Yes, I know many other sports have athletes that put in the same amount of training and such (gymnasts come to mind) -- but then I know there are many Olympic sports where people pick up something later in life and then succeed (the rowing gold medalists come to mind -- not sure which event it was?). I know those people are still amazing athletes in their own right (gotta love good genes), but watching swimming is so beautiful when you truly KNOW what is behind it. I don't know, even with the attempted legal disclaimer, this still strikes me as "Swimmers are better" than the others. Were you previously a Swimmer? Yes... I was previously a swimmer. So no, it's not so much a "swimmers are better," as it's an "I understand and totally GET what it took to get there." So the respect and admiration I have for them is deep-rooted. And I do think that some Olympic sports require more time/training/dedication than others. It ain't all apples to apples. I don't think the skeet shooters put in 4-8 hours/day since they were pre-teens. Maybe I'm wrong??
Swimmers are better. Is there really anything to argue about here? Yes. After I posted my drivel, I realized I should have just said this and then STFU. When will I learn??????????!!! Glad you are with me, dear, but then I always knew you were!!! (And yeah, the 99/100 skeet shooting is incredible. Based on the 2-3 clay pigeons I killed last year, please know that she has my utmost shooting respect!!) |

I hope your work situation turns out well for you and your family. Change is always scary. Julia, I saw the men's swimming last night--super exciting! So, I have a race this Saturday. I've had a bit of a cough for the past couple days, and last night it became evident that it's an all-out chest cold. It hurt to swallow last night and this morning I spent the first hour of my day trying to cough my lungs clear. Ugh. So, I'm going to shut down the last of my pre-race training and just rest an hydrate. Any other ideas??? Try a menthol cigarette. They seem to work. I agree with you and see where you are saturday am. This isnt a big race, and you have other events later so maybe skip it if you aren't 80%? |

skeet has one event per sex. but shooting has a lot. here this is awesome... some chinese chick won gold in the 92 skeet. she was the first female to win gold in a mixed competition. apparently the ioc sh+t themselves thinking a female could better a male. so they discontinued the sport. |

I'm a lover, not a fighter. I'll just leave well enough alone and say that, impressive as Skeet is, I still don't think she trained physically as hard as the swimmers. And yeah, Phelps is hardly the picture of the perfect Olympian. Nor is Lochte, for that matter. Nathan Adrian, on the other hand... I think I need his poster on my bedroom wall. (Truth: Rowdy Gaines and Matt Biondi posters graced my freshman dorm room.) |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have to say, I love swimming the most too and I don't know all the technical stuff behind it. Like Trevor, I think MP is a little too cocky, but then I look at what he has accomplished and think it's ok. WOW, that final gold medal was something else. Lochte is good, but MP is a legend. Love Franklin and Soni too--pure joy when they win. Awesome stuff. Doug, like everyone said, there will be other IM in your future. The #1 goal now is getting back to 100% even if that means stepping ALL the way back to get it done. Many of us in this group have had season/training altering injuries and we come back to even better seasons. You will too. Once you pull the plug in IMFL you can put it behind you and focus on your career, your health and the family. Jayne, no menthol cigs! I would give it rest, hydration and then see how you feel. If it is the last race of the season and you don't care how you do or if you get sicker post race, GO FOR IT! I'm starting to have those crazy IM dreams already. Last night, I didn't dream about Fatty or Trevor, but I did wonder why I couldn't see through my goggles as I started into the ocean for my swim (Thanks David, I think you planted that one!) and then remembered I forgot my bike, but had my JOULE in my hand! Geez, not only do I have to worry about being behind in my training hrs now I have to worry about being behind bc I haven't had any IM dreams yet? Serious note, totally normal to panic and obsess over every niggle and twinge I'm experiencing right now? First it was my elbow, now my knee. Finding the mental aspect of this IM journey is probably a lot harder than the physical. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Kyla, thanks for the Nathan Adrian pic. At least my eyes feel better!! I think I'll pass on the cigs--of any type. I grew up in a household with both parents smoking. I've had enough (2nd hand) smoke for a life time. Christina, garlic and honey? Together? I need some explanation here. Tomorrow's race is not the last of the season, but........ dayum, I want to do it. If I had to make a decision right now, I would probably have to bag it. 24 more hours. On a positive note, I'm getting to watch a lot of the Olympics. And if I had to vote on most difficult Olympic sport---gymnastics! Finally, for your entertainment: My first ride |

I think I need his poster on my bedroom wall. (Truth: Rowdy Gaines and Matt Biondi posters graced my freshman dorm room.) Not the pics, this. Guess how old Kacie is?
edit cuz I terp'd it. Edited by gotta run 2012-08-03 8:54 AM |
