Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Training and racing with heart rate zones allows you to see how hard you are or aren't pushing yourself. Keeps you in check. If you know what your zones are, you know where you should be during various distances of triathlon. Longer distance (ironman) = zone 2 heart rate, Olympic and Sprint (z4 - OUCH) etc. Keeps you honest and makes you push yourself to your full potential (or keeps you from not pushing too hard and blowing up on the run). |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm volunteering with a workgroup at church tomorrow rehabing a house. I'll probably be on the roof! After that, I'm hoping to get in a quick swim or a 3 or 4 mile run. Hopefully I'll get out for a ride on Sunday. Matt |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 1500 yard swim and 12-15 mile bike Sat, 4.4 run sunday. Next tri 6/21. Still keeping the goal time of 1:35:30. If I can remove the issues from my first tri, I think this is a realistic goal. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Planned a 7.5 mile run today but ended up just under 7. I remembered the route being longer than it was. Oh, well. Tomorrow is a 30 mile bike ride. That will be my longest ever! Hope everyone is having a good weekend. George |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello all-hope everyone had a good weekend. Finished my first 10 hour training week. Feel good but will be traveling a good bit the next 2 weeks so will probably have limited bike and swim opportunities and hours will drop. Did my first 50 mile plus ride yesterday and still felt pretty good on run today. Have some 10+ hour weeks scheduled in August as I prepare for my first Oly distance in Sept. Found a neat tool on the web at www.enduranceplanner.com Has a free trial you can demo and I have been doing that the last few days. Lots of training plans, workouts and very interactive training program/log feature. Variety of good workouts for swim, bike and run for sprint, oly, etc.. I really like it and plan on using one of the olympic plans to get ready for my next tri. I am not affiliated in any way with the site but found it to be pretty comprehensive for what the cost is should you subscribe. Finally, I cant seem to get photo from my first tri to download to BT site to use as my identifier photo. Can someone step me through it. I have looked at the instructions here on BT but still cant do it. I am a tech moron so all help appreciated. Have a good week. Randy |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Question for all. Planning my first half marathon in October and am looking at a 16 week run plan I got off of runner's world. Would it be ok to use the half run plan in my run days during my training for the planned tri's I have through Sept? As the long run days build up could this potentially hurt my tri training and performance? My current race schedule consists of all sprints with a potential olypmic to end the tri season (although this is at the same location as my first tri and I'm thinking about repeating it as a sprint to gauge my progression, and to beat the course that beat me up a few weeks ago!). Just curious to you thoughts and insight. Thanks for all the help and words of encouragement so far. Adam |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just for information purposes. This is also a great family location, especially if you want to turn a triathlon ito a family vacation! this might be a great spot to get in an IM race: http://www.rev3tri.com/!/blog/2009-06-12-cedarPoint.html 30 miles from my house, my actual goal training ride this summer is a 60 mile trip to Cedar Point and back. Anyone curious please ask, I love Cedar Point and can offer a lot of information about the city and area and all they have to offer. I would love to do this, but might not be ready for it, though I will have 9 months to train for, any thoughts? Adam |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I feel like I have been away forever. So much has been going on that I couldn't come on to log what little I have been doing. I have been keeping track of everyone - and congrats to everyone. I have been having some ups and downs in training - literatly and figuratively. This past weekend I went up north for the day to do a trial run of the bike and run course where I will be racing in 3 weeks. Seems like a decent course. On Monday I climbed Park hill aka "The beast" . It is a big hill up the escarpment - and I conquered it. I am slowly getting over my fear of hills and being clipped in. I finally got in the pool on Monday after probably not swimming for atelast a month. Not the time to stop swimming when my races are coming up. I have my first race of the season on the 29th and I still have not tried out my wetsuit yet. My plan is to do it Friday but the weather may not cooperate. I may go for a swim in the rain - as long as there is no thunder. I am running out of time. This weekend I have a 10km race. That might be another race in the rain. Hope everything is going well with everyone. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My training has trailed off a bit too. Between life and work, there really hasn't been much time. I have a sprint this saturday, and it's probably going to be my last race for a while. The only other definite race is my 1/2 marathon in September. I'll do some 5k's and 10k's here and there if they pop up, but I'm not planning on anymore tri's this summer as I don't see my training time increasing much over the summer. But if an interesting race pops up and it's not too far from home.... Matt |

|
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The longest run is 12 miles and it pretty much corresponds with the last tri of my season Sept 17th or so. Even though the plan calls for long runs each week, the week leading into my tri's, I will be cutting the long run back and pick up the distance in the week following the tri. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ok, I've finally caught up to you and had my first tri of the season last weekend. Race report: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp... style="text-align: left;">The shocking thing was I placed in my age group for the first time. Actually placed first in my age group field of 14. Here I was whining about not getting my training in the last 2 weeks, determined to have fun, and look what happens? Actually the night before the race I met some friends of friends that had a 3 month old baby in NICU (born 3 months prematurely). I got to see this wonderful baby, such a fighter, yet 1 more month to go before the baby can go home to his family. It was just the dose of reality I needed before doing my tri. They didn't post race results until Monday night. So here I was checking Linmark and called to my husband, "come here, come here, check if I've made a mistake . . . did I really place in my age group, wait, wait, did I place first in my age group?" Once he confirmed, I bored him with a story about my high school swimming career -- how hard I worked for my personal best, yet modest results over 4 years. I never placed in any sport but that never kept me from giving it my all in many sports. In gym class, I was always picked last or next to last for a team. Revenge is sweet. Or maybe revenge is stupid because with the gidiness, I signed up for the Philadelphia Distance Run (Half Marathon) the next morning. |

I would say make your longest run before the last tri be around 8 miles, do the tri, then go up to 10 miles, two weeks prior to the half. |

I'm registered for PDR too. Where do you live? I'm in West Chester in lovely Chester County... (BTW - that lovely isn't sarcasm - I wouldn't leave this area for almost anything - I LOVE my little borough!). Matt |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Excellent job, I could only dream of performance like that at this point. Second tri for me coming up this Sunday, flat course so hope I can achieve my goal. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm in Princeton Junction, NJ. I did the Philly half almost 15 years ago. I'm looking to avenge the painful (painful for my ego) half I did in NYC in May. I'm really not much into distance, just into revenge. A friend did the duathlon last weekend at Harriman. I asked her, " do you hate swimming so much that you'd rather run twice?"

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well my second ever tri is done! I'll put together a RR and post it soon. Quick summary - it went 1000 times better than the first! Swim was no problem at all. No hyperventilating, no panic attacs and the only time I did the breast stroke was when I needed to slow down to let the traffic go around the buoy's. Bike was flat and fast, and I did manage to hold back a little to save something for the run - something I didn't do last time. Avg speed was around 19 mph. Run was a little longer than advertised. My garmin showed 3.28 miles, but I ran well averaging an 8:42 min/mile. Not great for some, but I finished the run in 27:40, and my 5K pr is 25:40, so I'm happy with my run. Unofficial time was 1:18. PLUS, the rain held out until I was just finishing the race, so I was really happy about that. The cool rain water felt GREAT with my Gatorade and bananas! Matt |
