Hi everyone.  Was trying to read some of the recent reports from the past couple weeks - lots of good race reports.  Was aways with family for past couple of weeks.  We have a motorhome, so we went up to Maine, then New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Cape Breton, and finally Prince Edward Island.  We all took our bikes, so did some riding (weather permitting).  But, a good vacation - and need to take these while we can since oldest is 15-yr old daughter, and she may not want too many more family vacations.

Good thing about the vacation was for the recuperation on my knee and calf.  They are both at about 80% now.  Pain is gone.  So, being away and not pushing myself to run and ride and swim gave a good amount of time to heal.

Keri - sounds like fun going on a cruise - hope you enjoy it.

Well, slowly getting back into rhythm, and into training again.  Have a couple of running races on the schedule, and hope to do a duathlon with 10-yr old son this fall.

Everyone, enjoy the summer.

That's awesome, Joey. Sounds like a great opportunity for some father/son bonding.

I took a day off of work and realized that not only am I insane, but so are all of you!  Ate a leisurely breakfast, walked for about 5 miles in a local park.  Went to gym and swam for an hour.

Later in the afternoon I went on a 17.65 mile bike ride.  Rode moderate to hard but didn't attempt to kill myself.  Then I decided that this was the day. I had left my running shoes on the deck and changed into them after the bike ride.  Gulped down the rest of my water bottle and ran around the block on leaden stumps called legs.

What the hell have I gotten myself into?  Why are all of you enabling me?  God I wish I was on a cruise!

Congrats on your first brick! You will continue to get used to that feeling, of running right off of the bike. It does get easier and that lead feeling goes away.

Cruise was AWESOME!!!  24 women who really know how to have a good time.  I was in ocean  in The Bahamas but I don't think you can call it an OWS when you have a frozen drink in each hand.  Seriously though a guy challenged me to a swim and I smoked him!

Welcome back Keri!

I have a biking ettiquette question.  I sometimes experience nasal congestion when riding.  Is it appropriate  to shall we say "clear your nasal passages" using a technique I will refer to as "snot rocket" for lack of a better word?  Is there a more socially acceptable way to accomplish a task such as this?  Obviously, I would ensure that nobody would be in the "spray zone", although if they were they would probably be violating drafting rules ...

As long as you don't hit anyone you are cool.  The only other option is to wipe it on the back of your gloves and then onto your shorts, but this approach is endless.  Snot rocketing is much better IMO.  I just need to make sure I don't hit myself!

Good luck at Musselman. It's a little over two weeks until my first tri.  By the way, I did another brick yesterday and the run did get a little easier!

I am a bit nervous - I signed up for this ride tomorrow http://www.northwestcyclingclub.com/club/rides/KFC%202009/KFC2009.html after some serious BT peer pressure.  I'm not doing the full 100 thank goodness.  I am planning to ride 55 which is twice as far as I have ever gone.
I went to the store to get my packet yesterday.  While there I tried 4 different saddles and walked out with the one I had on my bike.  I simply need to spend more time in the saddle and get used to it I guess.
At least it will look good in my log right?
Any suggestions to make the ride as comfortable as possible?

With "life" going on, I have been somewhat lax in participating in the group.  Just know that I wish you all the best.
And Keri - enjoy the bike ride.  Someday I will attempt a ride that long!

Holy cow look at all that GREEN in Keri's log!  LOL
4 hours on a bike is a long time!
This was my first supported ride and the rest stops were AWESOME!  I have new appreciation for fig newtons!!!
The first 35 were great.  The last 15-20 were miserable and I mean REALLY miserable.  I was alone for most of it which makes for a very long ride.  I was really nauseaus for the last 5 miles but there was no shade or I might have pulled over.  I powered through and made it!  I won't be getting on a bike for at least a few days.

After 3 other BTers and I hit Taco Cabana for some chow and BEER!

What a great thing your daughter did!  That is really cool, she gets a high five from me!  I wish I could grow some hair ... to donate of course.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch.  I have a day off from work and swam in the morning.  I think I finally found out why I have been struggling so much at my ows's.  All of my pool training has been focused on endurance and form.  I swim slowly in the pool but I tend to swim much faster at the ows's, probably because I see folks out ahead of me and I want to keep up.  I think this has been causing me to go into oxygen debt and I alter my normal 4 stroke rythm to get more air.  I basically fall apart in the ocean!

Today for the first time I tried some drills.  I swam 100 yards at an increased pace and then rested.  I repeated this four times.  I am hoping this gets me acclimated to breathing harder.  I also practiced alternate side breathing.  I just wish I had figured this out a couple of months ago!  Less than two weeks before my first tri ...  Nervous & excited all at the same time.  Just don't want to DNF, no DNF, no DNF, no DNF.

Hey, what happened to our mentors?  Did they drown at musselman?  I hope they are OK!   Maybe they eloped...

don't change up too much!!  you only have two weeks to go, so stick to what has been working for you in the pool/ows.  Being a bigger guy, I use a lot of oxygen!  so alternate breathing will never be part of my swim.  I breath every stroke on the left.

Didn't see Tim on the Musselman leaderboard, but I'm sure they both rolled.

Charlie1 - I totally know what you mean about going out faster in OW.  I swim at a lake with other tri'ers a few times a month and I notice when I swim next to them I go out too fast and am breathing every other stroke 50 yards in!  Going slow is good!  This is not a sprint - well, it is but not like a 50 meter sprint.  Endurance is important.  Race your race.  My mantra is stroke, stroke, glide - don't forget to glide Smile
