Everyone here and on the Facebook group have been talking about it! What is the facebook group? I looked at the Ironman Arizona facebook page and didn't see any posts about the new run course Thanks for the link. Just sent a request to be added to the group |

128 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Hey! Just found this thread. "I'm in!" Name: Keith (from NJ). after reading through the entire thread it looks like i'm the only east coaster What is your Ironman resume? This will be my first 140.6. I completed a 70.3 here in NY last weekend which was my first half Why did you choose Ironman Arizona? I wanted something in November so I could have my training peak in the cooler months. I also wanted a beginner friendly / spectator friendly course and the fact that there is an in-n-out burger near the finish is a plus. What are you goals for IMAZ 2013? I just want to finish but I really hope it does not come down to the midnight cut off. Nutrition plan: I have been using gatorade, GU and water on my long rides and that is what I went with last week in the half. There was also some thread here where someone suggested pay-day candy bars and I have also been using them on the bike alternating with gels. I don't have a firm plan other than drink, drink, eat/gel, repeat over a 40-45min period. What are you most looking forward to? Just crossing that line. For the past 8 years I have watched (and rewatched) the IM Championships and said "one day." Last October I finally said "this is my time to do this" because as I get older it is not going to get any easier. I chose IM AZ as my first choice and Coz as a back up. |

It will still be a multi-loop course (2 loops) and the only hill in Tempe is Curry hill. The Curry hill will still be part of the run course but everything else will be flat. Seems like a lot of folks are stressing about the course change but it will be great. Flat, just as spectator friendly, less loops for participants, etc. |

Member 347 Scottsdale, AZ | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Originally posted by Joeyj1974 Great conversations! I'm getting very nervous as I'm way behind in training. New job and putting in 10-12 hour days = not much time to train.... I have not used any Salt type supplements. Can anyone comment on the use and how many/often you use them on the course. I do tend to get cramps and this may be the cause as i sweet a LOT... I have been using the GU Roctane on my long rides along with water, stinger waffles and shot blocks. I thought I was taking in plenty of electrolytes until I put my nutrition plan on paper. While I was taking in enough sodium, I was lacking in other areas (potassium, magnesium, chloride, etc). As a result, I started taking one Salt Stick per hour which seems to help... Especially in the AZ heat |

Especially in the AZ heat I am not a big cramper, but just raced 70.3 World Championship in Vegas where heat was expected to be in 100's (thankfully it rained and was not as hot!) My coach had me switch up my nutrition which was very low sodium (and for gut issues I've dealt with as well) and using perform, powerbar and salt tabs, which are all higher sodium etc. than many brands. I took two tabs per hour on the bike (even though it rained the whole time) and salt at every aid station on the run. I felt better than I ever have on the toughest hilly course for a half I've ever raced. Consider me sold! I'd do a sweat test on the bike and run to help you determine what you need to take...as a heavy sweater, your needs may be much higher...I did my sweat tests to help confirm what I needed!! |

Expert 1091 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Thanks for the feed back...I know it will still be two loops, but I've done 3 races with 3-4 loops and I really respond well to being around the crowds more. I've done 3 IM with 2 loops and it's always great in town, but usually a little tougher out at the back end of the loop. But just like race day...you have to adapt! |

207 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread even with it being 2 loop there will be many many chances for family to be there cheering you on. there will still be the figure 8 there by the mill bridge plus it is a quick walk to curry hill to catch your runners.... and that is a great viewing point |

There's an out-and-back on both the north and south sides of TTL. Family/friends will be able to see their runner twice per loop on the south side then can walk over either the Mill or Rural bridges to catch them twice per loop on the north side. Might not be ideal for some but I still think IM did a great job keeping the run spectator friendly with all the construction issues. |

Member 347 Scottsdale, AZ | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Anyone else getting burnt out from all this training? I've been doing great up until last week. I had to go on the road for work then was miserable during Saturdays long ride and brick. Was supposed to do a 18 mile run yesterday but sat on the couch and watched football all day instead... Have to get mentally back into it because there's too much training left. Doing the Tempe Tri (Oly) this Saturday which should be some good motivation. |

I should had listened to my body two weeks ago when it was feeling burnt. Since then Ive been failing horribly on my long bike ride every weekend. I quite yesterday at 53 miles, the worst ever. My legs just stopped working at mile 20 and I pushed myself to continue. Good thing my parents house was on the way and I had my dad give me a ride home. Aside from that my swim is butter (I'm a swimmer though) and my run is very strong, but my long bike ride is suffering due to being my last work out of the week. I'm now going to switch my training schedule to where my bike ride will come earlier in the week and end with my run. I did also plan on a mini tapper at the end of the month but I'm going to bump it on to this week. The last thing I want or anyone training is to get hurt due to a fatigued body. Fluky stuff happens. My friend training for a different event got hurt just by warming up. Just listen to your body and rest when you need to. The last thing you need right now is to get hurt with only a couple more weeks to go. OH and Sleep sleep sleep. I'm not sure if you have kids and a wife but everyone should understand by now that you need to rest when you can. Good luck man! |

Felt burnt out yesterday when the alarm went off at 4:00 AM and it was 45 degrees, dark, and windy. Thought to myself, I will just put it off until later in the day knowing full well that there was not going to be anytime later in the day to do it (son's b-day party, family dinner, Tri Club meeting).... So I blew off my 4 hour ride yesterday and I felt like I let myself down. However, today I have a renewed sense of energy and I'm looking forward to some tempo run work at the track (during my son's football practice of course). Two birds with one stone!!

Regular 161 Los Angeles | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Folks - you need to remember that you need to have some easy weeks sprinkled in when your longest ride is 90 minutes or so. I follow the plan when I am building the training hours for 3 weeks, and then have an easy week, and start backup to the levels slightly about where I was 4 weeks ago. I am yet to encountered training related fatigue - even though there's plenty of it induced by stress/work/family related nonsense. |

Just not able to catch up on sleep. The long rides/runs on the weekends and the fatigue/soreness that ensues really makes family time tough. A nap would be nice, but usually I'm just a zombie in the afternoon on saturdays and sundays. But only 6 more weeks of peak training. followed by a 3week taper. It's almost here!!! |

You can beat yourself up finding all the weather patterns you can muster up on the web and by personal experience..... but phoenix is very unpredictable and will change on you depending if you are first or last out of the water. There has been great days... windy days... rainy days... just have to plan on just about anything if you are coming from out of town. |

My legs are tired but still move... the big thing is to keep you mind in the game! You are on the down slope of an amazing journey if this is your first one... and if you have done more than one.... Suck it up and finish strong!!! |

Regular 115 Las Vegas | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread So, has the run course officially been changed to a 2 loop? I was on the race website today and it still shows a 3 loop course. Also where is this hill that people have been talking about? What is the grade and distance on this thing? The run is by far my worst. It really is a walk shuffle thing. Any info would be great thanks. Keep training! |
