Whoa! I wouldn't go farther than 6 miles the week before. Let your legs recover for the beatdown they are going to receive. They'll thank you. |

Veteran 128![]() ![]() Orange County, CA | Subject: RE: apw0397's group - CLOSEDHad a horrible night of sleep, but I got my workout in for the day. I ran out of time and could only fit a 375 meter swim in...my least favorite pool, too. As soon as it warms up I can hit the outdoor community pool. |

Master 1292![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() McKinney, TX | Subject: RE: apw0397's group - CLOSEDCrud. Back to the drawing board. I'd really like to fit one more half in before ths summer arrives. Technically, you could do it, but there is no real reason you should do it. You would probably feel ok for about 10 miles, but then you would start feeling it. Hard. By mile 20 it would not be fun. You want to be well rested for the marathon. You've got to taper so your body has time to adapt to the work you have done and to build up your glycogen (energy) storage for the marathon. Even during training, it's the rest and recovery days that you get stronger, faster, and fitter. This is all about fun, but we have to be sensible. Your body will break down if you try to do too much. When I did my first Half Ironman, it was on a Sunday. Feeling "ok" I decided on Thursday to go out for a 12 mile run since I was training for a marathon 2 months from then. Ended up getting a nagging injury that still bugs me today. Learned the hard way it's better to undertrain than overtrain. So take it easy, and then finish the marathon with a smile on your face! |

Member 54![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: apw0397's group - CLOSEDHope you had a good race! I've decide to stopped training for my first marathon (3/30) and reschedule it for the NYC Marathon in November instead. We got dumped with a foot of snow on Friday, so we went snowboarding/skiing instead. The knees are thanking me for that hard decision... Maybe I can find a sprint for May/June to train for instead and take it easy... |

We had a good time this weekend. Weather was perfect. Course was hillier than expected, but we managed. And we didn't even gripe at each other once! Guess I won't need that divorce lawyer after all. |

Member 212![]() ![]() Mt Pleasant, SC | Subject: RE: apw0397's group - CLOSEDAlright, last week was by far my best week training since I started this whole adventure. Wanting to continue the trend I jumped into the pool today with the greatest of intentions, only to find out that body had decided its time for one of those recovery weeks I hear so much about. This brings about the question, what exactly do you do for a recovery week? Lower the distances? Go slower? etc. I automatically did both, I was just wondering if there are any general rules of thumb. Oh, and nice job on the marathon! |

Lower the distance/time mostly. 40% off what you did the previous week, then next week go back to the same distance/time. You aren't necessarily trying to go slower, but you don't want to do any kind of speedwork. |

Veteran 128![]() ![]() Orange County, CA | Subject: RE: apw0397's group - CLOSEDHey! I got hit with a cold this weekend. Saturday I went for a run and my hr was wonky (I don't train with a hrm, but I can feel when my hr is screwy) and I couldn't catch my breath. Sunday I was just EXHAUSTED so I scrapped my long run AND took a nap (I'm not a napper...I go go go until I pass out usually). Yesterday I just felt like doo-doo. I was going to scrap today's spinning class, but I actually don't feel half bad. Did I mention that I FINALLY got clipless pedals and biking shoes? |

Do you have a trainer to practice clipping in and out? Make sure you tell us all about your first outdoor ride on them. Wear good padded shorts. You'll need them when you fall. Remember that EVERYONE falls when they are getting used to them. It's not just you. Laugh at yourself, get up, and get going. |
