m55morris - 2009-07-03 10:19 PM Had a sweet ride tonight.  Averaged 17.66 mph for 24.9 miles.   It took 1 hour 24 minutes, so it is a mid to long ride for me.  A normal ride for me average 16.5 mph, and on a short fast ride I am at 16.9 mph.  I have been working riding in the drops more, so that may be the deference, but really encouraging for me to see some movement in my bike times.

Wow!  Nice pace! I'm working up to that, but not quite there on my long rides.

Congrats on the new bike.  I don't think there is anything cooler than getting new gear and a new bike has to be the very best.

Congratulations!

Thanks everybody! I'll post some pics soon. I'm heading out on my test ride to work, which will also be my first official challenge ride for the month. The body parts that sit on the seat are pretty sore from yesterday's, and I imagine it's not going to improve when I get back on the bike. Is it possible to do an entire ride standing up?!

Those parts will toughen up in no time with consistant riding.

I had a pretty good 10K today.  I really worked on changing my thought process.  I remember when I ran the Country Music 1/2 Marathon.  Everyone said afterwards that this had been the most fun race they had ever ran.  All I could think at the time was I don't remember a really fun moment in the entire race.  It was all really hard work.  I want to change that.

Agreed.  They'll get use to it.  Just takes a little bit of time.  Unfortunately, it can be pretty painful in the process.

I understand how that goes.  Sometimes it's easy to get way too inside of your head and then you can't relax and have a good race.  Working on the mental aspects can be just as important!

Need some advice.  I am thinking of doing a 40+ mile ride next week.  I have done a 30 and will do a 30+ this week.  I am wondering if jumping up to 40+ plus next week is too much or just stop talking and do it. I don't plan to push the pace to hard, but just wondering what you all think

If you've done over 30, I think you should be ok for 40.  It's a lot easier to make big jumps in cycling than in running.  If you use an easier pace, I think you can do it.

You might have to stop to refill your bottles, so make sure there is a gas station or something along your route where you can do this.

good point on the water, there isn't an easy gas station but I will ride with a pack with extra water in it.

Good plan.  Anything more than 30 miles and I usually have to refill.  Parks are also good options lots of times.  They usually have a place to fill bottles.

Pretty excited I found a sweet multi use trail that is about 6 miles long and paved.  The best part is that during the week very few people are on it.  Means I can hook the baby trailer up and get biking in easier when my wife is working.  Not only that it is in a nice wooded area so great scenery to see.  I will have to do several laps to get a work out in but that is ok.  The trail also has lots of rollers in it so I will get a decent work out in.

Rode the new part of the route I will use on my 40 mile ride next week.  Ended up going 33 miles today.  Real slow pace as the person I was riding with is just coming back from a achilles injury.  She thinks I am nuts as I have choose the route with the most hills in it.  Good ride.  Jen you are right about the water.  I am thinking of stopping and getting a second cage put on my bike which should help out with the water issues.

Not sure how much water you will eventually need, but a camelback is great for long rides.

That's another option.  They drive me crazy because my back gets really warm, but I know a lot of people really like them.  I would start with the second cage - should be a pretty cheap option to carry more water.

They drive me crazy too, but on a really hot day I know I will drink enough if I have one.  I found that it I drop a couple of small freezer packs around the bladder, the water will stay cool to drink as well as not make my back so hot.

A camelback is great idea.  I will have to start to look for one.  The only thing I wonder is about being able to suck water out of it while riding.  normally  I squeeze the water out of the bottle so it saves effort.   I guess it can't be worse than trying to chew and shallow without running out of air.

My second tri is coming up this weekend.  Getting excited.  Going to do an easy ride with my little girl tomorrow, do a short easy swim on sat. and rock it out on Sunday.

So here's my new dilemma - if I'm not following a training plan, and am only working on two of the three sports (biking and running), how often do I need to do each one?

In June, I did a running challenge and worked on my running a lot. By the end I felt like I'd improved quite a bit; much more consistent and much less painful. So this month, I signed up for the TdF bike challenge, and bought a new bike. It turns out, I love to ride my bike. The problem is, I just looked at my training log and realized I haven't run since July 1st.

Clearly, that's not often enough, and I need to start doing them both at the same time. I'm pretty sure that doing one sport a month won't get me very far! So how often should I be planning on for each one? Twice a week? Three times a week?

Anybody have thoughts?

The link to my race is above.  I still don't know how to do that correctly.  I had a great race today.  End up get a PR for sprint distance with an overall time of 1:29:12, even though this course was 2 miles longer on the bike, 150 yards longer on the swim and an extra .1 miles to run over my first race.  I stuck to my plan for the swim and swam my own pace.  The crazy thing is that I passed over half of my wave and finished at the lead of the average slow swimmer group (at least that is what I am calling them.)  My bike was awesome.  Averaged 19.2 mph, and pretty much only got caught by people on tri bikes.  I even managed to hang with a few people on the tri bikes.  Then on the run I averaged sub 9 minute miles, like 8.92 minutes/mile, but it is still below 9.  I am so stoked right now.  That's right I went old school.  This result is probly the best I could do with where I am at in my training, so if you can't tell I am really, really happy.
Thanks for all the support.

I would try for at least two per week, but three (especially of running) each week would be better.  You also want to schedule a rest day in there.  Maybe a sample could be something like this (2x per week of swimming, biking, running):

Monday - swim
Tuesday - run
Wednesday - swim
Thursday - bike
Friday - rest day!
Saturday - long run
Sunday - long bike

Obviously, you could switch the days around and do multiple workouts per day.  Setting something simple like this would help give you a very basic plan.

Does that help at all?
