Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() uhcoog - 2011-08-04 1:23 PM Jen what time do you go to bed? Not eating after 5-5:30 is just asking to cheat around 9 IMO. Plan a healthy snack like 1/2c cottage cheese and fruit about 45 minutes to an hour pre bedtime. I go to bed around 10. Sometimes I fall asleep on the couch at 9:30. I'm really hungry between 8-9. REALLY hungry. LOL I eat an extremely large dinner though. Only meat, veggies, and fruit (occasionally, like 1-2 times a month, we'll eat a whole grain pasta, or stir fry with rice, or potatoes). I don't limit portion sizes at dinner - don't need to right now. You're probably right. Not eating after 5:30 was a pretty decent weight loss strategy before I started training for triathlons (it worked!), but I don't really need to do that anymore. It's just habit, I think. I don't necessarily choose unhealthy snacks, but I do pick, pick, pick. Perhaps if I planned a solid snack, then I would be satisfied and wouldn't feel the need to return to the kitchen.

![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() kaburns1214 - 2011-08-04 9:46 AM karen26.2 - 2011-08-03 10:10 PM pbrown70 - 2011-08-03 9:44 PM kaburns1214 - 2011-08-03 5:44 PM Funny, I since switched things around and am eating my soup and asparagus later and switched the bar for almonds at 5 p.m. All the numbers pretty much stay te same, just more "real" food. My biggest limiter right now is my body composition. If I want a big PR at IMFL, I need to get my body comp in line. Its just easy to eat things I shouldn't (that's why there are no more chocolate chips in the house). I think that if you are doing the right type of lifting routine ( not the typical tri workouts)your body comp will change very quickly. Your body burns more cals lifting than you think. A 30 minute workout burns about 400-500 cals vs same time jogging burns 230-250. If you create a arobic workout your body will be burning even more cals all day long. The amont of work you put in and the diet you eat you will shreded.
What would be a good strength training workout? And how many days a week is beneficial? I'm all for boosting my metabolism and dropping about 10 pounds before Wisconsin. Maybe this will help. My problem is I get to the gym and don't really know what to do. I need something specific to follow. Two thoughts here (and I'd be curious as to what Scott and Bryan think): 1. In my experience weight loss is 90% and 10% exercise, just adding stregnth training may make you stronger but I'm not sure its going to help with the weight loss. 2. You're racing IMWI in 5 weeks, training wise I don't know that adding serious stregnth training now is the best idea. You're at your biggest weeks right now and just need to get through them, then you need to taper and actually letyou body rest and recover. If you wantto add strength, I would do after your race. 1. I'm not an expert but, I did stay at a holiday inn express last night. With that said weight loss is not 90% diet 10% exercise. It is more like 50% diet, 40% weight training and 10% cardio. The reason this is true is because the more muscle mass you have the higher your metabolism is. Like I was saying before it is anaerobic vs aerobic, when you lift weights your body continues to burn cals all day. Doing cardio ie. bike, run and swim your body burns cals during the workout and not much more. The prefect mix would be to combine weight training with plometerics and cardio. 2. I do agree with the rest of you I probably wouldn't start a weight training program with 5 weeks to go before a long race. |

My oldest (6) is fearful of transitioning to two wheels. We've tried different strategies, and he won't bite. His bike is sitting in the garage, untouched. I put the training wheels back on it yesterday (just raised them a bit), and my husband thought that was a bad idea. I don't know. I figure he'll do it when he's ready. My 4 year old wants to try and ride without her training wheels. Do you think Conrad will be more interested and less fearful if he sees his younger sister do it?
Hi Jen - we have used this with all of our kids and it has worked great. My son started 2 wheeling at 3 yo. I have also taught my nieces and nephews and a couple friends kids. We have a great hill at our park. http://bgindy.com/articles/teach-your-kids-to-ride-in-one-easy-lesson-pg470.htm |

What's extraordinary is your ego or was it your superior genetics! lol! Here try a google search: effects of resistance training on weight loss better yet here is a link http://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/cardio-vs-strength-training-workouts There is a bunch more which you probably won't go to so I'll summarize. aerobic activity burn slightly more calories while you are doing them but Building muscle mass increases your resting metablolism. net effect increase weight loss. Hey, all I'm saying is that if you mix in weight training you will be better off especially if you are hitting a wall with your weight loss. Also I know it works because I loss 75lbs in three months and never did more than 45 minutes of cardio in a day. |

I do agree with the rest of you I probably wouldn't start a weight training program with 5 weeks to go before a long race. In regards to #1.... I'd agree with you if we were talking about Joe Public who has sat on a couch for most of their life. You're pretty much describing Crossfit. Crossfit and Crossfit Endurance in conjunction with a good diet set up will get you ready for just about anything life can throw at you. In general life doesn't throw Ironman distance events at you. If you are looking to perform at your best in an Ironman and lose weight simultaneously you need to tweak your diet to make it happen. Also I'd like to point out that if you take your diet lightly enough to only attribute 50% of the equation to it you will not lose weight and really won't be fueled properly to perform the other 50% of said equation to the fullest. Again I'm a huge proponent of learning to fuel/diet first due to personal experiences. I worked out the same way from 2007-2010 and only after I became very regimented in diet did I see the improvements I desired from day one. |

You and having houseguests around a race. I apparently give off a leave me the F alone vibe starting about 36 hours out from a race. Should be fun in October when 15 or so friends and family join us in Austin for the HIM.
Easy swim, core, and easy run this morning. Time to try and work. I always have a hard time focusing on work the Friday before any race. |

I have, I'd like to some day, just not sure if this is the year or not. Rocktractor and his wife are doing the Rock n Roll Vegas one in December and wanted me to go, but I don't know yet. And there's a big one here in Albuquerque I could do, but I need to check on WHEN it is and make sure it doesn't conflict with preparing for the Oly or anything else first. |

For instance I have no doubt I could run the Houston Half or Full but will probably do one held in a suburb first. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I went back to masters this morning. I have not been in months. The coach is retiring (just from coaching) and a friend of mine and I decided we should go say bye to him. He really helped me (she's a former college swimmer and didn't need as much help as I), he did IM Florida a couple of years ago. It was nice to see him again. It made me realize how much masters helped me. When I go to the pool now and swim alone, I never really push myself. I might have to check out his replacement and see if I like them. This weekend I have a 100 mile ride Saturday, followed by an hour run. Then on Sunday I have a 2+ hour run. There's slight chance of rain both days, I just hope it holds off tomorrow. Good luck to everyone racing! |
