I just signed an online petition sponsored by Sports Authority to bring Ironman to Central Oregon for 2013.   I to will be doing my first Ironman in 2013 and was planning to IMCD or Vineman Full in Celebration of my 50th B-Day.  If I plan to do IMCD I would volunteer and then sign up.  About a days drive from Oregon (Willamette Valley).

Central Oregon is beautiful with a lot of reserviors to swim in.  Pacific Crest Half-Iron Distance Swim  is done in a Reservior outside of Sunriver, Oregon.  Great country for an Ironman.  Only other issue is the altitude; can really do a number on you if you aren't use to it; especially on the run.

I don't think the Oregon bid is only out to the WTC. They just want a full distance event. I've heard they are trying to woo Rev3 as well.

Not yet but, I am meeting up with a buddy for a 6 mile run at 11, that should be enough time for the waffles I am making/eating to settle.

For just walking around, there is River Front Park (you will be very close to the park), it's a pretty neat park right in the middle of the city with a river, and a lot of leftover stuff from Expo '74, Manito Park with it's Rose garden and Japanese Garden are pretty awesome.  You would think after living in Spokane for 24+ years, if you include my 3 years at Fairchild, I would have a better idea of what to tell you.  Let me get back to this in a bit as I am drawing a blank other than lots of places to eat and drink.

9 miles while kids played with their toys. They had no idea I was even gone. Hard to compete with Lego. Happy Holidays to all on the thread.

A little over 5.5 miles for me!   Didn't think I could work in a run today but was able to steal away while dinner was cooking.

Merry Christmas!

Me too. Snow on the ground and ice on the roads all my training until April/May will be indoors.

I just signed up for the trainerroad.com program and I think it is going to make my indoor trainer rides a lot more bearable. Might be something worth looking into if you are stuck inside for the winter.

All right.  Training plan starts next week after a holidays full of gorging on food (but I ran almost every day!).  Good luck to all and Happy New Year!

Wow, sitting here in Afghanistan (deployed) catching up on this thread and wishing like hell I was going to be home earlier than planned (late-Mar)! I was contemplating signing up for CdA before I came over but didn't think that Apr and May was enough time to train, so I didn't. Looking at IM Lousiville now. Also going to try for three XTERRAs this year--did two in '11 and I am hooked.

CdA 2011 was epic! It was my first IM and it was everything I thought it would be and more. For you first-timers, I haven't seen it in this thread (yet) but the absolute best advice in hindsight is ride your bike, ride your bike some more and then get back on and ride your bike. I thought I had a pretty good base going into this but the course isn't easy and nutrition bit me in the a$$ hard at about mile 65 and I almost bonked completely. Not only did my bike time suffer but the run was just brutal after that.Frown

Also, and this is mentioned in this thread, the water was indeed cold on race morning but the air temp was in the mid-40s so I was actually looking fwd to getting in the water. My workout partner and I did some swimming both days prior to get an idea of what to expect so the water temp wasn't that much of a shocker. We had done some OWS but not at that temp and my friend started gasping in the water the day prior and was freaking out up until the morning of when his adrenaline and fortitude pulled him through (more the latter).

As for training plans, I used the BT 16-week silver plan and as someone else mentioned, WAY too much swimming...the bike and running however, are great builders. I would recommend the 20-week instead since it's not quite as compressed.

Glad to see all the interest and another sell-out. Would really like to see a solid answer/decision on the bike route though...

First, from one service member to another, thank you for your service and stay safe.

I was a volunteer for 2011 and it was pretty freaking cold in the morning!  Thanks for the insight/tips.  I will take all I can get as this is my first IM, and I am going from sprint to IM with nothing in between tri wise.

I am really starting to question my motivation to due this thing. Anybody else having motivation problems? I haven't even started and real volume yet and I'm feeling really blah about the whole race. Hopefully a trip to San Diego for some outside training at the end of the month will help. Anyone else burnt out?

I can't believe I haven't thought about this before... but do those of us coming to the NW from the rest of the country need to be worried about the altitude?  Would a couple days there before the race to adjust be enough?

Thanks carl425 for the advice and for your service to our country!!!
