Question for those who know:
How much hydration(if any), and when, during a sprint tri (440y, 13.1m, 3.1m)?

Thanks,
steve

Hydration/nutrition issues are highly variable and best sorted out in training. Some people will do that distance with nothing, others with water only, and a few will probably take in calories on the bike at least.

A lot depends on how long it takes to cover the distance. The first finishers will be in around one hour. Some will be out there for close to three hours.

I would just look at what you've found works for you on training days of duration similar to what you think it will take to cover the distance and start there.

The problem is that i never hydrate while training.  so i don't know if i need it or not.  i don't feel the urge to drink water while racing.  maybe a little thirsty while training.  i'm in florida where it's hot and humid.

Steve, I'm no expert on this stuff.  But I'm in Florida too, and for me it's different when I'm biking vs. running.  During training I try to "practice".  This is easy on the bike because I carry it with me.  But I don't usually carry anything when I'm running, and for long runs this is a problem that I haven't quite figured out.

For races, it really depends on the distance for me.  I run a lot of races, and I usually don't hydrate during the race (even for half marathons).  But as they say, don't try this at home!  And during short tris I usually do most of my hydration during transitions.

Maybe you should incorporate "practice" hydration into your training, and see what works for you?

If it works for you I wouldn't change anything. I feel like we tend to overthink the nutrition/hydration stuff for short course racing and training. Anything over 60-90 minutes and it becomes more of an issue.

It's funny I was thinking about this yesterday. I rode for just under two hours, somewhat light to moderate effort and I took in about 72 ounces of fluids and about 500 calories. When I got home I mowed my yards (moderate effort) for a little over an hour. I didn't drink anything, it was 90 degrees and 70% humidity. Of course I felt fine after both... and I didn't feel like my mowing performance feel off toward the end.

I still feel like it gets sorted out in training, even if that means you don't need much if anything.

I find I'm drinking less on the bike now than I did when I first started. I rarely drink more than 300-400ml in a 90 minute ride, and I don't even take fluid with me when I run. I do drink like a camel when I get back however. don't find that my performance suffers at all. I guess each to their own.

I have two water bottles that I take with me on my rides and in a 2 hour ride I can polish them both off, but we usually put up a good effort on the rides.  For a 5K run, I try to hydrate what I need before hand, and for a swim I usually end up drinking so much pool water working on my breathing it doesn't matter. Water, and 1 cup of coffee in the morning, is about all that I drink. I do however drink A LOT of water throughout the day. Over the years in the militray that is one thing they beat into us. When you are out humping in all your gear the last thing you want to worry about is H2O.

So what is everyone workout plans this weekend?

I got in a 32 mile ride this morning in 1:50.  Had some tough head winds.  Why does it always seem like the wind is always blowing in your face?

7.5 mile run this morning, 2 mile swim this afternoon.  Tomorrow is 70 minute bike and 2900 meter swim golf.

In regards to the swim: If you are doing a swim strictly to build endurance in the water, do you stop when you get fatigued and form starts to break down or do you push through and keep going?

Thanks!  I'm a little tired and we're going to go get something to eat, so I'll probably not get to the race report until tomorrow.  But I made my primary goal -- finishing!  And I smiled throughout the entire race, even when I was hating the swim (well, maybe not really...).  It was tough conditions today -- rough water for the swim, a headwind for about 20 miles, and mid-80s for the run.  So I'm thankful I was able to get through it.  More tomorrow, and thank you everyone for all of your wonderful inspires!

So how did everyone's week turn out?

Wheels kind of came off for me Friday. Between non-stop 12 and 15 hour days at work and a head/chest cold courtesy of my little ones, I'm forced into a rest day today even after abbreviated training the past two days.

On the bright side, my training plan didn't time out quite right for my A race as it were. Taking next week as a recovery week and starting my Base 2 phase over again a week from Monday it will time out better. I'll traveling to west Texas (Abilene) Thursday-Monday, so a recovery week works better with the timing there too. I can wrap it up with some good riding out there. They have actual hills.

Have a great week.

Guiness... man it's a shame I'm at work right now. LOVE Guiness.

It's been in the high 80s low 90s(F) here this past week. Send a little of the cold weather this way!

So how did everyone's week turn out?

Well, I wrapped a rest week last week and spent the better part of 20 hours yesterday getting back home from Germany. Managed some decent sleep on the flights (courtesy of an epic bender in Munich on Friday) and even slept a good 6 hours after getting in at 1100 last night. Continued rest today and starting to train again Monday, this time with a bike and a pool also!

9 weeks til my first tri. The Pain Train is about to depart the station!!

I just finished my race report from yesterday, if anyone wants to read it.  What an experience!  I'm glad I did it, but now it's done and I can (hopefully!) get back to a normal life.  Can someone remind me what normal is?

Just read your report- you ROCK.  I'm pretty impressed by all your swim bitchin' to turn in 2:26/100 yards avg.  Congrats, and take a couple days off.

Congrats Cheri!!!!

As for Munich, I suggest a team trip! I was there last may and it was one of my favourite places on a month long trek through europe and the UK. We even did a bike tour of the city with a stop at the Englicher (spelling?) bier garten. The had a beer called the 'bikers brew' which was half beer half sprite!

So last nights couple of guiness's turned into more than a couple followed by Jagerbombs and Carbombs ( half a pint of guiness with a shot glass of baileys dropped in ...then down it!) Needless to say I was in no shape today for my planned run, which sucks. Good news though is that I have dropped about 10-15 pounds since I started training! long way to go still, and I am not really focusing on the weight loss but it was cool to see anyways!

There is a great new article/video on bike fit that was just posted.  It was perfect timing also, I have been considering spending a little extra to get the 3D fit from Bike Barn in Houston, Tx over a normal fitting.  I have been on my new tri bike for 6 months now and definitely feel the need for another fitting due to changes in my comfort/ability on a tri bike.

Has anyone had experience with a 2D or 3D fit before?

I have question about hydration. Unfortunately I've been hit by a stomach bug of some sort or just ate something that was bad. Either way i'm really concerned about staying hydrated especially with my race on Sunday. I was hoping to use this week to make sure that I stay Hydrated this is something that I struggle with normally  and not only do I have to deal with the 105 degree weather we've been having I now have to get my stomach to stop repelling the fluids that I am trying to  replenish to begin with. Is there a pill I can swallow or something?

Pedialite works really good in these situations. Gatorade is just as good though.

I don't think there's any good evidence to support any benefit from hydrating more the week before a race. But not dehydrating is a good goal, so in your case it will help to get extra fluids. Whatever is palatable is a good start... any flavor Gatorade/Powerade/sports drink with electrolytes is fine.

Sorry to hear you're under the weather.
