nichip - 2010-04-10 7:37 PM well, now that I am running again,Ihave a question. How many miles could I safely run in a week? go ahead and look at my logs. I haven't done much in the last 3 weeks. Before that, I was up to 12 miles for my long run and 30 plus miles per week. I do not want to start all over again.but, i also do not want to reinjure myself by doing too much.My plan is to do a 4.6 mile run on monday with some friends. i ran with them today and we did an easy 12 minute mile pace. The only thing i will do differently is to do a run/walk ratio of 1:1. i was doing 2:1 before my injury. I see my chiro on wed. Thanks for your help! it is greatly appreciated.Nichi

Thanks Nichi- My next challenging race is in July. Up hill for 1600 feet over 5 miles. I am not an expert on adding running distances back after an injury. there are lots of Ghoulies that can help you on that. What is will say is GO SLOW. your 1:1 ratio sounds sane. Just promise yourself not to be wedded to a distance and listen to your body. If it is straining or hurting STOP. There will always be another day, but not if you re injure yourself.

wow...prolific workouts & postings.... we only ran/walked for 28 minutes this morning. wanted to get in an hour of weights too, but had to go to shabbat services, then my daughter's soccer game, then the women's pro soccer season opener, and mom-ness just got in the way. have my first training bike ride with team fight in the morning, though, so i'm really psyched - target is 14 miles, which would be my longest ride ever. some day will work up to running  a mile consecutively too

loved the "why suck at 1 sport...." quote - my favorite of the day, so thanks!

Marla, you are not alone in the mom-ness getting in the way of training. I was originally scheduled to go to a small lake out in the desert west of Salt Lake for a group OWS with the local tri club. My hubby ended up being in town this weekend, and my son's soccer coach decided to send out the email with the first game of the season--the email came on Tuesday, the game was today. Surprised So, I bagged the OWS, and made plans with a friend to go run and then catch a quick swim at 7 AM. Then, my darling daughter had a friend sleep over (probably only the 2nd time she's had a friend stay the night EVER). They were up until 6 AM. So, I was mostly up until 6 AM as well. Getting out of bed did not sound good at 6:30. And of course we had some household stuff to do today while hubby was here, so I skipped the bike ride I was invited to go on this afternoon. Just know you are not alone--and good for you for getting in what you could, when you could. You are way ahead of those who never got up off the couch today.

ceilidh - 2010-04-10 3:43 PM I finished my HM in 2:35 today. The time is about what I had figured I would do. I am slow and steady usually. I had drama in the morning that changed everything but I did the best I could. I had to substitute going to the actual race with running my own personal HM. The car died and there I stood with the DH long gone to a business breakfast. By the time he got back, If I had driven, I would have missed the start time.

Congratulations, that is a great time!!! Sorry about the drama but it does sound like you made the best of it.

Thanks, Amy - I needed that!

Dana & I got in our running group homework before going to synagogue yesterday, only to be told (in the nicest possible way at least) by the soccer coach that running BEFORE a game is not a great idea...of course felt guilty bc it was the only way I was going to get it in....but then this morning, had a FABULOUS time on the bike on the group training ride - turned out it was just the guy from the bike shop, his neighbor, and me, and I got so much wonderful advice - that, and riding without falling was just fabulous... on a gorgeous spring day, it was as good as chocolate!! We covered just 14 miles in 1-2 hours with tons of stops, but I could've done all over again, so am excited to just start putting on miles ....might even learn to go downhill without hugging the brakes the whole way too!

I have been swimming then biking back to back for ~12 weeks now.  Today I decided to change things up by biking then running.  Holy Crap!  I never wanted to cry while running before but I very nearly went there today.  How do you do this??  I wanted to lay down on the trail and take a nap - the horses can step over me.

It's clear that I need to concentrate on this transition!

I did my first bike-run transition yesterday as well and could not believe how different the legs felt than on a normal run. I'm REALLY glad I decided to do this earlier than my training plan suggests. I will definitely be working on this again.

Way to work it out on your own and make lemonade out of those lemons!!  I hope I can someday do the same thing...my first reaction these days would have been to curse up a storm for a bit, temporarily blame my wife, and then head inside to make myself a huge breakfast while I stewed on the couch.  I am trying to change though!

I did my first real bike/run transistion 2 weeks ago and I was like gumbee trying to run off the bike, plus a 100 year old man trying to straighten my back up (I quit after a half mile).  The next week I upped the cadence the last mile or two and stop pedaling and stood up to stretch my back.  Much better transistion.

onevette80 - 2010-04-08 10:31 AM Last night I was doing some interval training on my bike.  I just went from a roadie to a P2 and am still not comfortable for long periods of time in the aero position, so I end up not in the aero position for most of my ride.......
Soooooo, heres my prob.  When Im doing intervals on my trainer and I drop down into aero, without changing cadence or gear, my HR drops by like 20bpm almost instantly!  I'm thinking theres an issue with my HR monitor(nike triax  c10)??? Or that body position in the aero position is significanlty more effecient.  I know that it is but.........?  20 bpm???  thats just crazy!!!
Any other reasons anyone can think of?

I was thinking about this yesterday on my run.

Did you by any chance change your breathing. If you were breathing through your mouth when you were upright, but then started breathing through your nose when you went aero that could explain the drop in HR. Breathing through your nose helps to regulate your heart rate.

*Keep that in mind. If you start feeling like you are working too hard, breathe through your nose and you will get your heart rate under control.

Anyway, it was just a thought.
