Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() REAL DISCUSSION QUESTION: My 10-year-old daughter has thrown down the gauntlet: She wants to win the Walkathon at her school this year. She's been 2nd and 3rd for her grade nearly every year with no training, just putting her mind to the task at hand and walking a ton. But this year she's in 5th grade (last year at her school) and has her sights on the plaque that hangs outside of the office: She wants her name on there. Time to train!!! I told her she'd have to work at this. (In spite of the Walkathon title, there is plenty of running involved.) I've started taking her out for daily runs, we are right at 2 miles now. We are doing walk breaks, largely driven by her, although I'm trying to get a little more tough on her and today I only allowed three small breaks. I'd like to see her running more miles w/no walk breaks, but we'll get there in due time. Day one our pace was 11:58. Day two 11:17. Day three 10:40. Atta girl. Yesterday we went out and bought two new pairs of running shoes (two, because the guy at the store and I liked her stride in one pair better, she liked the cush factor in another pair better [which were an older model at 40% off], so I caved and went for both). What are your thoughts on how I should proceed with her? The Walkathon is October 5. I figure right now 2-3 miles a few days a week is a good thing to build up to. This girl is driven and knows how to work for what she wants. I want to honor that, get her in tip-top running shape, but also not injure her. The Walkathon officially takes place during lunch recess (about :30 to :45), and then after school for about 2-3 hours (can't remember how long). It's not unusual for kids to log 8-10 miles. I want to help her win!! (And goodness, I don't know what I'll do if she works her butt off and doesn't win, but that can go into the Life Lesson column, with which we already have plenty of experience.) |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Kyla, I'm a big believer in walk-run, I use it for all long runs and whenever I'm nursing an injury. The great thing is that it often makes you faster rather than slower and also keeps you aerobic and having fun, because of this I think it's ideal for getting kids into running. The problem most kids have is going out too fast then feeling miserable later and hating running from then on - that's how I remember all my school cross country runs! I'd be setting a run-walk interval like 3:1 and then building time until she gets faster then maybe going to 5:1. I bet she'll get super fast and you wont be able to keep up! |

For those of us not racing, tell us your best childhood olympic memory! No racing here. Just plenty of mental training, aka freaking out. Most of my favorite childhood olympic memories are mostly from winter sports; torvil and dean, scott hamilton, bill johnson, picabo street but Mary Lou Retton is definitely there too. Serious question alert. Well, maybe not so serious but I need some ideas on how to carry my crap on the bike. My current bento was a last minute purchase pre-HIM last summer and I hate it. It's flimsy and cumbersome. But maybe I don't need a bento box. This is what I have; extra tube and levers currently tucked under my seat, small pump (never used a O2 cartridge before and likely to pull a "muppet") currently attached to my downtube, and then small things planned such as advil, immodium, pretzel M&Ms, single use Chamois buttr which I could just throw in my shirt pocket. What am I missing? What do you pack for the IM bike? Do you have an xlab or something for water/drinks on the back? I am an Infinit guy, so I will have two bottles of 800 cal/each with a few gels or bonk breaker in the bento. If you are wearing a bike jersey you'll have lots of room for 'stuff.' How about on the downtube? I put my 'tools' in a bottle on there. I dont think your missing anything vital.

(And goodness, I don't know what I'll do if she works her butt off and doesn't win, but that can go into the Life Lesson column, with which we already have plenty of experience.) This is awesome! Good for Shea!! Just be consistent and help her out the door when she doesn't want to go. Perhaps make some sort of schedule with her. Establish goals along the way. I'm not sure I'd focus on pace like you did for the three days in a row. You know as well as I do how varied our runs and how we feel on those runs can be. At her age 9and ours too!!!) I'd think its more important to get out and do some work towards the goal rather than getting her into the habit of comparing day to day. Maybe compare week to week or even two week segments by using milestones and goals. You have the positive vibe she'll need for success and failure.. that counts for a ton. Go Shea!!! Keep us posted on the progress and how you attack this... |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for the feedback guys!! Yeah, David, I'm with you on the run-walk and teaching kids how not to sprint out of the gates. She ran a 5K with me when she was 8 and I worked soooo hard to get her not to sprint. I've made her go slow and have let her choose walk breaks, but I like the idea of making them more formal going forward. Fatty, fear not -- she has no idea what times we are running. I just think it's cool to see the times come down -- and I know she'll be faster than me sooner or later. Also, fear not on the motivation. Because I'm adding these on to my usual runs, she is the one begging me to go running!! I think I will have to hold her back! But making some interim goals is a GREAT idea. Maybe just running X miles X days/week or something. I don't want her time obsessed at all. Really, if she can go into this and run 50-65% of the time, I think she has this in the bag. And this early-season running will do wonders for her soccer too, so it's a win-win!! Not to mention we are LOVING the time together!! Lucky me!! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi all! Been lurking, but my Dad's home from the hospital, so I'm back! Loving the Olympics!!! Fan of the beach volleyball - Walsh is a local, and my oldest is working at the AVP, so that's fun. Water polo is a sport we hold dear here - so that's been a blast, as well as the swimming. I know several members of the swimming contigent, so we've been following closely. Trying to figure out a way to discretely hang some posters - but not easy with my girl not living at home anymore!! Favorite old memories include Mark Spitz, Pablo Morales, Janet Evans, Dara Torres......and the Hockey dream team from way back when!! For the record, I'd like credit for not olympic-bashing any of the other countries on this MG. Can't believe nobody else has taken a shot after the soccer game...... |

No bike jersey but I finally found my perfect tri top that is long enough in the torso and has two good sized pockets. I'll be wearing that from start to (hopefully) finish. |

I use a darkspeed zipper bag on my top tube. I think the simpler you can make things the less you have to worry about it. Just wish there were more 1 choc chip in the PB& choc chip flavor. hence a couple pretzel m&ms to top things off. :signed chocolate addict: Re the SN bag. Not a sock guy on the bike either. Run--- YES, bike NO. Personal preference. I think several years back I discovered that it was such a pain to put socks on wet/dirty feet coming out of T1 I bagged it. Again, that is just me. |

I think several years back I discovered that it was such a pain to put socks on wet/dirty feet coming out of T1 I bagged it. Again, that is just me. No socks here either. I wear them on cold rides here in the spring, but that's it. Never racing, never on the trainer, never had problems. BUT! Seeing the conditions Suzy trained in yeterday, I'd throw some socks into my SN bag. And I'd be sure to have toe covers in my T1 bag just in case (depending on weather reports, of course). Was secretly hoping my runner girl wouldn't want to run today -- I'm trashed. But she is chomping at the bit! LOVE IT!!! We'll be hitting the trails later this morning, maybe upping our distance today. Oh... and by the way... HAPPY BIRTHDAY STEVE!!!!! (Cougar color just for you!) |

Bonk Breakers recently chimed in on ST with the flavors they're supplying for races (If you missed it they're mini sizes approx half a reg bar) but even before that I figured if the IM symbol was on the package it was a good bet. Just wish there were more 1 choc chip in the PB& choc chip flavor. hence a couple pretzel m&ms to top things off. :signed chocolate addict: Re the SN bag. Def another tube and a Coke (also tested) but I wasn't planning on anything else. Toyed with adding socks but I've never worn socks biking with no ill effects. You aren't wearing socks on the bike?
Not a sock guy on the bike either. Run--- YES, bike NO. Personal preference. I think several years back I discovered that it was such a pain to put socks on wet/dirty feet coming out of T1 I bagged it. Again, that is just me. (Cougar color just for you!) no socks here either. lazy canadians and there socks! happy birthday buddy!!! |

I know you;ve heard this 100 times before, but test everything out on the next two long rides and then close down the worry, pack the bike and get ready to rock and roll! Already tested and re-tested except for the fact that I've brought my bento along for carrying some Bonk Breakers. Since those will be on course I'll nix the bento. Just making sure I'm not forgetting something obvious. Probably some hottie HS boys influence. Yeah, I was just thinking about the rain Suzy had to endure yesterday and additional gear if necessary. Love the fire in Shea. She'll crush that walkathon. Happy Birthday, Steve! |

Thanks for the birthday wishes. My birthday gift to myself (and RP who's bday is in 5 days) I signed us both up for our first 50k in 10 weeks. He will crush it, I will survive. OH DEAR!! Been wanting to do one for several years, just no balls to sign up for one. |
