have something to look forward to without the pressure of being a 'proper' race, I can't really see any cons.

My rest day is usually Sunday, but I've been feeling a tad under the weather the past couple days. Gonna make a go of it today and run, but we'll see how it goes. My cat keeps me up allllll friggen night and I've been sleeping terribly.

Tay - I'm with George, just guess the distance based on average speed of an outdoor ride. Depending on the trainer, the same level of effort doesn't equal what you would do on the road anyway. I know on mine, 14 mph on the trainer equates to roughly 18 mph outside though its really flat where I live.

George - I would do the tri if I was doing it with friends as a social event. Go with your gut on it.

This turned into a rest *week* for me.  Going into it that wasn't the intention, but that's how it turned out.  I got swamped at work with some stuff that just popped up, which is not bad, I prefer being busy at work to the alternative, but it did lead to a lot of missed workouts.  Hopefully I can make up for it this weekend and going into next week.  I was about due for a rest week anyways.

@George
Go for the indoor sprint must be fun,kill them in the water!!

@Joe
You have plenty of time to get your training going for Vineman 70.3, you probably have 2 weeks of warm up before base training again which you already have.

@ Kyle
Social interaction is cool man, it's good to get your mind off training for a while, starts fresh again

@Gregg
I'm in the same boat as you are nothing makes me more sluggish than a cold weather I have to drag my @$$ on the trainer last night have not done for a long time, for me it's an opportunity for mental training

Thanks man, yeah I'm not too worried.  I've learned the last couple years to account for at least a couple weeks of recovery/down time due to work and family stuff.  So I've still got plenty of time to build up the mileage before my program for the race starts, even with this down week.

The swim is ALWAYS a cause for concern when it comes to competing in a triathlon. This is the event for which you need to concentrate on RELAXING.
