Very cool to hear that you can train during work hours..! Good for you!
Anyone else feeling like training is starting to feel like a second job?? Know this is crunch time..and feeling pretty strong (right now)..but the time commitment..altho, if the next weeks go by like the summer did- it will be over before I know it!
Did my 1/2 IM "practice" race last weekend & despite a horrible few weeks leading up to the race with "life" stuff, feeling disorganized, bike issues, cold start, and no sleep -zero- the night before..had a good race and a great time doing it..!
As someone else commented , starting to feel like actually training for an IM. Today was a 4 hr bike followed by a 45 min run and it was ok!!

LODGING!!!!

Got a reservation at Spring Hill - looks like a backup condo may have come through.  At Mill & Rio Salado are we going to be dealing with train noise??!

Locals?   Veterans???

Help!!!

5 solid hours on the bike for me today after doing a HIM last weekend and Oly yesterday.  The combo of the two races (and how I felt in each) plus making it through the bike pretty solidly today--I'm feeling happy!

Shout out to Cordova78 as he CRUSHED Syracuse 70.3 today--not an easy bike ride, but he was still rolling fast and then threw down a stellar run!! Looking forward to what you do at IMAZ, Chris!!

Thanks for all the responses!! Feel SO much better about training now. Very little racing for me before AZ. No 70.3 and oly had the swim cancelled due to weather so it was only a bike/run. I'm a decent swimmer, but the idea of starting a swim with 3500 friends is a little scary. Enjoying this ramp up in volume. This week is a 90 mile ride/8 mile run brick then a 16 mile run the next day. So far my body has taken training well. I feel strong and hope the weather continues to help. In St. Louis it's in the 70's now, PERFECT for training. Brittney, congrats on all the races, ur a machine!! Hope everyone is doing well. 6 more big weeks then taper for me!

Hey all,

first post here - first triathlon (HIM) last weekend and first IM in AZ. Looking forward to the challenge....As Im flying in to AZ on Friday 18th and taking out the redeye at 11pm after the event (yes - no vacation days left...) I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation for lodging?

Mission Palm is sold out, Twin Palms looks oldschool and has bad reviews but has free Airport transportation, Marriott is sold out also...anything else?

See you in Tempe then...

Yikes, flying out the night of the race???  Ouch.  Keep in mind that Friday is the last day for athlete registration, so make sure you are flying in early in the morning.  Saturday is for bike and transition bag check-in only.

There will likely be quite a few lodging cancellations as we get closer to race day - so keep checking.  Something will definitely open up.

I can't help you with lodging, but getting in on the 18th, are you getting in before 4PM because you HAVE TO HAVE TO be registered by that time on Friday.  There is no packet pick up/registration available on Saturday, only bike check in.  Make sure you don't miss the timing on that or they will NOT let you race!

Thinking about signing up for this race next year. anyone have any insight on how quickly it fills up? If I am online when it opens do I have a pretty good chance of getting in?

Next years race will sell out within a few hours of it going online. The best way to get in is to be onsite Monday morning.

Can any of the veterans answer if there is a big risk of flatting on the bike course?  I'm planning on running thinner race wheels / latex tubes and was concerned about the thickets and road conditions prior to it.

The bike course is mostly open desert so its always possible to pick up a thorn if the wind kicks debris onto the road.   That said, I rode the beeline over the weekend and it was fairly clean except for a 100yd section that was covered in chip seal and broken glass.  Out of the 40-50 people out there, I only saw one person on the side of the road changing a flat.

Any idea on what the temps will be like?  Will the desert morning make for a chilly start to the bike?  Will the run be in blazing hot dry heat?  How cold will it get after dark?  I'm thinking arm warmers to start the bike and a long sleeve shirt for my run special needs bag.  2 months!!  Getting real, fast!

I watched IMAZ last year and the weather was unpredictable.  The day before the race it was slightly warm and sunny.  The day of the race, it was cold, windy, and rain/mist.  Pack the kitchen sink and hope you don't have to use all of it on the same day.   Embarassed

AHHHHHH....2 months out everyone!!!! Where has the time gone???

I hope everyone is doing well with training!! The weather is starting to get cooler here and I actually had to get "winter" gear on for my long bike ride this weekend. I'm dreading the day when we get dumped on with snow and I'll be doing 6hr. trainer rides in my living room...ugh!

I've been freezing when I'm running (at 4:30 am) and have also started using the colder weather gear on the bike. I too am dreading longer trainer rides. I'm considering starting my long rides for a couple hours on the trainer then heading outside so I can start in the dark w/out buying lights, etc.

2 months...I'm scared and excited. Not sure in which order...

I was able to get into IMA on line for the 2011 event (I live in Wisconsin so being onsite is not possible).  I would recommend you have your Active password and etc ready to go and hit the enter bottom as soon as it opens.   I also got into Wisconsin for 2012 online.  My humble opinion is that the events are sligthly higher then then demand right now.  You are seeing that in IM Canada and the Idaho event being open longer then usual.

Does anyone know if they have a standard flavor of Ironman Perform that they serve on the course?  I have never had it and want to try it out but I want to make sure I get the flavor that will be available on race day.

Also, is there a wide variety of powerbar gel flavors?

Thanks!

Water temp should be about 60. Air temps will be in the mid 50s to start and warm up to mid 70s before cooling off again after dark.

Weather conditions for last years race were not normal or expected.

I seem to be getting a lot of flats lately. I'm going to get some new tires next week, but now I'm worried about flatting more than once at IMAZ and not having more than one tube (I only carry one on training rides as it's been sufficient so far). I know the chances of flatting twice or more are low, but if I only have two tubes with me...am I totally screwed? Do I bring more like 3?
