Wow - coming in from San Diego for T-man. Nice. I'll actually be headed out your way in a few weeks. Any good swim/bike/run recommendations?

Yeah, Oceanside is a great race!  I live close by, so it's tough to pass that one up.  I was hoping to go sub-5 for the first time and ended up finishing in 4:55, so it was a good day for me.

From reading the threads in this forum and some of the race reports, it seems that Timberman can be summed up shortly as:

Beautiful course.
Warm water.
Out & back bike course with one major hill you have to climb twice.
Potential for hot, humid conditions on the run.

Are there any hills to speak of on the run?  The course description says "rolling", but I didn't see anyone mention anything about hills in their reports.

Accommodations look to be scarce and it seems that there's quite a bottleneck getting into the park on race morning.  Those seem to be the only drawbacks.  Well, that and it's 3,000 miles away   I spoke with a training buddy at the track last night who did the race last year and he said that it was a great race and he would absolutely do it again.

Am I missing anything?  Thanks for any information.  I'm hoping to travel out and do it with at least two friends, so we'll need to make sure we can all get in.  I saw on another forum that there were only 50 spots left a couple of weeks ago.  Registration was still open as of last night on Active.com.

Absolutely!  Depending on where you're staying, there are plenty of options.  I was in the ocean for a night swim last night and the water temp is still hovering around 60, so you'll want to wear a wetsuit if you're going to be swimming for long (although there were a few swimming around in the dark without one last night).  The Cove in La Jolla is a definite "must" if you're planning an OWS in San Diego.  Lots of good cycling routes, too.  The best is probably just to go up and down the coast.  It's tough to beat that.  Same thing for running, although Mission Bay and Lake Miramar and also nice places to run if they're convenient to get to for you.  I'm a Tri Club member, so hit me up closer to when you're coming out if you're interested in a group ride (Sat) or swim (Mon & Fri @ 6 P.M.).

I'm glad I could still sign up for this race! I'm excited even though I might not be able to train a lot (had a baby 11 weeks ago).

Wilhelm-
Welcome to the BT Branch of the TimberCrew.  I just kinda' made that up as I typed, but it had a nice ring to it.  Welcome nevertheless and congratulations on your youngster!  You might have more time to train then you think.  When they are this young they take at least two naps a day and you don't have to chase them around keeping them from running with scissors, playing with matches, and sticking strange objects into electic outlets or in their nose.
Peace,
~Sam

Nice job, Sam!  Had to cut my 80-miler short today as I snapped a derailleur cable trying to get back up in the big ring.  Had to break away from our group ride and limp 20 miles back home.  Of course, I picked up a flat along the way.  Better today than during a race.  Running 20 tomorrow as last long prep for Boston.  Hope everyone else's training is going well.

WoW!  You guys are putting in some crazy volumes there!  Where do you get all that energy this early in the season?  Do you  have kids?  I  would probably get more workouts done too if I could stop drinking so much Rum+Coke so late in the evening.

Well....I'm inspired.  Monday is a big day for some of us!  It marks the "20-weeks out from race mark"  and so it's time for me and others with a 20-week plan to start getting serious (a little).  Hopefully I will even start going to the pool again (haha).

Happy training everybody!

Just signed up for this race, new to BT this year and new to HIM. Timberman will be my first HIM, I'm very excited and looking forward to it. I'll be moving along into the 40-44 AG this year too...with the grey hair to show for it. Tongue out

Week 11 here - base training is over and we're starting our Build Phase TODAY!!!!

The entire time and engery discussion is one I haven't entirely figured out yet. Two kids here under 3 years of age, daily trip to Manhattan from Bucks County,PA and I don't get home until right around 7PM. Weekends I watch the two kids.

If I don't get in the pool or on the treadmill at around 4AM I won't have time to train (hah - train. More like I have to catch a 6AM train). Spend time on the trainer around 9PM after the kids have been put to bed. That's it. Maybe some babysitters once a week when I find myself registered for a Sunday morning race.

Finding time to train is actually harder than the actual training!

Sjwwebster:  Welcome.  Congratulations on taking the leap to the HIM.

michael2:  If my wife and I didn't have similar schedules (I teach elementary; she teaches high school) I don't know how we would manage with our four children (11, 9, 6, 1.75-ish).

Whew!!!  I set the bar high for myself.  In my first unofficial...official time trial on my designated 10 mile TT course I averaged 24.0!  This happens if I'm doing well later in the season, but not usually this early.  I don't know if I'm excited or intimidated.  The first half was into a 13 mph wind and the trip back of course was cruisin' with a tailwind.  Now...if I could just sustain that over 40K, that would be fantastic!

Peace,
~Sam

Awesome 10-mile TT, Sam!  I've got the first 20k test with the Tri Club on Weds.  Last year, I maxed out at 23.6, so it will be interesting to see how I'm starting off the season.  Just hoping it won't be too windy out around Fiesta Island.

Got last 20-miler in before Boston yesterday and made it out to the Shores in the afternoon.  Earthquake freaked me out a bit in that they usually bring up some big creatures from the deep, so I didn't venture too far off shore.  Just did about 3/4 mile with some bursts / technique drills.

Raining here today, so OWS was canceled.  I guess I'll be on the trainer tonight watching the game.  Track tomorrow.

Sam and Mike, you guys are hard core--I enjoy reading your updates.  Today, I went into NYC for a one-loop preview of Central Park for the MORE half-marathon.  It was a gorgeous day, and now I'm really motivated for the start of my 20-week training program.  Timberman or bust!  (Okay, maybe not bust, but you get the idea.)

HalfIronMike-Thanks.  I don't know how you do it out there.  I get it that the weather is always wonderful and you have great terrain and wonderful support...it's the whole earthquake and sea creature thing that gets me.  I live on a freshwater, inland lake...way easier on the brain.
Oh!  Way to go with the 20-miler.  I'll be marathon sherpa for my wife in Boston.  I'd say I'll see you there, but...let's just be honest.  Well, I'll tell you what, I'll be the guy on the sidelines clapping and cheering.  I'm thinking you'll be the guy in running shoes running down the road.

Jacqueline-Thanks.  I'm inspired by just about anyone who is putting one proverbial foot in front of the other.  So, I enjoy reading all the updates to.  It fires me up.  Good work on your 13 miler.

LOL, thanks but I only did one loop, so it was just 6.55.  But, it was a really great 6.55!

Simon - Welcome to BT, the TM thread, and the M40-44 AG.  We actually have one of the toughest groups out there.  In many races, its actually the toughest group.  Sometimes the 35-39 guys can give us a run for our money though.

I started my 20-week plan with a missed workout, but it was just a swim so not a huge loss.  Got up late this morning (4:50am) but still got my scheduled run in.  1mile intervals in zone4.

CP Loop is a tough loop. Did you run it clockwise or counter-cw? MIght have seen you there (yeah right, just like the Boston pals getting together) as I was in CP Sunday too. Beautiful weather. Actually ran a bit the previous day for the Scotland Run. Nope, didn't wear a kilt.

And just curious...how did you get 6.55? Garmin? I only ask because there's always a debate about how far 1 loop is.

So gang, how did we do in March?

Here's my stats:

Run 65 mi
Bike 150 mi
Swim 8500 yards (down from 13K in Feb - need to bump this back up)

And I'll officially revive the Great Swamp / Stirling hotel ride meet-up discussion.

I was away last week in FL and didnt get to swim much (go figure), zero biking, but ran almost every day.

I was inspired by one of Sam's postings with his wicked fast 10 mile run, and one morning set out on a short (4 mi) but speedy (for me) run that was the fastest run @ lowest HR I've ever had.  Thanks Sam!    I also did a nice 8 miler along the shoreline in Clearwater Beach - I just wanted to keep going, and going, and going ....

Back yesterday for a 20 mi ride thru the Swamp, my bike missed me

Everyone got their training plan set ??

March's totals:
Bike:13h 53m 54s  - 281.78 Mi
Run:23h 26m 09s  - 174.5 Mi
Swim:1h 15m 25s  - 3750 Yd
Strength:6h 00m

Started trying to up my biking a little and added swimming at the end of the month.  Going to try and swim 2x a week now.  I'd like to get the bike up more but don't really have time right now.  I'll be making time in another month or so though...

I have the intermediate plan from here loaded up and ready to go but I just use plans as guidelines and have basic goals I like to meet.  Just by instinct, I know if I can run about 35mpw, bike a little over 100mpw and just swim a couple times a week from now until the long island wound is warm enough to start doing OWS in that I'll be close to where I need to be.  Ideally if I could bike 150mpw I think it would be more optimal but I just don't have the time...

MikeJ & Tri Sam - thanks for the responses, nice to feel part of a training group.

MikeJ - yeah when I started Tri's I was under the impression that (logically?) the younger folk (20 -35) would be the fastest so I was surprised when someone told me 35-39 and 40-44 were in fact super competivive. After a few races and scanning the results pages I quickly realized how competive these groups were for both M and F AG's.

Tri Sam that's some Time Trial average - many congrats!!

So far so good this week on training, 5:45 start this AM for 45 min hill rides in Palisades Park which I'll be doing Tue and Thu every week now with my Tri group. I feel very luck to live between GWB and Riverbank Park so I can do hills and swim in the 50M pool on alternate days, plus run in the evenings. Great to be on here and see how others are training, you guys are such a valuable source of information and knowledge. Laughing
