my first tri is going to be the TriZou here at the university of missouri on may 3. mostly just worried about finishing the swim. its an indoor snake style swim with individual starts spaced 10-12 seconds apart and hoping i pick the right pace to jump in at. ive been looking and practicing parts of the bike course and cant do it all because its on busiest streets of the city.

imsmith, my first tri is Saturday and it's a snake-style swim as well. When I went to register at setupevents, they asked for a 100m swim time and that's how they place you. I just put down 3:00 to start so I could register, but when back twice to edit it to a more specific time. They say to time a 500m swim (or 500y depending on the pool), then divide that time by 5 for your 100m pace. Try that and you should be placed pretty well. The problem is, as a friend who raced last year told me, that some people just drop in a time and they're in the wrong wave, but they won't move to be passed, even at the corners. So check on pool race etiquette and rules so if you get a tap on the foot you know the swimmer behind you wants around (or if you need to tap a swimmer).

 Have a good race!

Well my season has just ended before it actually got started.....  I have a horizontal tear of the meniscus, and a osteochondral lesion of the femur.

My surgery plan will be to repair the torn meniscus, and then to do micro-fracture surgery on my femur where the lesion is..  Micro-fracture surgery is the same surgery that Tiger Woods just had.. so maybe just maybe my golf game will improve!.. Seems like a lot of pro athletes are now having this type of surgery so I trust that it will fix my knee as well.

Looks like recovery and getting back to running low mileage will be a good possibility if everything goes well.  Much better news than I heard from the 2 other surgeons that I first visited. In fact once the wounds heel (2 weeks or so)  spinning on the bike and swimming will be fine.. even though I am to stay on crutches for 6 weeks b/c of weight bearing restraints.  If all goes well, light jogging can begin in the 4 month or so range.  Although I know now that I will never get to complete an IM or HIM or even Olympic (the pounding from longer distance run training would not be advised)... it does allow me to focus strictly on the Sprint Distance... and will allow me to focus entirely on speed at the short distance in the future.

Who know a November sprint tri may just be in the cards if all goes well...

Man, that stinks about the knee and pulling you out of tri's. I hope you can get a sprint in this fall. Focus on getting a good surgeon, having good recovery and healing right. Who knows? Maybe we'll see you in some endurance cycling and swimming events.

Man that sucks on the knee problems!  I guess at least you can relax and enjoy the beginning of summer with no agenda other than recovery.

I had my first real taste of summer this weekend...got to head to Charleston, SC for a long weekend at the beach while my wife ran the gi-normous 10k down there (31,000+ finishers).  75 degrees and beautiful weather.  Besides a 25 mile bike ride, the only training I got in was 12oz Corona curls!

Crue!!~
that sucks about your knee. I'm still in PT for mine, although I didn't need surgery.
Here is wishing you well on your recovery and hoping it is speedy. GRRR ...that just stinks.

Jonathan,

I know you are a fan of De Soto tri stuff.  Do you have a preference for tri shorts?  They make the Forza and the Carrera line.  I don't really know what I am looking for and the two lines have about a $25 difference.

I also read that the Forza is "great for non-wet suit races".  Does that mean it is no good for under a wet-suit?

Thanks.

I wear the Forza tri shorts with 4 pockets but I wear the Carrera tri jersey.  The only reason I choose the Forza in tri shorts is becuase it has the 4 pockets.  They are awesome.

The Carrera stuff is good.

All of their stuff can be worn under a wetsuit.

^^ Thanks!  I have to go try on a few pairs this week since I am smack in between the M and L according to my waist size (32").  I hate when I fall on the line as I end up paying full retail cause I have to buy them in store :-(  Never a sale when I need it.

Go with the M.  I am anywhere between a 32 waist and a 30 waist given how hard I am training and the M fits fine.  They also stretch a bit over time.

Great...just ordered a pair from Trisports using the 15% and free shipping.  Saved me $28 for the top and bottom!  At worst, I have to just send them back for a large.

I ended up doing that exact same thing.  I contacted desoto about which size they recommended for their wetsuits and clothing.  I then found a great deal on the black pearl and their recommendation was correct.  Unfortunately the clothing was just a bit too big.  Ended up ordering a size smaller and sending the first set back.  I have to agree that they are very comfortable, the first race test is in 3 weeks.....

Anyone racing this weekend?

I have a half marathon in Charlotte Saturday and looking forward to taking a nice break from the long runs and concentrate on 5-10k speed for the summer!

Hoping to PR the race saturday but this course is much hillier than the one I did in December so it will be a challenge.  I am borrowing a Garmin to help me pace so I don't start out too fast.  My legs are feeling good...almost too good for a half mary though!

Funny, I just ordered a Carrera jersey yesterday myself...

Jonathan (or anyone else), you ever wear the 2XU shorts?  I have a pair of the elites a couple pair of the comps and like them, but have never worn other Tri shorts so have no comparison.  I'm thinking of getting another two pair soon to throw into the rotation but am a little risk averse on trying something new....

This "hobby" gets to your wallet.  I just went down to a tri shop and next thing I know I'm buying a Castelli bike jersey, arm warmers and some vision aero bars for the road bike.  Bought a wetsuit a couple weeks ago (used at least), I bike earlier this year and about 500 bucks in training clothing.  Anyone eles get a little gear crazy now that it's getting warmer and the seasom is coming up?

I hear ya about the gear.  I already had my road bike so that was a big purchase I could avoid this year.  (Although looking at all them tri bikes I really would love to jump in a purchase one, but I decided to complete this first year and see how much I like it.)  Of what I did purchase up to now for the season....  T1 Black Pearl Wetsuit, race uni, swim jammer, fins, pull bouy, 2 googles, swim caps, race belt, yankz/ lock laces, running shoes, gold club membership on BT

Registered for 4 races already, one to save on early registration and most importantly, to stay motivated. 2 sprints and 2 olympics.

Upcoming purchases....  Profile design clip-on aerobars, tri bike shoes (I need a new pair of shoes and probably going to get an entry level LG shoe that would be used on races and a few training rides.)

I am sure I missed a few things, but there it is for now.

Never worn 2XU stuff.

WRT cost, I buy lots of stuff on sale, used off ebay or on sale at Performance.  Yes, it is an expensive sport.

Have a great race this weekend.

No race for me this weekend, but a week from tomorrow is the first tri of the season.  And I'm very much looking forward to that.

I might be getting dragged into a 5k Sunday.  We'll see.  I was just told about it.  I haven't been focusing on running at all so maybe it would be good to get my arse in gear once I race it and realize how bad I run.  I've been getting shin splints and just ordered some compression shin guards and hope it helps a little.

Other than that, if I had it my way there'd be a nice little bike race or something every other weekend because I'm quickly realizing that is my favorite of the 3 sports right now.  I through some vision mini-TT aero bars on the roadie this morning and am amped up to ride while the weather is nice in New England.

Good luck in your race!

I am a hurtin for certain from my half marathon this morning but I was able to PR in 1:34:25 (a 2+ minute decrease from December).  Course was non stop hills, all of which seemed uphill.  Finished 59th overall and 9th for my AG.  The dude that won (a local) ran a 1:06 (5:09/mile).  Yowssers!  Must be nice to be a 25 again!

Beer + 13.1 = Naptime for me!

Came so close to nailing on of my goals this morning.

I have a goal of sub 1:30/100m swim pace.  This morning I did my final 400 in 6:03.  So close.  Maybe a few more months.

Brian congrats on you HM. What a great finish time!

Jonathan that's awesome on your swim time too. Why does it seem so hard to shave time off the swim? I have a friend here who trains and she has hit a plateau w/ her swim time and said shaving time off the swim is a challenge.  Does it all boil down to form?

I finally signed up for a 'stroke and efficiency' clinic and start this week.

Hey Brian - great time on the Half Mary!!!!  Wish I was fast like you!!  I did 18 miles today and did the 13.1 in 1:58.  I was trying to use today's run as a dry run for the Mary on 5/17.  Unfortunately, I think the effects of travelling last week coupled with a bit of undernourishment made me bonk at mile 17.  The plan was to run 20.  I've never felt so bad after a run.  Hopefully next week is better.  It's making me question the race which is only a month away.  If that happens, I'm sunk.  There would have been no finishing 26.2 today.

Holly - I have been taking a Tri swim class for about 2 months and it has helped tremendously.  I think you'll be happy you're doing the clinic.

You mind if I borrow your gills sometime?!?!

Swim question:  How much does your pace change from shorter lengths to longer lengths?

Right now I am "Steady Eddie".  My 300yd average from last week is almost identical to my 1000yd average from todays workout (both are about 1:57/100).   I am in week 5 of the 6 week 0-1650 plan so my main focus right now is stamina but when this program is over, how much quicker do you do, lets say a 300yd vs a 600yd?  Just a little bit faster, 10 seconds faster, etc?

Thanks!
