Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() wisewilma - 2009-02-22 6:17 PM What's been your biggest training surprises since joining Team Mo? I really have to agree with what GumbleX and the others are saying but I am not so much surprised as I am so inspired by the caliber of triathletes and soon-to-be triathletes in this group! Way to go, Team Mo! I have been pleasantly surprised by my own endurance and commitment level. The fact that I am getting stronger, going longer and can do a brick workout without passing out. LOL! |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Team Mo! I am looking for some advice...I have just signed up for some triathlon specific swimming lessons. I'm so happy about this. This company I signed up with is so popular that I called on their first day of registration and got a busy signal for over 2 hours. Can I get some ideas from you all, as to what i should be expecting? Also, would love to hear some feedback about your own experiences, if you have ever had lessons. Thanks! RGR |

Can I get some ideas from you all, as to what i should be expecting? Also, would love to hear some feedback about your own experiences, if you have ever had lessons. Thanks! RGR Well K, I've never attended a swim clinic before... So my expectation advice is limited.. but as a triathlete i can tell you what i hope you should learn.. 1. triathlon swimming is different than regular swimming.. The big thing for us is efficiency.. really long strokes, minimal kicking.. making sure you stay long in the water.. so if you are 5'10 swim like you are 6'-0. 2. would be sighting.. when swimming in open water sighting is very important. sighting helps stay on course, and also keep an eye on what directly in front of you.. essential 3. teach how to stay calm in a mass start.. its a malay people will swim over you and kick you.. 4. recover strokes are important. This is stuff i would hope that you would learn.. some stuff i can tell how to do.. i still can offer some advice in this area.. stuff i do in the pool. have fun, learn alot mo Edited by momo 2009-02-23 12:22 PM |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() RGR..please share your learnings from the swim clinic....I'm struggling trying to self coach learning the totat immersion swim technique but it makes alot of sense. It says 70% of your swim success comes from technique not physical endurance. They focus on swimming on your side, swimming long, keeping your head hidden, etc. |

I admire you for self-coaching, it is tough but this is why you are on Team Mo! and I think that Mo might have some good swimming advice for you. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Didn't mean to scare anyone... I'm a self taught swimmer as well.. Mass starts are crazy at times.. most times in small races you start in heats.. elite, age group, masters, etc.. it cool to start in the rear.. there will be people that will fly and never look back and then there are those that you will see again.. The main thing is to stay calm and swim your race.. the front of the pack can be pretty brutal.. you can't see what's in front of you. that's why its important to practice sighting in the pool.. so it will feel somewhat natural when you get in open water.. recovery strokes are essential.. if you go out to fast or off your normal pace, you will tire quickly.. so a recovery stroke is rolling over on your back for a little while.. it is very simple.. so while swimming in the pool, whatever arm is straight when breathing.. stretch it out as far as you can.. while doing this 180 onto your back.. make sure you keep your chest high.. take some deep yoga breathes (in through the nose out through the mouth.) you will be pretty buoyant in the wetsuit will be a lot easier.. kick easy... propulsion is through the hips when swimming.. so when you ready to flip back over... take a nice inhale through the nose, stretch breathing arm out an proceed to roll back over.. i will feel odd in the beginning but practice practice practice... tips: 1. if you know people that swim... get them to swim in a lane with you, bump into one another.. so you will learn how to recover and not panic if it happened in a race. another thing to do is swim three in a lane.. this helps too.. 2. i do this here and there.. in the pool swim with your eyes close.. this helps you get use to not seeing anything in open water.. open your eyes when breathing.. (sighting=> take your breathing arm push it out in front of you, and then lift your head) substitute this with a breathing stroke.. do it every other stroke. 3. when swimming.. keep hands low... to help with this do finger tip drills.. when your hand come out of the water drag your fingers across the water (fingers should be submerged to the first joint.. 4. staying long is also very important.. this creates efficiency.. to help with this.. do catch up drills.. this is simple... don't bring your breathing arm back until the other is beside it.. this is how you learn to be slick and glide in the water.. im sure im making it sound easy.. you will know when you did it right.. it will feel awesome.. to get an idea of where you are.. count your strokes (or get someone else to count them for you) take that number.. try to reduce by 2 strokes. start small until you get the feel. hope this helps a little.. if you need clarity.. i may have to take a camera to the pool an take some photos.. of myself and some friends to help understand. i do have some news though.. i leave for finland on march 7 and will be gone until the 20th(work).. so, i will be in and out on the site checking up on you.. but i will be checking up. no slacking off. haha.. i have one day to adjust back to life when i get home.. because i have a race to run on sun morning.. sucks for me.. Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Enjoy Finland and don't forget your coat! I second all the things that have been said about swimming. I was self-teaching myself. Participated in a swim clinic and learned a lot of great swimming techniques/drills that have really helped (as long as I practice on a regular basis). My clinica was no a TI clinic but utilized many of the same drills and the biggest thing I learned was how swim with efficiency vs "fighting" the water. Sighting drills were also very helpful, but takes a little time to get the coordination right. Have fun and relax, the key won't be the clinic but applying the tools as you swim everyday. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was snuggled up in my flannel sheets this morning appreciating how wonderfully warm my electric blanket is... almost skipped my workout. But thoughts of Team Mo, how hard you all are training and how encouraging everyone is... I got up and got it done. Thank you for the inspiration! |

New user ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wilma I totally saw what you were doing and followed your lead. This mornig a little before 5 my alarm went off so I draged my lazy booty out of beed (all nice and cozy!) into the cold bathroom and got ready to run at the gym! Thanks for the inspiration. Team mo I would like the chance to tell you all how wonderful you are. You have all encouraged me to keep working to become a triathlete even when I have wanted to quit because I am slow or not as good as someone else. You all are truly amazing!!! Thank You. |

I'm with you on all counts. Those sheets are nice & toasty in the a.m., but I never regret having done a workout once I've finished. There is no way I would be where I am without Team Mo. For me, whenever self-doubt starts to creep in I think of your Nike quote, RGR's, and Mo's quote. It also helps to know you're all cheering me on in spirit. We can do this! |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Awesome numbers Mo! February: I'll hit/surpass my goals in run & bike. Couldn't swim for 2 weeks b/c of unexpected minor surgery on my face (friggin' ow!), but I'm doing pretty well in the pool now. I've kept up the regular strength training & yoga and have been lucky enough to get in some skiing. I'm most proud of the confidence I've gained and the increase in my endurance. It's been interesting to discover seemingly minor techniques that add so much to proficiency. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Mo, here are my totals for the month of February. The only part of the challenge, which I failed miserably at was the swim portion. I do have an easy run\bike planned for tomorrow but I doubt that they will make any major difference, seeing as I already have my met my goals in those two disciplines. <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin-top:0cm; mso-para-margin-right:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:10.0pt; mso-para-margin-left:0cm; line-height:115%; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:11.0pt; font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast; mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;} Bike: 4h 25m - 89.05 Mi Run: 7h 36m 25s - 36.21 Mi Swim: 2h 14m - 4099 Yd = half of what I should have done Strength: 4h 25m Crossfit: 30m Massage: 2h 05m Soccer: 8h 40m = soccer crazy
