Hey Candace,

I just looked at your races, is this for the California 70.3 in the end of next month? Your swim is only 1.2 miles (~2100yds). A sprint, really, to what you have been practicing for (1.5miles ). Nevertheless, I would bump up your yardage on the swim.

That just made my weekend! I did a 1 mile swim in Chicago and that wasn't bad at all!

That's a nice mistake to make!
Hope everyone is having a good training weekend!!

Just got done with a workout from that swimplan.com site that Candace posted.  It was great, and went by much faster than just hopping in and swimming laps.  Thanks for that link, Candace.  I think I'll be getting many more sessions from there.

Also, if Grace logged painting in her training log, does that mean I can add registering for wedding gifts.  Geez, I didn't realize how much stuff I either don't have, or need to replace

Who sticks to there trianing when feeling sick?
ie.. sore throuht, sore chest, sore head, caughs a little. My son had it last week (and he was nice enough to share) so I know without going to the docs it will be gone in 5- 6 days.

Last week I had to take three straight days off due to illness and fatigue. It enabled me to put in two strong workouts at the end of the week. IMHO, in the long run, it pays off to rest. Even though I lost a little bit of sharpness, I have faith I'll get it back within a couple of weeks.

When I'm sick, as in actually ill, I stick to the rest and hydration.  If I feel like I'm getting sick, or just feel a little crappy, I usually put in a hard workout.  Like I'm burning the sick out of me or something.  Usually feels good and strangely enough gives me an energy boost that kind of makes me forget the symptoms.

I always ask: "If I work out, will it make me sicker?" If the answer is Yes, stay home and rest, your body needs it. You don't want your muscles and your cold fighting for red blood cells. But if the answer is No, then go out and have a light workout and see how you feel.

I think I read somewhere the idea of above the neck vs. below the neck symptoms. If it is a head cold you can still workout. If it is flu-like, chest, achy, stomach, etc, drink some tea and go back to bed.

Hope you feel better!!!

I agree with this too. My other problem is that when I'm working out I'm not sleeping though. This week I feel like I'm starting to get sick but just a cold, but if I don't workout that's an extra couple hours of sleep that I'll get. Decisions decisions.

AWESOME!!

Was that a reverse tri, Candace?  From your race report it sounded like the events started with the run and finished with the swim.

Yeah, it was in the order Run, Bike, Swim. This was my first reverse tri and the transitions were strange. But it was a local race and it was a fun brick workout on a beautiful day. A bunch of my co workers and tri club members there.

Also, I looked closer at your races and they are all over the place (geographically). I conclude that you are either you are a gypsy or a Deadhead.

No joke.  We had a mild heatwave here in central MS last summer.  By mild I mean 100+ degrees w/ 100% humidity.  I think the worst I went out in was 104 with a 117 heat index.  You can feel the heat off the road on your legs, and the wind you create while riding makes it feel like your in a dryer.  I took my normal amount of water for a thirty mile ride.  At mile 8, half of it was gone and I turned around.

We also just dodged some tornadoes here.  One went about 2 miles north of my house, and another went 5 miles south of me (which is two miles north of my office).  Close call.

Me again,
I picked up a home weight gym this weekend from my brother-in-law,(now my home gym is complete, weights, bike trainer, treadmill, rowing machine, balance board and I paid a total of $45 for it all (took me 1.5 years to get it all but woohoo)
I was wounder if anybody does weight training and do you do a full body workout or just the upper body vs lower? What kind of workouts and how many times a week?
Nate

$45???? Seriously? Damn. I paid about that for two dumbbells and a medicine bal.
I try to do strength training, unfortunately if I need to cut a workout it's usually the first to go. My gym offers a Muscleworks class that I like- all-body workout with low-to-medium weights, high reps and cardio. Good workout in 55 minutes. They also have an abs and low back class that I LOVE. I would like to start doing lower body workouts, but right now I just do core and arms/shoulders/back. Usually about three times a week for core, and twice for everything else.

There is a good article on BT called "HardCore" that I like to use for abs when I don't make it to class. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=...

I'm with Grace on the strength training.  I do a Body Pump class twice a week, or sometimes once a week, and sometimes no times a week.  The first work out to go if I gotta cut something.  Also, I don't like the complete worn out and weak feeling when I'm trying to put in a long swim, bike, or run work out.  I do try to get two good core sessions in a week.  Maybe 15 minutes of abs and low back type stuff.

I'll also admit I don't know much about strength training.

I also ditch the strength training 1st-- for ROI reasons-- I often feel like it takes away from my next day more than it helps in the long run...

but I keep trying to fit it in at least once a week, so I guess I must see some value.

Thanks for the ab article--it inspired me to do some ab work after my run tonight. Is any one else too lazy to log stuff like that in the appropriate way though--it would take me as long as I spent doing it I feel :-)

Hmm.. maybe a Deadhead. I did go to a bunch of shows back in the early 90's. And I still listen to them and go to see the bassist, Phil Lesh, at least once a year.

Actually, I moved from New York to California in 2005 and I have a close cousin who lives in Chicago. So that is why my races are all over the place.

Bill - Nice job on the New Orleans Ironman 70.3. Looks like a great race. For some reason I would prefer Jazz Fest. And I am glad you were safe from the tornadoes. I heard about the storms on the news.

As for the weight training, I drop that first too. Wish I could include it all. I am finding out the hard way that having a strong core is really important. I think doing a lot of core work is fixing all my hip issues (go figure). I like that link, Grace, I will add those to my routine. When I log strength I add the sport and the time but not necessarily every exercise unless I am repeating the same routine over and over.
