jtaddei - 2009-07-29 12:24 PM my wife told me that if I want her to go to the race on friday that I need to do some laundry for her (she's working a lot of hours).

I dunno if she was giving me an out or just making things difficult for me.

edit: Brad - I'm planning on playing a lot of things by ear as well.  I'll probably try to make the dinner, and if we haven't decided on a place by thursday night i'll PM my cell # to some folks in the know so that we can come.  I wanted to make a Beginnertriathlete.com poster but i'm not sure what i'd do with it.
Maybe she was giving herself an out. ha ha I doubt that I will swim friday, but might jump off the pieer to experience that before the big day. The main reason I dont want to swim is that I've already pakced my wetsuit, and dont want to mess with getting it dried. yeah, its an excuse. I think it would be cool to get with some of you for a drive around the course and/or just to BS some. The only definite thing I have to do is attend a training session for the GPS tracking device I will wear Saturday so family and friends can follow me. Thats at 2pm. Oh yeah, and I'm not getting any work done so decided to take tomorrow off as well. haha Curt

jumping off the pier is pretty fun but do be aware that they are doing a beach start this year.

Well then, I guess there is no reason to jump off the Pier. I just assumed it was a pier start because of some videos Ive seen on youtube.com.

Thanks..

don't get me wrong jumping off the pier is pretty fun to do, because of the beach start it may not be worth doing to just get out and jump, but if you're going to try to swim the course i'd really recommend jumping off the pier and swimming north to jean klock park (if the current is going that way).

Crikey!  This thread really exploded in the last few days...I should be checking in more regularly, I guess!  Me and my husband Eric will be there sometime on Friday to join in some combination of activities.

I'm excited that the weather is looking good so far...when we did it in 2007, all I remember was that the run was super hot!

I'm #655, wave 7 and he's #1671, wave 14.  Looking forward to meeting some of you there!

Brad had posted a tentative schedule earlier, but I'm not sure if anyone is going to be doing that or not.  At the very least, I need to take a car ride around the bike course.  I'd like to at least see the roads once before biking them.  If anyone would like to come along, either post or PM me and we can exchange numbers and set up a time.  Maybe what we could do is ride the course then head over to the expo to check in and catch one of the pre-race meetings.

Do we have anyone who is the "Master of the Phone Numbers"? Or better yet, the email addresses of the phones, that a quick email can be sent to the group before one of the get togethers?

Alright, seems like there is interest again. I was a little worried there would be a bunch of waiting around and no one really knowing what was going on. I didn't want anyone to feel rushed because they had to meet up with others.

Why don't we stick to the original plan, with a swim, drive, expo and dinner. If you feel like going to any of them great, if you don't show, no worries.

I've got a list going with cell numbers. PM yours to me if you want to be included. On Thursday night, I'll send a text out to everyone with all the numbers on it. If you feel like heading out for a swim or drive, or expo......, text the group. That way, everyone knows, but no one will be waiting for people who may or may not show.

If you send a text out, give details about where exactly you are. Sound like a plan? Sorry for the confusion, I'm going a little crazy because of this race.

I think this will work, right?

i've completely cut caffeine and alcohol out of my diet for all of july.

I had two beers mid month because I was at a beer / bike festival... how do I pass up my 2 favorite things combined?

This way race day the caffeine will hit me like a swift tail wind and the alcohol will hit me like a ton of bricks that following night.

Lowering your caffeine tolerance has been shown to offer performance enhancing effects.  So when coffee heads like myself stop taking it for a month or so your body gets used to not having it and that way race day you feel the effects much more.

I see cutting it out for a month or 2 but only 8 days seems like the worst of both worlds, your body will be in withdrawal.  I tend to cut way back on pop but never completely!

i've learned to love fresca this month.  Best diet / caffeine free soda you can buy.

I actually got to a point where I considered buying non-alcoholic beer to just get myself over the craving but I resisted.

p.s. If you're giving up alcohol for any period of time don't watch any episodes of Mad Men.  Watching that show makes me want to drink so bad.

I haven't had any since about 7/17, and yes, I am dying for a venti iced coffee 4 shots 1 splenda and a splash of non-fat. No sodas, no coffee, etc.

Race morning, I'll be waking up with a cup of joe, and I have espresso love Gu Gels (leaded) for the bike.

I've actually broken the addiction cycle of caffeine for me, I may actually try to somewhat limit my caffine intake afterwards again.

There was a recent study ( as well as tons of others ) that gathered data from 100 studies as well as their own, showing that abstinense (sp) from Caffeine for 7 full days yielded a 4% power gain. But the amount of caffeine needed to do so is 200+ I believe. Which is basically a good pre race drink ( EFS Pre Race for example).

As I drink a lot of coffee simply for the sheer pleasure of sitting down to a french press of Yergacheffe not really for the caffeine side of things.

So I guess to shorten it up, its to benefit from the caffeine more.

Check out Tritalk.com his recent podcast goes over that exact study in more depth

I'm not sure exactly how long it will take us to get there.  Probably mid-afternoon.

last minute housecleaning question.  My wetsuit rental caused me awful chafing on my left under arm (my strong side) making both my swim and bike unpleasant.  I wasn't swimming with my tri top on and I wonder if that will make the difference.

I've never used body glide before but do you think if I put that on before the swim it would help my under arm not get as chafed?

I'm running to the local tri store to pick up some super last minute things tomorrow:  Extra CO2 (practice with my new pump), race belt, and possibly body glide.

What else could I be forgetting?

Won't promise that Body Glide will solve the issue but it will help. I suggest that you put it around your neck/arms/legs. The arms/legs are mostly for getting the suit off easier but also to prevent your chaffing. With a wetsuit you want to make sure of two things: 1) there is no extra room in your crotch. The legs can be short -- even mid-thigh but you got to get the suit all the way up. 2) When you raise your hands the suit is against your armpit. You should be able to push the suit at the arm pit and have no extra material. For me that leaves some extra material in the back along the zipper, that's fine that's where the extra material belongs. As with the legs this may mean that the suit doesn't cover all of your arm.Don't know if this helps or not, I know my last OWS I did I gave a perfect example of how NOT to put a suit on. Took a long time to fix, I should've taken it off and started over.Good luck to all, I'll be the one saying 'great run, you look strong' as you pass me!--Sax

jtaddei - 2009-07-29 12:24 PM my wife told me that if I want her to go to the race on friday that I need to do some laundry for her (she's working a lot of hours).

I wanted to make a Beginnertriathlete.com poster but i'm not sure what i'd do with it.

is that all?  My wife isn't coming but I had to paint the basement yesterday just to go to the race myself and stay out of the doghouse.

I cant believe how "whipped" all you guys are. Why dont you just tell the wife, that this is a very important race, and it can wait until after this weekend?

Hey guys, I better get going, I need to finish cutting the grass, and putting away the dishes so I can meet up with all you fine people tomorrow. ha ha
