Veteran 392 Calgary | Subject: RE: March CRUSHERS U-Pick It Challenge Hi everyone! Life is BACK TO NORMAL! (sort of, for the most part, we'll see) ... the folks are gone! I can reclaim my home, my time, my diet, and my life! ;-) Went back to work today (I work 5 on/5 off) and we had the tv on all day - wow, the devastation in Japan is so mindnumbing, and my thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected world-wide. I've worked in Emergency Services for not quite 10 years now and I've been involved in my fair share of major events, including mass evacuations and natural and man-made disasters ... I can't even begin to imagine Japan's situation. Wouldn't even know where to start. Think I would just throw down my gloves and say, wtf ... but then I'd likely pick those gloves back up again and dig in - we get through by doing, right? To everyone, I've read all the posts but don't want to be a post-hog - so ... I'll just say great news to everyone who's had some, sorry about the injuries to those who are hurt (believe me I feel your pain!) ... and happy weekend to everyone who's a normal person! ;-) ETA: Life isn't completely back to normal as my boyfriend leaves in a few days for 3 weeks of holidays (without me, yes, without me, but with his kids, so I'm cool with it) ... so ... that'll be weird, but absence makes the heart grow fonder, right? You are so right. It is hard to wrap your head around such a huge disaster. The Japanese people are amazingly resilient. They have proved it time and time again throughout history. |

Short version - reffing most of the day tomorrow, remedial massage, referees pre season BBQ, 80k bike on Sunday, yoga, lunch with friends, groceries, cleaning.....and maybe a little sleep if I am lucky! that's it? hope your mood improves ... good luck with everything this weekend! Thanks Yanti. I had a horrible weekend though. Paid the price for too much rushing around, backed my car into someone, definitely an insurance job Then had another flat on my bike ride, whole catalogue of disasters and I called for a ride at 20k, ensuing row with hubby because I was not prepared enough to fix my flat (2 cannisters and 2 tubes was not enough for my incompetence this morning), and didn't know how to fix a broken chain (not sure where THAT came into it, I have never had one!). Anyway, the rest of the day MUST get better surely?! I am just having a weekend where I am wondering what on earth I did that was so bad to deserve this. Trying to remind myself that I am fine really, my problems have nothing on those in Japan right now. |

The Crescent City harbor has sustained massive damage. This video was taken from a point along the bike course of the Crescent City triathlon that I do every August. Glad you are safe. Also heard someone was swept away taking pictures - what idiots, seriously! People should take more care! Stay safe and have a good weekend |

Trying to remind myself that I am fine really, my problems have nothing on those in Japan right now. True. It does give you perspective, gratitude, and humility. But it doesn't mean your problems don't suck, heh. {{MELON PRESS}} actually I had no idea how tall you were, I am a shortie at 5' 3" (ish), it'd be more like a my-head-with-your-melons press. Oh, I like that. I used to get so frustrated with all the preparation and crap just getting my bike out the door, never mind if something went wrong ... however, lots of practice there makes perfect as well, it's just getting it down. Also, some tyres are just much harder to change than others. Chain--mini chain tools are cheap and portable but not so easy to use. Magic Link is pretty good (it's an easy-to-use replacement chain link). A regular chain tool is bulky, but if you've already got a big saddle bag or jersey pockets, an easy toss. Worst comes to worst, you can actually use a thin zip tie to connect the two ends of the chain. Won't keep you on your ride, but it'll get you home. |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: March CRUSHERS U-Pick It Challenge So after three days in bed, I make it out for an ocean swim--turns out to be the worst conditions I've ever swam in. They weren't great to begin with, then they got rough, fast (I saw the surfers heading in!) and a flash storm broke out. It was awesome. I don't think I've ever swum so fast in to shore or run so fast back to shelter ... |

Master 1623 | Subject: RE: March CRUSHERS U-Pick It Challenge Race today... first DNF Copied from my training log: My first DNF Really really really small race, not well organized but whatever it was just supposed to be a fun thing for me and they were raising money for their mission trip to DC. Ran about .5 mile then shins were on fire, chest hurt with every breath and it was only getting worse. James found me (he was walking around taking pictures) and walked the rest of the first loop with me. I'm disappointed but I know the important thing is keeping my shins healthy for my 10k not finishing a small 5k.

Try not to be too disappointed Emma, everyone (well lots of people anyway), has a DNF or two to their name for whatever reason. I have one myself from a few years back, just a 10k, and I was so sad because it was an Easter race with chocolate eggs for finishers and I didn't get one! Look after your shins! |

I'm sorry, Emma. I had a DNF this fall at an Oly race. I was getting sick. I finished the swim and pulled out of the race. It's good to know when your body can't take any more abuse. Take care of your shins. |

Elite 3913 far northern CA | Subject: RE: March CRUSHERS U-Pick It Challenge I finished the 10 mile race in brutal conditions. I thought I had a PR! Unfortunately, I was mistaken. Oh well. The wind was howling and it rained the whole time. At one point, my pace slowed to a 10 minute mile due to the headwind! Sheesh! I'm still happy with my time because I know it would have been a PR had the weather been better. |
