Ellen, thank you so much for the donation. Look forward to seeing you at the race.

Steve, are you racing in the Nation? I know you were talking about it.

GEORGE -

One way or another, I will be there; that is, I'll either be racing or spectating. I have been signed up for several months, and will be down there anyhow with Lynn, so even if my body rebels enough so that I cannot race it, I'll be a presence there to hang out with you and Ellen. I am very much looking forward to that, to be sure!

I think i will be able to race it, but I need to fully resolve a few issues first. I know I have lots of time to do that, and am on it already, so I'm pretty confident; just a bit guarded, is all.

I will probably do an update on my schedule for you all, although I was never very clear on it right from the start. But circumstances have steered it in a certain direction, and in a while (like, within an hour or two) I'll present that here.

Yeah. There is that, and something about USAT rankings, and a race report (or two??), and I know I have to tend to the donation for you.

Onwards!

Crap.

I just lost an enormous post I was making to the group-at-large, mostly about my opast couple of months and my plans for the first half of the season. I hit "tab" instead of "caps lock", and away it went. Bloody hell.

So, I'm not going to try to re-do it, and probably all that I said is hardly worth your time to read it, anyhow. I guess it's all good then! (?)

The short of it is that I am sticking mostly close to home for my races at least until arly August. Part of this is money, and part is my discomfort (groin) in driving long(er) distances. That in turn has affected my training, wherein cycling hurts after about the 35-50 minutes mark in any ride. My volume and distances are way down, and so I'm not going to attack the early season too aggressively. Plus, it's mmaybe time to take a step back fro a season, as I have raced ferociously for the past four seasons. So, as much as I love the USAT rankings "game", that will be secondary this season.

The local race series is a study. It is run by people with hearts of gold, and when they tout themselves as presenting "events for everyone", they mean what they say. The plus to this is that everyone can play, but the negative is that things can border on chaos, and also that numbers can be diluted. The event I did this past Saturday was one of ELEVEN races that morning:
long du -- 22
short du -- 44
long tri -- 85
short tri -- 208
super-sprint tri -- 65
try-a-tri -- 169
short tri relay -- 9 teams
swim/cycle -- 10
1km run -- 64
3km run -- 61
8km run -- 86

At these "events" there is just a ton of stuff happening, and race courses can get congested. My du started early and was fine until the second lop of the bike, after which the super-sprint and try-a-tri people had gotten out of the pool and were also on the bike, and then were finishing their runs, along with the actual runners doing the straight runs, as I was finishing mine. Craziness! (But at least I was done before the masses of the sprint and long tri got on-course!!)

The other drawback is that only three splits are provided, with the bike time usually also including the transition times. this is a money-saving move, as each timing mat costs a pile, but I hate it because it doesn't give an exact time to compare myself against others as to bike speed and transition speed. Grrr!

I compensate by clicking on my watch where the missing timing mat would be were it there, and that always matches my riding time on my bike computer, which in turn accurately reflects the speed on the computer. Still, it is a nuisance and, over the years, has made me avoid most of the races that are so close to home.

But, this year it is working for me. So, here's my early-season schedule:
May 7 -- Cumberland Duathlon (long)
May 21 -- Early Bird Duathlon (short)
June 11 -- Ottawa River Triathlon (sprint)
June 26 -- Smiths Falls Triathlon (sprint)
July 7 -- Sydenham Triathlon (olympic)
July 14 -- Graham Beasley Duathlon (spr or oly)

That's the plan for now. Just so you know!

The other part of the post I lost was about my reecent commitment to Yoga. This not only sees me taking about 6-8 classes each week, but I also volunteer there to do whatever needs doing. This is great for my body and my sense of being part of a community, but what it has done here is remove me too much from you all. I often go into Ottawa early in the morning for a class, then just stay there until the evening, either doing another class, or getting in a swim, or just hanging around.

That explains why there are gaps in my presence here, and I am working to improve that. I am probably going to skip either my Tuesday or Thursday morning class, just to give one extra mosning at home and on the computer. Well see what i can make happen!

The big benefit to me is that I'm able to buy a seniors pass for $90/mo, and that gives unlimited classes. So, since about March 17 I have taken 60 classes, with each being 90 minutes long. My body loves it and my mind loves it, but for now it is taking time away fom you guys and my own training. The latter is expendable, given my body's problems and the general need for a kind of "down" season after the past four furious ones, anyhow, but I really should be better with the group here.

Blah, blah, blah!

RACE REPORT -- EARLY BIRD SPRINT DUATHLON

This was one of 11 events happening at the same location on Saturday morning (see post a couple above this for participant numbers, as well as general comments). I have done the du here a few times, but never the triathlons, which are chaotic pool swims. The venue has some advantages, the main one being a scenic parkway along the Ridea Canal that is closed ot traffic during the race. The disadvantage is that much of the run is one grass, which I never enjoy. Another advantage is that it is only about 35 minutes from home!

I got up about 4:45, aiming to leave at 5:20 to get there right when transition opened. Bike racks are not assigned, so first-come-first-served is in operation. And as I am an early bird person myself, the name of this race fits for me! I had a bagel and tea for breakfast, headed off, and got there as the fifth person on-site. Nabbed a great rack spot, and then just hung around until my race started at 8. I nibbled some on a Clif Mojo bar, sipped some HEED, and ate a gel about 10 minutes before my start.

FIRST RUN (2km)
Both duathlon races started at the same time, so there weren't many of us -- 66 or so. This run is an out-and back, about 40% on grass that is not especially even. I pushed a pretty good pace and mostly stayed at my edge. Cursed the grassy parts. Enjoyed the pretty morning, first one we had had in a while.
8:38 (4:20/km; 7:12/mile)

T1 - 1:15

BIKE (23.8km)
This is two loops on the Colonel By Parkway. It gradually descends going north, climbs gradually heading south. I have raced on this road many times, and most times the wind is very tricky, swirling along the canal and wreaking havoc around the buildings of Carleton University. On Staurday, though, it was straightforward -- in our faces going north (or downish), and at our backs heading south (or uppish), providing a nice counterbalance to topography! I pushed this quite hard, msotly feeling that I had my bike legs despite limited training since March. It was great on the first loop having just other sprint duathletes to race against, but by the second loop we had been joined by the other du people, plus the super-sprint and try-a-tri folks. I had a half-bottle of HEED and drank a few times from it
40:07 (35.5kmh; 21.6mph)

T2 - 1:35

SECOND RUN (5km)
Lots of people running, and trying to navigate too many narrow grassy areas between the roadway and the gully. To add to this, a part that is usually a road that is runnable was having work done on it, so that involved more grass-running. And then a trail part, too -- bah! I didn't feel too great on this run, but at the turnaround I was right at 11 minutes, so knew my time would be okay. Two guys I had passed on the bike passed me back on the run, and I never reeled them in. Oh well.
22:27 (4:33/km; 7:23/mile)

1/1 -- M60-64
10/44 -- overall

14th on first run, 8th on bike*, 12th on second run

*That 8th, though, is from the official results, which combine T1+bike+T2. That official time is 43:01, but what I put above is my actual time and speed JUST on the bike, and not including the conflated times.

OVERALL
Glad I did it, keeps my had in the racing game. It tells me my speed is still there even with greatly reduced training of late.....but that i probably can't hold this fitness for forever this way. That is, i need to get my body more weller so I can get back to training harder. I hate thses small races, though, where I am the only one in my age group. There were other M60-64 on site, but they were doing one of the other 10 races being held there. Sigh.

RACE PHOTOS, TOO

The company that does the photos for this series always shoots many, many, many. Many. Manymany.

So, if you want, go to www.zoomphoto.ca, and then click on Early Bird Tri/Du and Colonel By Classic (that's the run-only part of the day). Then for participant #, my bib number was 321.

I actually like a couple from each running set (first batch were end of 1st run, copming into T1, second batch was approaching the finish). The bike ones are okay, but not too inspired.

Do I look menacing in black?

JEFF -

Des that mean you won't be sharing them with us?

FWIW, I haven't mentioned anything about the photos from my first race. They show me in all of my just-emerged-from-winter whiteness, not to mention a bit less of "tone", shall we say.

My mouth seems to get skewed when I race. I don't think it nomally takes on that configuration, but it's there in the photos. Arg.

Has anybody ever had stroopwafles? I had them years ago they are a Dutch "cookie". I love these things. Anyway one of the people in my spin class gave me a Honey Waffle made by Honey Stinger. Yum! Its based on the stroopwafle I'm thinking about getting some for the bike portion.

George,

They always give us old ladies a pink cap.  I'll give you a few in September.  I guess once I was yellow.  You have to be pretty secure to wear a pink cap but you can handle it.

Steve,

Since you are into yoga now, I have some questions.  Do you do it to keep yourself more flexible or to stretch.  Maybe they are the same thing.  I have a tape called "Flexible Warrior". It is distributed by Troy Jacobson and is advertised for multi sport.  It does not specify what kind of yoga it is so maybe it is a variety of whatever they think makes sense for multi sport athletes. I think it is a very  good invertment of time but you probably want to do it the rigtht way.  What do you think?

Ellen

Steve - Great photos. Man you were not kidding, he does take a lot of photos.  I like that helmet, what kind is it?

Ellen - Sure bring me a pink hat and I will sport it around DC. Im not afraid to wear Pink.  Its funny about 3 years ago me and my wife went shopping at the outlet to get me some new clothes and I went into the Polo Outlet and walked out with 5 short sleeve button downs. They were pattern shirts and not solid color.  Well when I was shopping my wife was not with me. When we got home I showed her my shirts and she started to laugh.  Out of the 5 shirts only 1 did not have pink in it, where as 4 of them had some sort of pink stripes.  So Yes I will wear Pink.

Has anyone rode a bike with disc wheels, I was just thinking this afternoon I went on a 15mile bike and it was pretty windy, some parts the wind was coming from the side and the bike kept pushing to the side.  I thought if I had a disc wheel that might have been hard to control, atleast the wind was able to cut through the spokes which made a cool whistle sound.

Ok about pictures.  According to Article 5, Paragragh 2, line 4-7 of the Got Your Mojo WORKIN handbook, it states that all race photos need to be made public to the group.  Now If I posted my big whale belly photos coming out of the water for yall to see, then I do want to see some race photos. So lets have them.

Nice write up George.

I found an Olympic in July-very near home. It will not be wetsuit legal-July in Texas=very warm water. And, it will be another $100+ entry fee. I have had a full season of events and the fees are being felt but I will consider it. The wetsuit thing bothers me, hopefully I can get enough OWS to feel more confident not having that extra buoyancy.

The same organization also has a half marathon planned Oct 9th which seems to be a logical time plus one in November as  bench marks toward my Dec marathon.

Jeff -  I know what you mean, those fee add up and you sure have done a lot of races this year.  I still have to pay my fees for my July, Aug & Oct Tri Races and then Nov Half Marathon.  I guess for my Birthday next month I will ask my family to pitch in and try and pay for atleast 2 of the tri races.  Im just glad my wife is on board with me getting healthy becuase since i just started racing this year, there has been a lot I had to buy so it has been pretty expensive.

Beautiful piece! You'd 'fessed up to us about your family history a few months ago, but the published piece is even more lucid and compelling. It is also very fine to see your new Team in Training "signature" line, and your commitment to all those unknown others. You've crafted a new life for yourself, a few times over in the past half year!

JEFF -

I hear you about the non-wetsuit swim, and only in the spirit of full disclosure will I tell you that I have yet to do a non-wetsuit triathlon. There've been about 80 of them, and all have been wetsuit-legal......and I'm never in a hurry to try to find a race where the water temps are above 78F.

Ou very own ELLEN did Eagleman 70.3 last June (and will do it again in a few weeks), and for the first time in its hostory it was not wetsuit-legal. That threw a whole legion or two of wily veterans into a tizzy, as it is not an easy course to do even in a wetsuit. There is a current to deal with (it's in an estuarine river), and that can be tricky, and in some years there have been little jellyfish that carry a pesky sting, and then it's 1.2 miles. I have done Eagleman twice, '03 and '04, and I would not have wanted to do it without my wetsuit. (My years also did not feature the jellyfish.) Hopefully for Ellen and all others this year, it will be wetsuit-legal --- and jellyfish-free!
