Alternating Brick:
Ride 15:00
Run 5:00
Ride 10:00
Run 10:00
Ride 5:00
Run 15:00
Cool Down 4:00

Total 1:04:00, 7.86mi bike, 3.7mi run

One of the things that limited me last season was difficulty and cramping early in the run. I attribute this mainly to an overall lack of bike fitness, but also to inexperience transitioning from bike to run. I'm planning to incorporate an alternating brick workout like this every few weeks this year.

Hey everyone,
While this isn't my first tri season, it is my first season trying to follow a focused and consistent training plan for multiple races (hence why I joined this group!). I've never really planned out a whole season of training so I'm hoping for a little feedback. I'm planning on five races this season:

Sprint on 5/17
Sprint on 6/28
Oly on 7/12
Sprint on 8/15
HIM on 9/6

Based on this race schedule my training plan is as follows:

Now - 4/3 - Base
4/4 - 6/27 - Build
Sprint races on 5/17 & 6/28
6/29 - 7/11 - Taper for Oly
7/12 - Oly race
7/13 - 7/17 - Recovery
7/18 - 8/21 - Build
Sprint race 8/15
8/22 - 9/5 Taper for HIM
9/6 - HIM
9/7 - 9/13 - Recovery
After 9/13 I'll just be focusing on a couple late-season running races.

I'm treating all the sprints as training sessions to work on transitions, etc. The Oly will be a good checkpoint to gauge my fitness 8 weeks out from my first HIM, at which point I can start to hone in on a specific race goal.

Thoughts, feedback, suggestions? I think with a focused plan I can see some significant improvement this season!

Thanks

I think the plan looks doable, but I see some risk in the Oly taper week followed by a rest week (which means you've got two low volume weeks back to back at the time you should be packing on volume for the HIM). You may want to rethink this part of the plan. The way your plan looks to me you are looking roughly at a 20 week HIM training plan. Makes complete sense to have some racing in the mix. I like to add races right before a recovery week, but I would not necessarily recommend two rest/low volume weeks In order to fit in a race. If you are racing on the weekend, put in good volume during the week, take a rest day on a Friday, easy run/bike/swim on Saturday and then race hard on Sunday. In think about structuring your plan, you've got the outline correct in the base and build phase, what's missing is having a peak phase - call it two weeks of Max volume followed by a two week taper. As you set up your phases, you can either go with 2 or 3 weeks of increasing efforts followed by a recovery week.

big update from me!

While on vacation, I ran a 30 minute shake out on Wednesday and Friday. Ran the first half of the Goofy Challenge today in 2:24:10. Adding those here. I haven't had much time to update while doing vacation things and trying to fit in sleep, which is why I am updating three days at once.

Nice work everyone! Can't wait to get home and do some biking and swimming.

Thanks Joe. On second look I agree that I can reduce both the Oly taper and recovery. I should be able to taper for a week and fully recover within a few days of the race. So the revised plan would look like this:

Build 4/4 - 7/4
Oly Taper 7/5 - 7/11
Oly Race 7/12
Oly Recovery 7/13 - 7/15
Build 7/16 - 8/8
Peak 8/9 - 8/21
HIM Taper 8/22 - 9/5
HIM Race 9/6

90' TR Antelope +1 - solid effort, but, Mitch you beat me in terms of IF/TSS.

For those of us doing the ToS I propose that we track total TSS and average IF over on TR team section. Highest combo of TSS and Average IF wins our mutual admiration and glory. There's a way to create discussion threads for the team.

Off to exile to in Buffalo for the next 3 days.

Thanks Joe. Sure you saw that I had to dial that workout back. It's a killer. Not sure if the 30 minutes last night impacted me this morning, but trying to get my body used to day in and day out on the bike in prep of ToS. I was really hurting midway through. Thought about bagging workout midway through but knew the group would see...thanks for motivating me guys!

I'm down with a ToS challenge. I think everyone has a recent FTP test so numbers should be accurate enough. You guys on Kurt kinetics and virtual power no turning the knob only one time...LOL.

If you don't sign up you won't get the opportunity to win additional prizes or qualify for the neat little badge you get on your home page (if you finish). It is also interesting to watch all the people dropout.

One of the things that limited me last season was difficulty and cramping early in the run. I attribute this mainly to an overall lack of bike fitness, but also to inexperience transitioning from bike to run. I'm planning to incorporate an alternating brick workout like this every few weeks this year.

Did the cramping occur on sprints, or longer distance? I would check nutrition too.

Your training plan is a guide but you don’t blindly follow it. You shouldn’t know exactly what you are going to do until the day you are to do it.
