Pretty sure I have shin splints in my left shin. Less than 6 weeks before my marathon
Any advice? I don't have the strength to post in TT.

I have a feeling I should rest, ice, compress, and aqua jog (oh god) - combined with a long taper. Sad, sad, sad face.

That is about it, also check your running surface.  The roads here are crowned and if you run consistently on one side you are putting more pressure on one leg than the other.  This is how I would up with shinsplints in my left leg a while back.  Some dreadmill work and possible some trail running might be ok in place of aqua jogging if it's not too bad.

Thanks Kate. The funny thing is, I had no pain until I did a long run (12 of my 18 miles) on a gravel trail about 10 days ago. The interwebs says a change in running surface can cause them, but just one long run?? Ugh.

I'm very invested in this race so the stubborn part of me wants to at least try.

Off to get my ice pack from the freezer.

I hope they heal quickly for you then.  If you are not opposed to taking them anti-inflammatories, preferably Advil or Aleve should also help.  If there is a tendon issue involved 2 Aleve 2x a day for a week or so tends to knock it down really well, at least for me.  Good Luck!

Yup, and yup.

Shin splints aren't an injury per se ... they're a symptom (but usually of something injured or about to be).

Morning TAN!!

Happy to be alive and drinking coffee (another bold and black drinker here) after this morning's near death experience.

Yay to being alive!!

This is what happens when you let the menfolk drive you kow.

Good morning Gorgeous.

I really should know better than to let him lead.

Good morning Beautiful!  I'm glad to hear that you're snug and dry and out of Isaac's path.

Well, looky who slithered in (me, ha ha ... )

It must be a happy {{{TANGEMELONS PRESS}}} day!

Good Morning Yantilicious!!!

I know I've been a bit MIA - I've had some fairly low days lately and haven't really wanted to be around anyone either IRL or online.  Feeling a bit better now

How are you and your parents???

Working on the well but yep statined up and taking niacin, red yeast rice, and psyllium to boot.

Wish me luck tonight I am going for my goal leg press weight with Godzilla tonight.

Planning a Backpacking trip to SC also.  There is a race there I may be reffing for so I am thinking I will take a few extra days and run away to the wilderness.

How are Paradise and the Piglets treating you these days, Goddess-like I hope.

Don't question that you're feeling OK - just accept and enjoy it!  (and try to keep it going )

I'm trying to stay positive that the down times won't last forever, but this is a lot harder than I expected it to be.  The good news is that I will wake up tomorrow, as I do every morning, happy to be here.

This pair has 76 miles on them and I replace between 250 and 300 miles every pair.
I thought about over-running also, but I've only been running 4 days a week for this marathon... so strange.

So many things could feed into this.  I actually started rotating through a few different pairs of running shoes.  My feet and legs seemed to like even a slight variation in fit and feel from run to run to avoid too much pounding day in and day out in exactly the same way.  Slight increase in upfront costs to have multiple shoes, but after adding in a new one every month or two, I need to replace each individual pair less often.  I made one other adjustment too, but I hesitate to speak of it.

I am bored. Bored enough that I'm thinking of painting my closet.  That's pretty bored.

I have the same issues Lisa! Last year it was my left shin.  Right now I am dealing with my right shin.  I had 10 weeks of PT for my left shin.  Very painful massages, ultrasound therapy, new shoes and inserts.  It can turn into a stress fracture if your not careful. I had do to a lot of icing and rest.  Sorry you are dealing with this before your marathon.

If only we were in the same city ... we could at least go out to lunch or to IKEA.

I know!  A good, healthy paleo lunch with lots of avocado (NOM!) and then to do some pretend shopping as I've told Tony that I won't buy anything else for the apartment until I have a job (we'll see about that one) I could spend hours in Ikea - it's a happy place.

I'm leery about going to the doc, who might just tell me to rest - seems like a waste of time to have her tell me that. But I have to have her referral to get any PT covered by my insurance. And the last PT she sent me to really rubbed me the wrong way.

Did the ultra sound stuff work?

Understandable! That referral crap is a pain in the a$$! And sometimes it is very hard to find a good PT.

Yes...but it was the combination of everything that finally turned things around.
