And try to find a good angry song to listen to while I suffer though it. Sirius/XM "Lithium" channel usually does the trick. A little Rage Against the Machine and Nine Inch Nails and some classic hard 70's/80's rock gets me there. |

Anyway, hope everyone had excellent holidays and the new year is off to a good start. I have pretty big news. I'm going to be racing for a real pro team this summer. Not on their trade but the development team (farm team), which is huge for me. http://www.santeuniversellemarinbikes.com (It's a quebec based team so everything is in french.) And in true BDAS form, the team is sponsored by a local craft brewery (we even have our own beer) Speaking of beer, I visited 2 breweries over the holidays, Barnstormer in Barrie and Left Field in Toronto. Both were not bad but I've definitely had better. Wife and I are heading to Costa Rica at the end of the month. I don't know what the beer is like down there but I'm certainly going to have a look around.
Cheers!
Alan!! Most excellent! Congrats!! Ah, I love the Canadians - hockey, Mentos, Tim Hortons, excellent dry humor commercials, and professional cycling teams sponsored by breweries. Nothing beats that. 1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Wow, serious catching up to do. Okay - so last week I ended up pretty good - I missed a swim but that's because the pool ended up being closed - and is still closed! Ack! Can't do anything about that but I still have to administer myself a CLP because I did not meet all of my PT workouts. What the heck?! Why is it so hard for me to get those done???? So for this week with the pool being closed I'm going to give myself a little grace and plan for 1 swim (hey! I went to the next town and knocked it out today!), 3 runs, and 3 bikes. Of course I need to do PT.... Yesterday was a rest day but Monday I got in a run (went super early to swim but pool was still closed - didn't have my shoes so I went back later for a run and lift), today I got up at 04:30 and got a run/swim brick in - I drove to the next town over to use a different pool. 3 miles on the treadmill and 1000 yds in the pool. For the month then (I'm going to count 2 lifting sessions as 1) I am 12/24 as of today. Hubby is off traveling so it's looking like trainer sessions likely here at home for the next few days - workmen are here so I have to keep them company. Tomorrow I actually have a meeting in the morning and fly right after (couldn't finish my student up last week due to weather). I'm going to continue to work on getting up early consistently so it's not so painful. I do love having it done and not having to think about it for the rest of the day. |

Last night my house was hit by a tornado and the back is....well, missing. Everyone is safe but now the rebuild process starts. I will most likely be in a rental house by the end of the week and it looks like our house will be out for 3+ months. I am staying positive through all this and considering it a blessing. I had painting I was putting off and the screen cage had to be fixed as well. The tornado kinda took care of my chores for me DQ your uncles neighborhood was safe from what I can see and have heard. You know it's bad when you walk out front to see the news crews with the state governor, the sheriff, police chief, and mayor in your yard coming to shake your hand and talk to you. Keep on keeping on folks. Stay strong with the workouts and I will try to stay updated as much as I can with limited computer access until we get in the rental. !!!! Holy cow!! I'm so glad to hear you and your family are all okay!! That is crazy!! Good luck on clean up and rebuilding - I hope there aren't any issues along the way and things get taken care of quickly! Best of luck to you! |

It was a slog which inspired the Question of the Week: How do you motivate yourself when you get really tired and want to pack it in? [/QUOTE I do what someone else mentioned and sprint to the next telephone pole or street or mailbox or whatever. Then I jog to the one after that, sprint to the next one, etc, etc. It usually perks me up and I'm much more satisfied with my workout. Like Gretchen mentioned, if you go another 10 minutes or so it usually pulls you up over that hill of sluggishness. If you're still spent, well, you just got 10 more minutes out of it which usually equates to another mile run or a little farther down to turn around on the bike or another 500 yards in the pool. All good things. I also picture myself running up my street. I know how long it is and if I'm on a treadmill for example and know I have a mile to go and it seems like forever I just picture my entire run coming up the avenue off my street - a little creative visualization if you will. |

Way easier to get yer butt off the couch if it is only 10-15-20 or whatever minutes then having to go for hours. We all have our distances/paces/thresholds that make or break us! Originally posted by aviatrix802 7/24 with a run this afternoon! It was short - 2 miles but time was decent with a 1 min walk in there but wow, I'm out of running shape.... Wanted to see how it felt on the tailbone that took a heck of an impact on an ice ridge while sledding out in Utah a week and a half ago. It still hurts - hoping it's only bruised. The good thing - I did find some non-icy pavement, right down the center of the road, so that was good! I need 1 of each now s/b/r in the next 2 days... I already get a CLP for not meeting my PT sessions.... Bad patient. You are so right, Thor! Thanks for reminding me of that. Heck, this time last year I couldn't run at all on a bum knee! |

I do the visualization trick too! Especially during races, when I'm just ready to die on that last mile, I always think, "if you were running this at home, you'd have just topped the big hill and all you have to do is run home, which is easy and you do it all the time". |

Member 3143 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open #20--3mi run this morning with the pup. It was 12F out there! Brrrr... The only part of me that was really cold is that inch of leg that shows between the tops of my socks and the bottoms of my running tights, but man was that part cold! #21--2000yds in the pool Both of these workouts sucked pretty hard. I was impossibly slow on the run and I have no idea why, except that I didn't sleep well last night. I did the swim about 45 min after the end of the run and despite hitting some of my fastest 100 splits ever, I'd swear I bonked at the end. I ate breakfast between the run and swim, so I'm not sure what was going on there. I ended up cutting the swim short when I felt like I just couldn't move my arms any more. Donating blood this afternoon, so I already know tomorrow's workouts aren't going to be great. Oh well...that's what the off season is for, right? |

Regular 866 Central Coast, CA | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open I've had a busy start of the year at work, in the home stretch of a product release. Finally had a break while it's in review and was able to catch up here. Good to see so much activity! For me I've only been able to keep up with my running 3x a week. With my first HM of the year in February (and my goal for the year is 600+ miles) I need to stay in track. Each year I've started with some physical challenge. Last year it was Plantar Fasciitus, which I beat with the help of supportive shoes and inserts while still running 3x for 10-15 miles a week. This year it's a pinched nerve in my neck which affects my right arm. Sometimes it's fine and other times it goes numb or flares up with pain. It's odd knowing that my arm is OK even though it hurts like crazy due to the signals the nerve is sending to my brain. While it doesn't pain me to swim, my physical therapist doesn't want me swimming for the time being. At my next PT appointment I'll see about what sort of workouts I can do to keep my upper body engaged. > How do you motivate yourself when you get really tired and want to pack it in? If I'm on a long run and I'm feeling worn down I let myself take small walk breaks. As much as I want to call it quits the walk breaks help me go the full distance. Some runs are good and breeze by, some runs are hard and need to be slogged through. Knowing that one hard run doesn't mean "all runs suck" and to just finish it: the next run will be better. |

What keeps me going is knowing that I've done it before....and a little musical motivation doesn't hurt either. There are the little quotes that pop into my head as well....while I don't have that whole video script memorized like DQ....some things "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.." "When you feel like quitting....think about why you started" "Push Yourself....because no one else is going to do it for you" "The harder you work....the harder it is to surrender" and when it is waning with those things...prayer "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" Philippians 4:13 |

It was a slog which inspired the Question of the Week: How do you motivate yourself when you get really tired and want to pack it in? Motivating myself, sometimes I'll just watch one of the Ironman World Championship videos, that will usually pull me out of my funk. If I am really tired, a couple of days off, and doing something else, like paddle boarding, windsurfing, something different to recharge the batteries. During the winter I mix up my training with snowshoe running, x/c skiing, so it's not usually an issue until mid summer. Doing a short course tri a 5 or 10km race also gives me a boost. |

13 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open did 1200m swim today. It was snowing so the pool was not as crowded as last time. my colleague did 1700m in the same time so there is still a lot of progress to be made. was setting up my bike on rollers yesterday but could find the damn pump to inflate the tires. I'm isolating the garage ceiling so all the stuff is moved to one side in the garage. Its an impenetrable mountain of equipment, plywood boards, workbench and garbage from the works. After 30min of looking I gave up. This morning when i left for work I noticed it was just standing next to the door.... typical. added a profile pic from the time I was president of a students bar in the basement of my college (we charged 0.7Euro for a beer !!!) |

The trail was pretty snowy, so there would have been a bit more stress than normal. But I may need to dig out some of my old PT exercises and add those for next week, and then remind myself to take it slow easing back into training. Will aim to do both a run and a trainer ride tomorrow to catch up on my goals - I don't want no CLP! |

423 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Originally posted by Qua17 How do you motivate yourself when you get really tired and want to pack it in? I just try to keep in mind the reason I'm doing whatever it is I'm doing. Ultimately we train so we can accomplish a goal, whether be to complete our first 5km or to break 10 hours at an Ironman. Every training session we do helps us get to that goal. When I'm on the bike and I'm suffering and I want to pack it in or take a break I just remind myself that that would be a small chip in my potential to complete the goal. Setbacks are natural and sometimes it is better to just pack it in (overtraining is no fun) but when we CAN do a thing, we OUGHT do a thing. If I can physically finish the run, swim, ride, interval, whatever, but the motivation is lacking, that's when I just have to batten it down and push through. That's a chip in my training potential that I have a choice over and I choose not to be the limiter to my own success. So that's what motivates me. I've never pushed through a really tough workout and regretted it. But I definitely have regretted not finishing a tough workout. |

Are Mentos Canadian? I always thought they were from the UK. lol. I'm hoping to still get some touring in the states done. I'll have team mandated races but for the most part, I'll still be doing my own thing. I'm also hoping to get to the Lake Placid area at some to do some training. |

I'll have team mandated races but for the most part, I'll still be doing my own thing. I'm also hoping to get to the Lake Placid area at some to do some training. Ah! A quick Google search showed me Mentos originated in the Netherlands. Their corporate headquarters are in Italy now and the US headquarters are in Erlanger, KY! Who'd a thunk....and frankly who cares.. hahahaha. But now I know. I think someone once erroneously told me Mentos are Canadian and the commercials kind of cemented that thought. haha Lake Placid and the Adirondacks in general is/are fantastic for hill training as you know. Lake Placid to our Lakehouse on Lake Champlain is a 45 minute drive or so with some sweet hills en route. Make the ride and there's a Heady Topper waiting for you at the end. Coming out of Placid down by the Cascade Lakes will be a sick, fast downhill then coming out of Keene toward Keene Valley you'd bang a left on 9N and take that all the way to Lake Champlain. The hill just after making that left always makes me think of the hills out west - looooong. I haven't ridden that one yet myself, need more legs. Edited by aviatrix802 2016-01-14 4:43 PM |

So....question I have......other than just memory...what things do y'all use to count laps in a pool. The pool at the gym is a 25m pool....so there is a lot of back and forth to get any amount of distance. I have a Garmin 910...but it isn't all too accurate in the swimming zone while doing lap swimming...a flaw that I had heard was a problem when i was researching it. Thanks!!! |
