First 10th at 6:00 pace, then 2nd 10th at recovery pace and alternated back and forth for that mile. After that it took all I had left to run the last two miles home at an easy pace. ![]() | ![]() 8 mile easy run. Hot and humid. Found out you need to prepare for runs, at least by hydrating a little. Got up too late and noticed I had better be out running within 15 minutes, or I wouldn't get my miles in. Found out it is much better to get up at least 45 minutes before running. Oh well. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Had a PR going when I started the run. Today's race was a nutrition learning experience. I think I'm not supposed to mix simple sugars (GU and honey stinger gels) with Perpeteum, Heed and Endurolytes. From mile 3.5 of the run, all I wanted to do is throw up and I was pretty much walking because I was afraid I would. Didn't want to eat after the race, but did eat a little. Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Matthews - 2012-09-03 1:59 AM No workout for today. Had a look and tried on some Newtons. Any one got any good or bad experiences with them. I was read an article the other day that said its no use having big heal support when you land on the middle of your foot. I looked at my runners and the heel is like new but not the middle. Are newton( or any other brand) the way to go? Sorry if tis question has been bashed around already. I ran my first Ironman marathon in Newtons and did pretty well, I trained with those for an entire season and they are good shoes. I quit using them because some video analysis of my gait and foot landing showed that they're not the right option for me. Regardless, I recommend them highly and especially if you are a midfoot/forefoot striker. |

Can carry 4 bottles and I guess I could buy more bottle mounts and carry more if needed. Mitch: Is the 2-bottle system belt the same as the 4-bottle system belt? I only need the two bottle one for the near future but would hate to have to buy another one once (or if) I increase my mileage in a year or so. Thanks |

![]() | ![]() Jackie, Sorry to hear about your run leg. Nutrition is a tough one. Too little and you bonk, and too much and you want to throw up. You don't need that many calories for an Olympic. Matthews, I have two pairs of Newton's, which I switched into from Vibram Five Fingers. I like them. The MV2's are very tight in the toe box, but I am getting used to them, and I like them because they are very light. They also wear very fast however. The Distances are my other pair. I like them as well. I use the MV2's for track work and faster runs and the Distances for general mileage. Not sure which I will wear for my marathon. Leaning toward the lighter MV2's. Joe Petto, I don't actually agree that it's normal to lose toenails. I've only lost one (big toe last January in a pair of Vibrams). It is pretty well known that this is due to your foot slamming into the front of your shoe, especially during downhill portions. If your shoes fit right, this shouldn't happen. Everyone, Several participants in this group were asking how to get their run times down. My wife competed in the Victory Memorial 10K here in Minnesota today which is called the fastest Minnesota 10k. It is put on by the Minnesota Distance Runners Association, and every race they put on has lots of very fast runners. (My wife is doing great. She is putting in times which give her a shot at a BQ in her first marathon this fall.) One thing I noticed is that elite age group runners look different than elite age group triathletes. Specifically they are thinner. Much thinner. And they wear less clothing. 1) Weight. The general rule of thumb is you get 2 seconds per mile faster for every pound you lose. So 10 pounds is about two minutes off a 10k or 9 minutes off a marathon. 2) They wear almost nothing. Heat dissipation matters. |

Samy, I dont know about the Chamois but I use a little bodyglide and then bandaids on top. this has worked for me through numerous 16+ mile runs. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sammy: Chamois butter for your chamois in your cycling or Tri shorts, body glide for nipples, inside thighs, feet, etc. I used some euro style chamois butter for the first time yesterday, little bit of menthol action, but seemed to work well. Regarding the amphipod system, I have the 4 bottle system but typically use only 2 bottles. If its really hot or really long run or combo of both I add bottles. You can take off the extra mounts, or in my case leave them off if you are too lazy to deal with putting them on or off. It's a very flexible system. Customer service is great too. I was at a race expo and talked to the amphipod rep, told him I had a cap that cracked when the bottle dropped on sidewalk in dead of winter, he took my address and sent me a new cap for free. -Mitch |

The black one is still black and I was expecting to lose the nail, but it just seems to be growing out over the top. I'm half expecting that 6 months down the line it's going to suddenly fall off... |

No shoes are going to accomodate that and what I need to do (which I often forget) is to wear a protective sleeve. When I used to play tennis it was a big problem. |
