Here are some links to ride data from different places and I think it say the ascent is over 7000 ft.

I would love to be wrong, but for right now my training is geared towards that sort of bike ride.

The run course still has construction at the top of Observatory Hill - they caged the area off on the road, so, there are two choices -

1). Run "off-road" along the other side of the curb for the .1 mile or so, but be careful.
2). Take the sidewalk detour (I haven't done that yet).

I took the sidewalk detour, it was ok, just have to weave through the pedestrians. Oh, and the hill I walked wasn't Observatory, it was the steep hill I took to get from the lake path to Observatory. I missed Babcock so I have no idea what it was, but it was steep!

IMLP is less than 7000' and those hills are huge! I remember hashing this out before IMWI in 2007 and I was nervous until I got out and drove one loop of the course and got 2200' on my altimeter. WHen I route tracked it on BT I came out with 4400' and on race day my Polar had 4300'. All those seemed to be consistent with the hills I ride around here in upstate NY. It is what it is, but it's not a "killer" ride and IMHO there is no way it's 7000' of climbing!

I know some people that used a Garmin came out with over 10,000' and I believe motionbased.com uses satellite data which is not accurate for elevation data.

I just rode the course yesterday for the first time and also rode Lake Placid last week. I think it's by far more challenging than Lake Placid, even though LP has a couple super long climbs, but I agree it isn't "killer." I thought it was really fun actually, but can see how training on long, flat stretches could set you up for a big challenge on race day. I've been hill training (including the trip to LP) for HHH and MOO so I feel well set up. I won't be fast but I'll have a good time!

After riding the Horribly Hilly Hundreds ride in the area I have to agree.  They could have made the MOO course a LOT worse.

Hey guys, I'm considering doing this race in 2010.  I'm just wondering  how difficult it is (was) to get into?  How long did it take to sell out last year?  Did you register on-line or on-site?

I think this is one of the best IM's out there and will most likely sell out on site. The economy may play a part in how fast it sells out but I kind of doubt it.

I was mistaken, when I route tracked it on BT I came up with 3786'. Here is the course I tracked IMWI . The biggest hill is 367' and if you look at all the peaks and estimate there is no way of coming up with more than 5000'. I have come to trust my altimeter and my Polar and both came up with 4300' and change. IMKY was about the same as far as total climbing but there weren't nearly as many breaks where you can recover on.

I flew out and volunteered and signed up in person. It made it online but I think only a couple hundred spots and sold out very quickly. However community fund spots are still open for this year so I think next year will be a different story.

Hi everyone,

I hope training is going well.  I need help from those of you with experience doing IM.  I'm burned out.  I'm to the point right now that every workout I do is a burden and I am fighting to just keep motivated to get out there.  Does anyone else feel like this?  I have tried taking days off but it just isn't helping.  Any ideas please!  We are getting so close and I am by no means throwing the towel in but I have a lot of work left to do.

I too was suffering from the Ironman blues. If you read my blog you will see I even said I might not do the race this year.  My family and my extended BT family would not let me do that. Having the access to talk to people who understand what you are going threw helps.  They know how much doing Ironman means to me.  I have raced in and completed 2 IMoo's and every year I get like this.  It comes and goes.  Takn a day or so away from the training sometimes helps.  Or if you need motivation I like watching Ironman races on Utube.  You will be fine.  And you will do this.  Keep up the great work.  Hope I helped.  Smile

I see you have a lot of stuff in your log/calendar, but no sprints. I'm not experienced (first IM), but I wonder if the short stuff will break up the monotony of long hours in the water/saddle/running but still benefit you with a somewhat decent training day. That, and sprints are really fun. You've got time to throw one in there before Door County. Just a thought. Good luck kicking the blues. I can't say I've had them yet.

Get yourself a foam roller pronto!!!  Roll out your IT band and anything that hurts around it.  It will help!  Or at least did for me!

X2 on the roller, use it daily. Start doing ITB stretches as well and do them 3x daily. Hold the stretch for 30 seconds and do it three times so it's effective. If you don't have acute ITBS or didn't cause any damage, you should be able to get back on track quickly with some preventative measures.

Rode the bike course today with bertgwen and Lazymarathoner.  Great day was had!

The course was marked with yellow and orange tape markings on the roads.  The markings point in the direction that you should go/turn.  / = turn to the right, and \ = turn to the left.  There were a couple of | (straight ahead) markings.  I thank the person(s) that put them out there for the other riders (since I know the course really well).

There is a new bridge in place now on Shady Oaks!!!  HOORAY!  No more detour!

See you soon, peeps.

Take the advice from Lazy and Crea and stretch and foam roll (or use a TP massage ball) the living hades out of your IT band. Do not be afraid to inflict some pain by getting deep with the roller or ball. I've dealt with your issue the last 3 years in training for long course stuff, and you can train through it if you take the time to, pre and post-run, stretch and roll. Just Google IT band stretches for some good ones.

Good luck, I know how it feels.  I have chronic ITBS problems and have worked with a PT to come up with a stretch and release program so that I can be doing something as crazy as Ironman.  Give it a little time, but do what someone else said and inflict a little pain on yourself.  A little bit of pain will make it feel a lot better later!

I'm going to go a different direction than the roller and stretching based on my experience with ITBS myself.

A brief history - in 2007, training for my first IM, I was having some lateral knee pain after a lot of my runs. I went to a PT and he determined it was my ITB and did some ultrasound, stretching and foam roller stuff and after a couple weeks of not improving any I spoke to a radiologist I work with who is an avid marathoner.

He explained that the foam roller, stretching, ice, etc is all good for a healthy ITB that has some minor inflammation from a hard run or workout. If your ITB is actually damaged to where you are feeling it on every run or it's limiting your ability to perform then REST IS THE ONLY THING THAT WILL HELP. Muscles, tendons and ligaments repair themselves by the body increasing the blood flow to the affected area. (The body is very good at repairing itself if you can let it do it's job!) Ice decreases blood flow and therefore inhibits the body from healing. Stretching or using a foam roller on an injured ITB only irritates the tissue that the body is trying to repair. REST allows the body to mend the ITB so you can go play again.

After 2 weeks of a lot more biking he told me to go for a short run. If I didn't feel any pain after a mile or two finish a short run and start to build up from there. If I felt any pain in the ITB at all after a mile or two then stop and take another week off from running.

It sounds like a lot but I didn't have any pain after the two weeks and have had absolutely no ITB problems since.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

I told him "tomorrow is my rest day, will that be enough?" He had me take 2 weeks COMPLETELY OFF RUNNING but said that if biking doesn't bother it, which it didn't at all, then increase your biking miles and swimming for 2 weeks.

I really have to disagree with the "little bit of pain" theory in this case. ITBS and Plantar Faciaitis are two injuries that have kept runners out for months or sometimes years if they try to "push through the pain"
