jarvy01 - 2012-08-24 7:37 AM Speedy 10k vibes go out to Scott this weekend!  Open 10ks are my fave

Never done an open race over a 5k, and that was 2 years ago, so we'll see how this goes.  I'm kinda excited.  Looked at the times from last year and tops in my AG was in the low 40s.

Larkin, Scott, and Kelly - Thanks for the thoughts and feedback on the IT band pain.  This flares up everyone once in a while.  Kelly is probably right - my body is sore and fatigued right now, and I'm sure my form is compromised.  Yesterday I fought the pain during my entire run, and then around mile 8 or so, my left groin muscle started to feel funny, as if it were being strained.  I shut down the run.  I don't really want to use the tape or anything quite yet, as I think rest is really the best thing for it.  I hope you get your pain sorted out before Patriot, Scott.

Rest day today, and then one more big volume weekend of training.  Kids start school on Monday, so things will get quiet all the way around.

I am retaining 3-4 lbs. of water this week.  It's disgusting.  I can't think of why this is other than the fact that I drank sports drink during 3 of my longer training sessions this week.  Actually, I've consumed tons of fluids via kefir smoothies, green tea, water, etc.  Oh, I ate like a hog as well, but it was all good food.  It's really annoying that I'm going into this race up 7-8 lbs. from last year! Ridiculous.

I not usually pill person for for water retention I love GNC's Waterex

You know the drill -- Got out hard, jack the HR up and give it everything you have over the last mine.  You're a lot faster than you think, I think you're going to be happy with your time at the finish line.

I think I need to take all the pills in that bottle to get rid of this water.  LOL  My fingers and face are swollen right now.  Really bizarre.

This was a comment made to my slowtwitch article -- I'm not sure what to think:

Kelly Burns Gallagher may know the law (which only means she's received the secret decoder ring; they make the language obtuse for a reason), but she's an historical dunce. There is no point in professing your innocence at a Stalinist show trial. All you can do is give your judge/jury/executioner the single-finger-salute and maintain your dignity.

Presumption of guilt until proven otherwise, laughable due process, no right to face accusers (or even know their identities), quintuple jeopardy, no case standing, jurisdiction, relevance, mysterious plea agreements, last-minute magical physical evidence...

This is the textbook definition of a persecution, not a prosecution. And it's an embarrassment to 500+ years of western legal jurisprudence, civil or otherwise. All the USADA can strip away is the American love of pro cycling, which Lance is almost single-handedly responsible for. Believe me, we will gladly take our bikes and go home.

And it's beyond sad that so far only one pro triathlete had publicly stood up for Lance: Macca. I suppose the rest of you clowns know you can't compete with a 3:45 70.3, so you're just covering your own saddles. But whose to say your reputation won't be the USADA's next target?

The standard of guilt is a positive A and B sample. Period. Produce it, or go away and create a circus somewhere else.

I know I come off as anti Lance, but it's guys like that who push my buttons.  Lance's fans remind me of Barry Bonds' fans in that they just can't step back and take a rational look at the situation.

I read your article (not the same one I read on FB).  That guy - Brian - is overly emotional and angry.  He could have disagreed with you in a less personal/emotional manner.  Anyway, I wouldn't worry too much about it.  Your articles are well written and provide valuable information to the triathlon community over at ST (and here ).

Kelly - not sure what to think either. The guy seems really hostile. Whatever!

Jen - Kelly recommended GNC Waterex to me (I have horrible water retention issues) and I really like it. It's not like the water pills I used to take back in the day that left me feeling dehydrated. This one seems more mild. I've been taking it everyday for a couple weeks now and feel much better - no more extreme swings of feeling bloated for 3 days then back to normal, back to puffy ankles and fingers...normal. You do need to take 1 pill every day. Not just one here and there. I think that's why it's better, it helps keep everything more equal day to day.

I have got to get back to consistent training. I'm lacking any motivation these days. Which just irritates me because that's so not like me. Arrrrr!

Work really sucks right now, more than usual. I'm starting to look for a jobs out west. We'll see how that goes. We are all ready to be closer to family.

Here's my response (I'm working on a blog post about all the crazy Lance comments):

"Kelly Burns Gallagher may know the law (which only means she's received the secret decoder ring; they make the language obtuse for a reason), but she's an historical dunce. There is no point in professing your innocence at a Stalinist show trial. All you can do is give your judge/jury/executioner the single-finger-salute and maintain your dignity."

This is my absolute favorite and was written in response to my article on slowtwitch.com.   Let's start with "Stalinist show trial."  Stalinist show trials (also known as the Moscow trials), took place in 1936 and 1937 and were precursors to the Great Purge where hundreds of thousands of people were killed in Soviet Russia.  I get that the commenter is using hyperbole to try to compare the USADA process to the atrocities of Stalinist Russia, however the comparison is a poor one.  USADA conducts its arbitrations pursuant to the AAA rules for arbitration.  These are the same rules and processes that govern 80,000 cases each year. While Judge Sparks recognized that the allegations against Armstrong in the charging letters were ambiguous, he also determined that the procedures met due process requirements.  Just because the process is not ideal does not mean that its a "show trial."  Comparing the dispute between Armstrong (with the assistance of his very qualified, competent and incredibly high paid lawyers) and USADA over whether he doped to a totalitarian regime that killed over 3 million people does nothing to further the conversation and is trolling at its worst.

So so performance this morning in my 10k.  My garmin had 46:46 and the chip had 47:07 which was good for 33rd out of 331 overall.  I went out a wee bit too hard because come mile 4 I was done, well I slowed down to check on a guy who went down about 10 feet in front of me and couldn't get it going again really.  The fact it was SO damn hot didn't help.  I was half soaked in sweat before we started.  Overall a positive experience.  I do prefer running off the bike however.

I just keep reading and listening to comments on Lance all over the place whether it's the radio, or on FB or wherever.  The amount of emotion attached to this is a bit stunning to me.  I don't know if people can't seperate Lance the athlete and Lance the crusader against all things cancer or what?  Maybe the fact I came to endurance sports after he was already retired buffers me.  IDK.  Crazy, crazy stuff.  I did have fun on FB yesterday needling the overly emotional though.  LOL.

That is a great 10K effort and I like running off the bike so much better too. In the winter I'll do 15 minutes on the trainer before my morning runs.

I find myself detached from Lance as well. I'm pretty certain he's guilty. Shame he got this result and Clemens got off but other than that oh well.

It was really hot out there today. Put in my last long ride and went pretty hard. Felt good even at the end but the dried up salt on my skin and even eyelids was awful.

Scott (uhcoog) - NICE 10k time!!!  Congratulations!!!!

Karen - Did you take enough time off from structured training?  Maybe you need a bit longer to do whatever you want before your motivation comes back.  When is IM Tahoe?

Scott (everlong) - I had my last long ride before my HIM yesterday as well.  How are you feeling about things?  Excited for Patriot?  Training is in the bag at this point

Heading out now for my last long run, and then I need to squeeze in an OWS later today.  Legs feel pretty good this morning.  We'll see how the IT band holds up during the long run.  Enjoy the rest of your weekend, peeps!

Jen - Tahoe is over a year away. Sept. of next year.

A year is a long time.  Aren't you signed up to do a marathon?  How are you feeling about that?  Motivation will come back.  It ebbs and flows for all of us.
