When I got up this morning the half iron folks were biking past the condo as I walked the dog, and while there were a few regrets....not many. So I think it was the right decision. I don't know why, but i genuinely did not feel ready....which is just ridiculous as I'm definitely physically ready for a sprint! But I drank great quantities of good beer as a result. ??. And Saturday I slept ten hours.....haven't done that in months. Next weekend I am heated up for. Jenn....yes, it's the same race as my first ever tri last year, and should be a good time. I have mixed feelings about dropping to the try a tri, but I think it will be better for me to go into the first semi blind race with a little less pressure. There is another tri I did last year a couple weeks later and I'm planning on that one as well. Once o have two under my belt I will branch out. A shot of the dog running on the beach in my place. Extreme Veteran 2098 Alberta | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Well the day started early...woke up at 2am and could not get to sleep. No real reason other than old age I guess. 5:30: Got out of bed this morning to a breeze and clouds threatening to rain. Made a pot of coffee and woke up my wife. Double checked we had everything and had a cup of coffee. My son and daughter woke up and visited with us. The condo we rent is only about a block from race so at 6:30am we grabbed our bikes, massive 2 man transition box and headed down. Thankfully my son came down to help set up our transition. They weren't quite ready so we helped move the last couple of racks. Setup our gear and went back to condo for more coffee, peanut butter and toast. Back down at 7:30 to put on wetsuits and final preparations. Got in the water and went for a quick swim to warm up. Close to 350 people starting at same time in confined area...I chose to go to the front. Swim started not to bad but seemed to be a chore all the way for me. Was glad to be done. Transition was a bit rough as my son told me...could not find my race belt or my shot blocks. Left on my bike without race bib and shot blocks. Bike went okay, probably could have hammered the ride more but... Second transition was smoother. put on race belt, found shot blocks(they were in my bike helmet! extra padding I guess!) Carried them for a while than dropped on back of some guys truck when i decide I was not going to eat them... Run flat for about 800meters then up hill followed by rolling hills. I was a human turnstile...all sorts of people were passing me! The brutal hill with about 2km left just about killed me. My run was barely faster than a walk. Down a long hill and a bit of flat to finish. Now the stats: Improved my time by 2 minutes from last year. Marginally better in all disciplines. Disappointed by my last month of training. bad ankle for a couple of weeks and plain poor training for the rest. Need to be better disciplined. Cost me a beer from Dave. Ended up 5th in my age category and 37th out 151. Better time by 2 minutes this year but I fell off the podium. My wife on the other had improved my 3 minutes and defended her 3rd place age group title...She crushes the bike portion Best part is the beer. While I would like to say I am a well disciplined triathlete who doesn't drink beer before races but i would be liar. As stated previous I enjoyed the "I've been thinking about getting the band back together" ISA, also the I am so freaking hoppy. Managed to buy a "quiet rye't IPA" and "last cast IPA from fernie brewing. Not sure if the warm weather or the race but all sure tasted good! Pics to come later! Disclaimer: I have drank a few beers already so typing accuracy may not be up to snuff. |

189 Quakertown, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Good Job Gretchen! Good Job Thor! Better is better. You may not have moved forward as much as you want, but you went forward. Don't forget that. Sorry to hear about the setback Sandi. Today I did my bike workout across that bridge again before heading home from vacation. The next 2 weeks are crunch time and then taper and GO. Goals this week: Follow training plan and don't overthink things. This weekend is a full dry run on the bike course. Effort not on the race side, just building comfort and confidence. Beer Being as I was the only adult on the family vacation, I avoided beer. Then I got home and thought about having a few and decided against it. I know the effect of a few beers (I wanted quite a few) and I'm going to avoid any possible depressive side effects this close to the race. My beer will be my race reward. Added benefit of all of this is that I somehow managed to lose weight on vacation. Who the heck does THAT? I'm still a Clydesdale, but who knows for how long. Question It'll be nice to be back on the bike that I'm planning on using (narrow tire hybrid) versus the mountain bike I took to the beach. Interestingly enough, my Father-in-law's girlfriend has offered me her carbon road bike (Giant) for the last few practice weeks and the race. Changing this close to the race feels a little iffy. This race isn't about the podium. This is my first big time intro into a potentially addictive sport. It's about climbing the mountain because it's there. If things go well I'll have many chances to try that bike and maybe even use it to try to blaze my way to a podium. What do you all think? |

141 Colorado Springs, Colorado | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Anyone have any experience with building a bike from a frame set as opposed to buying an already complete bike? I'm sure I won't save any money, however the value of bike I get for the same price could be better. I saw a frame here on the classifieds that is my size and it got me wondering. |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by Snewo Originally posted by firebert Dave! Always good to hear from you. Glad you had a good vacation! When is your tri? It's your first right? I think you and I are the only true tri newbs left at this point BTW if you're watching TdF coverage you already know this, but there's a coupon code for ordering from headsweats directly (30% off) - BOBKE That may be cheaper than ordering through amazon, it may not, but usually the codes are 15-25% so 30% is a big deal I may or may not have hinted that I've wanted to do one particular triathlon for about 6 years but "things" always seemed to get in the way. I did a YMCA Sprint Tri this year in June. That sounds like exactly what you're gearing up for at the end of this month right? In my brain I'm not officially going to consider myself a triathlete until I do the Oly that I've wanted to do for 6 years.. It's August 9th and it's located a little north west of Philly at Lake Nockamixon. http://www.steelmantriathlon.com/ Thanks for the info (and the coupon code) I pulled the trigger on both the hat and the headband for under the bike helmet. i have the crank in my helmet too so that should work for me. I ran over that bridge today for my workout, I felt like I was on fire. I'm gonna give that hat a workout. John, Your Tri is at the end of this month right? How goes the tri clinic? Dave - while I believe you have already earned the title of Triathlete - I'm looking forward to the race report you're gonna post next month on the 9th. 4 weeks of training left. The joy you will experience will be worth the wait! And just think of how fast you'll go after losing weight on vacation - yea - who does that?!? Edited by Qua17 2015-07-13 2:02 PM |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by drfoodlove Hi all!! Just a quick update on my race today--full race report to follow when all my brain cells are working again. Race was great--super well organized, friendly folks, and a good route. I panicked on the swim, but managed a goodish time with a strong backstroke. Bike was awesome, way faster than my goal of 14.0mph. Run was meah...could have been better, but I came in just 16 seconds over my goal, including getting a huge calf cramp and attacked by a territorial bird at mile 2.6! Overall, 7 min faster than my overall goal and I feel like I left it all in the course!! Thanks for all your support!!!! BDAS rocks!!!!! That is simply fantastic Gretchen! All that training is paying off big time - especially on the bike! When you take into account your speed on the bike - it makes sense that your legs were a little tired for the run. 7 minutes faster is something to celebrate. Way to go!!! |

Sandi - I'm sorry things didn't work out like you planned but it's your life and you know yourself best. I feel that triathletes by their very nature are always willing to push the limit - to do more and be more... But sometimes it's hard enough just being who you are in the present moment. Do what you need to do to get a race or two under your best and take it from their. What you have already accomplished and your awesome attitude has been an inspiration to me. So - good luck next week! Are you racing on Sat. or Sunday? I'm doing an OLY on Saturday in honor of my son's hospital. Cute dog! |

423 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Here's the Tune-up video I promised earlier. My memory card ran out of space at the end but I got pretty much everything I wanted to say in there. The only thing I missed was that turning the barrel adjust too much will cause hesitation when shifting back down to the harder gears so you need to find a sweet spot where it shifts up and down nicely. The lower the quality of your derailleur and shifters will mean that you'll likely never get your shifts to be really snappy and might have to deal with some minor hesitation in shifts no matter what you do.

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business OK - just spent the past hour catching up on the forum.... Wow - we were a busy bunch this weekend! We are firing on all cylinders! Keep it up people. Here's an update on my training: You know that scene in Empire strikes back when Yoda is able to get the X Wing out of the swamp. Luke is incredulus and says - I don't believe it... and yoda replies, That is why you fail. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EwcYwax4Oo That's where I am with my training. Like Luke - I've come a long way - especially in the past week. The faster cadence thing has made me faster than ever. Today I rode three miles at 20+. Never, ever have I riden so fast. And while most of my rides have been in the 15 to 16 mile an hour range - that's a huge improvement from the 14 miles an hour I was doing two weeks ago. Yet, the more I think about it - the more I realize that I HAVE SO MUCH TO LEARN! I've always gotten to the finish line by working harder. I've never studied each element in triathlon but I know that doing so will help me immeasurably.... But where I am is at that place where I don't know what path to follow. I know I have a lot to learn but I don't have the money to hire a coach. Plus - my ADHD makes everything seem important. Anyone have any ideas on where I should start/focus? It seems like I still have a ton to learn about cadence... perhaps I should keep focusing there. PS - Today some idiot almost hit me. I was at a blinking yellow light - following behind a truck that was turning left. There were people waiting to turn but they had a blinking red light which meant that they had to wait for us to clear the intersection. So, as the truck was turning, it stopped abruptly probably because it didn't know if it had the clearance space to make the turn. I slowed down - keeping my eye on the truck in front of me... There was perhaps 8 feet between us. I saw something move out of the corner of my eye and it's an idiot making a left hand turn between us. If I hadn't have seen him and stopped, I would have hit the idiot. Angry - I raised my arms in exasperation and he looked at me like he hadn't done anything wrong. I worry about stupid people every day - their hurry to save 5 seconds gets bikers killed every day. Ugh, so angry! |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Morning Everyone! Scott and I were talking on facebook yesterday about trying to find a race next year where BDAS could come out in force. Scott suggested the Lake George Triathlon (http://www.adkracemgmt.com/race/lake-george-triathlon-festival/#.VaUPb8ZViko) but I'm hoping to do Rev3 Cedar Point. Since I'm thinking about trying to earn a legacy spot for Kona - I could do another ironman later in the year. But I thought I would put it out there for the group to think about. Where could we do a race next year where there would be options in terms of distance that would be centrally located for all of us. Thoughts? |

You can always work back up and feel more comfortable with longer races. Thor- great race report and your kids are super cute. I also felt like I was being passed way to much in my race. Dave O- good luck on the race DQ- intersections always scare me when I am in traffic and I worry people will not see me. I try to ride at 90 RPM. I have found that it has helped speed up my running cadence also. Having a second taper week due to a sprint this saterday. I'm still pretty sore but ready to get some miles back on so I can get ready for Oct. |

462 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Stumpy Creek race report: Got up early but didn't have any breakfast planned, big mistake. Left my brother in laws house trying not to wake anyone up and didn't stop to eat. I got out there early and set up transition. It was just me no cheering section so I had some time to just mill around. They announced that the water temp was close to 90 degrees! WTF that is too warm. It was an in water start and I made my way to the starting buoy. The water was warm, don't know if I mentioned that yet. Once the horn went off I started swimming. at first I was doing well, but with the water that warm I felt like I could not catch my breath. My legs began to sink making me work harder. This caused me to not be able to get my breathing under control which made me begin to mentally check out. All I could think about was how I could not get my butt up, could not breath, and was using way to much energy. By the time I reached the first turn I had pretty much given up on freestyle. I was doing breast stroke. On the way back I got my breath back and started to calm down. I had caught up with one person from my wave so at least I would not be last out of the water. finished decent, but was VERY glad to be out of the water. Took my time on T1 not slow but not rushed. ate a clilff bloc and had some water got my helmet, shoes, and glasses on then took the bike and I was off. Bike went well. It was a hilly course but I knew it would be. I passed several people early then kinda rode alone for a while. Had a girl announce on left but then she never came by guess she tucked in behind me. Nothing great or terrible happened on the bike. Going into t2 is a huge downhill which sucks because you just scrub the speed prior to dismount line so you had to climb the hill but no reward. T2 was good, bike shoes off, running shoes on then race belt and hat. Run was just as hilly as the bike. I ran for the first 2 miles then walked up the major hill. I noticed I was walking as fast as most were running and I was catching my breath and Heart rate was dropping. Once it leveled off I started running again. Since it was a 2 lap course I planned to do the same on the second lap. Run went pretty much without event. I followed my plan. It was a hot day so I drank at every water stop. Finished the OLY in 3:30. not stellar fast but not terrible. My A race is flat so I am glad my training races are harder so I should be better prepared. |

141 Colorado Springs, Colorado | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Awesome job Scott! You don't realize how much swimming in warm water takes out of you until you have to compete in it. It's like swimming through a bowl of soup. Surprised you didn't have more issues during the race since you didn't have breakfast. Guess your bonk resistance is high. Congrats on the race! |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business I just got back from swimming across the lake - a distance of 1.3 miles. I was hoping to average 2:32 per 100 but the waves and the winds really got in the way. I was still stoked to have set a PR of 59:21 and am hoping to break it during my "OLY" on Saturday. My race on Saturday is one I'm dreaming up to support my son's rehab hospital. As some of you know, JQ fell out of a 3rd story window when he was 2.5 years old and we spent 4 months at Franciscan Hospital for Children in Boston doing rehab. Then 2 years ago, he contracted a virus which brought about Guillain Barre syndrome which caused his nerves to deteriorate and not communicate with each other. So he spent 2 more months learning how to walk, talk, and eat again. Every year, the hospital hosts a 5K race but they changed the date of the race this year so we are supporting another young boy who has a similar neurological disorder as JQ. Christian, who is 3, has been there for more than a year and I'm doing the OLY in his honor even though I will be almost 900 miles away. If you have a few extra bucks in your pocket - it would be great if you would make a donation to help other families like ours who have been helped by this amazing hospital. As John can vouch for - Boston Children's hospital gets all the press and fund raising dollars in town and Franciscan needs all the help they can get. Here's the link: https://give.franciscanhospital.org/fundraise?fcid=461386 If you don't have any spare change - I would love it if you would dedicate your workout on Saturday to Franciscan. Let me know how far you go and I will share it with the family and with the hospital. Here's the link for the race: http://franciscanhospital.org/event/franciscan-hospital-children-ro... Thanks!
