Extreme Veteran 2098 Alberta | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Dave your schooling has let you down...Virginia central point?? Sheesh! I don't feel bad about suggesting Lake Havasu, AZ in April? I am there from April 15-26.
Five hours from Disneyland, LA, San diego. 2 hours from Las Vegas/Phoenix. Pick your poison. Originally posted by Qua17 So, I am lying in bed last night and thinking about what else - triathlon. I say to my wife, wouldn't it be cool if I could find an iron distance race to sign up for at the end of 2015 - one I could do this year. That sounds great honey... what ever you want to do. So I did a little research and asked around and there are very few iron distance races that late in the year that are still accepting applicants. One is Beach to Battle Ship - I got all excited thinking about racing with Scott but then I looked up the cost and the $500+ pricetag for the entry is out of my price range... I've been in a funk this morning- wanting to do something more, something bigger to cap off this year. I was thinking - perhaps I could ride a century or something like that. Then I just had another thought. What if we organized a BDAS Ironman/Half Ironman/Oly/Sprint race in late October or even early November. Worst case - we could start in a pool some where (or maybe even find a warm lake) and do loops so everyone could do a distance that would work for them. Maybe there is a 3 day Canadian holiday so we cold get some Canuks to join us. We could do it near boston or someplace else where someone could host us. Doing it in late October/ early November would allow scott some recovery time... We could even do it at a central point - like Virginia where I have family. I know I have the fever and it's making me crazy. What do you else think? Most importantly - good luck to everyone who is racing this weekend! |

Hey Mr. Molson - This was the suggestion for a tri in Oct. or November.... And since it wasn't an official race and since I can't afford to really travel - I was thinking of a place where I could host people on the cheap (either my place in Boston or my in-laws place in VA.. Since you save so much $$$ (Canadian dollars) with your beer selections - maybe we can crash at your place. I'm sure your better half would love that |

I can think of other places I'd rather be but it's an Oly and they also offer a Sprint I believe, so some options for everyone. Dave Q, I definitely want to do NE Season Opener next spring so you'll have to keep on mentoring!! For those in MA, I will be at Lake George this year for sure if any of you are thinking of coming up. |

1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by aviatrix802 Originally posted by b2b14 I don't even look at speed. I set up my watch to show me cadence only. I find a gear I can hold 85-90 with a normal effort. Yes I know that is very vague but I don't know how else to say it. I know what effort I can hold and keep it there while holding 85-90 rpm. Same here. Dave Q, I used to mash at the beginnings of hills - I don't so much anymore so I'm not spent by the top and for the ride. Intervals will help build strength/power and eventually you'll be doing the same RPM in harder gears. Patience, Grasshopper. One other thing to think about...when I went for my fitting, one of the things Ian Buchanan (Fit Werx) told me was that for my particular situation I am so lite that I can't exert much in the way of power without significantly increasing my strength. He recommended intervals (which I'm now doing) and actually getting into time trials (these are both good ideas for everyone!). He said so many people don't ever discover how much they have to give until they start doing time trials. He said many triathletes train to just keep going and keep a steady pace over a long distance rather than ever train power. I see someone like Alan's workouts on Strava and see the TT work and intervals he does (as well as my friends who also race) and I'm trying to incorporate more and more of this. Hill repeats, speed intervals, etc. He said by the time you finish a TT, you should be absolutely spent from going all out. This is what will increase your power/strength in the long run, and couple that with a good 85-95 cadence and you should start to see results in the form of increased speed. (then he told me once I tap out on my road bike I should consider a tri bike because they'll just beat me every time no matter what I do! hahahaha). So for example, I might do an hour ride (nothing is flat here) and do a 10 minute warm up, maybe 6-10 x 2 minute hard intervals with 2-5 minutes moderate/easy pedaling, and a 10 minute cool-down (I adjust depending on the terrain, etc). I still try to maintain or even increase my cadence and crank it up a couple of gears. I am sucking wind hard by the end of the 2 minutes. When you go back to your original gear, it will seem easier and easier. Over time this "comfortable gear" will increase. Now let's see if this works! LOL! I'm still experimenting, but that's not much different than what I do running! Clear as mud? |

I'm still experimenting, but that's not much different than what I do running! Clear as mud? Actually - it is pretty clear and I thank you for passing on the info! Its all about finding ways of going faster. Riding faster - just like running faster - will make you faster. I just need to systematically incorporate these great ideas into my training so as to maximize performance and avoid injury. But there is technique in everyone of these great suggestions. Not only do I need to do hill repeats - I'm the king of hill repeats - I just don't do them effectively as I could. I'm sure there is a science to doing them to gain the maximum effect... Again - it goes to changing the paradigm from just doing the workout to doing the workout right. Might have to add that to my signature line. I race tomorrow at 7:15 am! Good luck everyone! My goal for tomorrow is to break 3:50....for my Olympic - like distance. 1.4 mile swim, 24.4 mile ride with more than 1000 feet of elevation, and 6.2 run. |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business I finished my unofficial Olympic today in 3:41:39 with more than 1300 feet of elevation gain. My goal had been 3:50:46... Not going to lie - As I ran up the last hill I was thinking about Gretchen and trying to match the improvement she showed last weekend. Thanks for the inspiration Dr. 400. To celebrate - I'm enjoying a Gangster Frog IPA from Hoppin' Frog - a brewery in the great city of Cleveland Ohio. After a dip in the lake (and a shower) I'm headed to the crappy brewery in town for a tasty flight. So stoked about my time but what made my day was Scott getting a race shirt for Christian -= the child who has spent more than a year recovering from a virus that attacked his nervous system. When we meet - the beers are on me... Such a class move and I know that Christian's entire family who is so in need of a win will be thrilled. If you would like to make a donation to Franciscan - here is the link:https://give.franciscanhospital.org/fundraise?fcid=461386 (if you click on the link - the kid wearing race number 433 in the yellow tee shirt is my son JQ who spent five months at the rehab hospital). Race report after a few flights... priorities! |

Daughters race got stormed out. she was getting ready to get in pool, we had been watching the storm clouds roll in, then the lightning and thunder started. Waited 2 hours but the race company called it. I looked at my wife and said "my poor bike stuck in the rain like this" Hahahaha. Jones race company gave all the kids medals anyway, but I took my daughters. She is going to do the race at the lake this week with family there. Then I'll let her have it. My brother in law had a great race (his first) and wants to do another one next season. Having an over the edge by unknown brewing company. Actual name of the company. Extreme Veteran 1648 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Nice races! Gretchen- how do you get sick a nice photo? I always looked like I was dragged by a large dog before getting back up and running by the photographer. Dave- for my workout in honor of your cause a ran a lifetime longest run of 6.5 miles (well I did 9:1 run walks- but I kept going). Thank you for the motivation! I was thinking about the kids in rehab when I wanted to quit and kept going. Then I had a Guiness because Guiness is good for you! |
