Hey everyone, the more involved you are in our forum the more likely you will be successful in your triathlon endeavours...with that said, what will your beer of choice be for new year's eve!

PS: Let see if we can get all 15 people replying even if you are not having a beer!

No beer for me tonight because it's my off day and I only get beer on workout days.  I will hit the store today though to pick something up.  Not sure if we're going to make it to the nice store (with selection) or the crumby one so I'll have to decide when I get there.

Hello Everyone!!!

I had an OK week last week. Mostly just cycling inside. Pool was closed and I am still scared to do too much on my hip so I didn't run. I've been tracking my calories, keeping the amount within range, but not hitting my protein mark or my leafy green stuff requirement. Too many left over were still in the house.

THIS WEEK:

SWIM: The pool re-opens on Wednesday. so, I will be there Wednesday and Saturday. I just started reading “The Triathletes Guide to Swim Training” in my down time. Great tips on form that I am going to have to figure out (push back not down by keeping my elbow up!) Wednesday should be a great day to work on that while I get back into the swing of things. Also I am excited, I found a company that does open water swim clinics. They don't have their 2013 schedule posted yet so I will have to stalk them, because I think that a class like that will really help.

BIKE: I went shopping yesterday and got some toasty cycling pants and a high visibility, weather resistant windbreaker, so I will be going outside this week. Forecast is for cool, but no rain for the week.

RUN: Not sure about this one. I am thinking about an easy mile run on the track tomorrow to see how it goes.

DIET: Keep tracking this week. Special focus on getting my protein in.

Happy New Year Everyone!

OK here are my EVENT GOALS for 2013:

Bay Breeze, Alameda 10K February 16
Marin County Swim 500 m open water swim March 30
HITS Napa Valley SPRINT April 14
Western Pacific, Alameda 10K May 4
California SPRINT, Pleasanton June 29
Summer Breeze Half marathon, San Leandro August 4
Solano Turkey Trot, 5K November
Reindeer Run, 5K December

I don't have any performance context for most of these events since most of the distances are new to me. So right now, I would say it is about finishing, not flair. I did the 5Ks last year. I could easily see some good improvement on those, particularly the Turkey Trot since that was the better of my two races last year. I would be thrilled if I could get my time down, seems likely since I had only just completed the C25K plan Thanksgiving last year.

Thanks for the inspiration everyone!  It was good to start planning this out.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHARLES

I've been trying to force my hand a bit on some bike training.  I really want to make an effort to increase all my training distances this year.  So, I'm considering adding a bike only event to give me something to train towards (run is covered and I'm working on the swim).  Do you think this is insane?  Ultimately, I'd love to have completely half-iron distances in all 3 events by the end of the year so I could be well positioned to do a half-iron next year.

  • January - Training
  • February - Princess HM
  • March - Training
  • April - Diva Tri-a-Tri
  • May - Calgary HM
  • June - Chinook Oly
  • July - Training
  • August - Medio Fondo - 100km (??????)
  • September - December - Training

Now that the baby is older, I'll have a lot more time for training next year so the increased training necessary should be doable.  I figure if I can get my long bike distances to 70km before the Chinook Oly that by mid-August I should be able to get up to 100km.  I'm not currently particularly fast but because they are running a Gran Fondo at the same time, I'd have 8.5 hours to finish the distance and, I'm not THAT slow.

Kim - Your race schedule is well planned and totally doable!  Being able to do a 70km long ride will serve your well when you do your OLY in June.  I think you will find as I did that the riding gets easier the more you ride.  Duh... But what I really mean is that going from 70 to 100 is not as tough as going from 30 to 70... plus, the more you ride, the faster you will get.

Happy New Years all,

I start my official training for Ironman Lake Placid today. Got an hour on the bike but the pool was closed at 5am when I showed up this morning. Wasn't too pleased about that but I will make it up tomorrow.

Plans this week:

                         Run- Half Marathon on Saturday

Swim- at least 2 hours- work on drills, bilateral breathing

Bike- 4 hours- saddle time, saddle time , saddle time- have to get the but used to being on the bike

weight- lose 2lbs - Currently at 297.5 this morning.

Nice job on the training! What is the date on your race?

Thanks, although I have a full schedule everything is geared towards Lake Placid in July. After that just finishing up the year with a local HIM and then to meet up with a friend and do B2B together.

This is my schedule for 2013

06-01-2013 Rev3 Quassy - Olympic Distance- Middlebury, CT

06-02-2013 Rev3 Quassy - Half Iron- Middlebury, CT

06-30-2013 North Country Triathlon - Half Iron Distance- Hauge NY

07-28-2013 Ironman Lake Placid - Lake Placid NY

09-01-2013 Big George Half Ironman- Lake George NY

10-26-2013 Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon- Wilmington NC

that is a a boat load of racing! My wife would kill me if i tried to to do that! Smile

I would be somewhat concerned about injury with so many long races.

Doug: I ditto Thor's concerns about injury.  You've been doing this for a while and know your body and what you're doing.  But be sure to watch out for injury and if you need to - skip a race if you need to).  Question - Is the North COuntry Tri a last tune up for Lake Placid?  I think you mentioned that you were injured last time, really respect the lead up to IMLP to make sure you are fresh and ready to go!

Looks like a plan... I don't remember exactly where you live in Ca - but here is a recommendation for a race next year.  When my wife and I lived out there - the moonlight run was our favorite race.  I miss it - so be sure to check it out.  Here is the info! http://www.paloaltoonline.com/moonlight_run/  They always run it with a full moon.  So cool!

Sorry for the mega posts!  Last one for a while I promise.

Got in a yoga class this morning.  It was slow flow and I didn't like it as much as I thought I would... I had imagined that we would be holding the stretches for longer but that really wasn't the case.  I'm looking for a yoga class where I could build muscle and stretch a ton to avoid injury.  Any suggestions?  I will tell you one this - my shouldiers are getting a massive workout.  Hopefully that will help in the pool.

My mom gave me a hundred bucks to use to buy a wet suit.  Any suggestions on a wetsuit that I could get on sale for less than 200 that would get me through the next 2 our three years.  I don't need anything special.  Just looking to get something functional without spending a ton.

My beer of choice this evening Walker Reserved Wooley Jack Rye... I might also throw a fruit beer in there just to make sure no one touches my beer Laughing

Have a good afternoon/evening everyone!

I personally love the P90x yoga routine - it was brutal the first few times I did it, and I still try to work it in, and I grumble at myself when I skip it.  You can probably borrow or pirate a copy, or find a youtube video for free, to get a taste of it.  The P90x routine is basically two segements - a 45min ashtanga style, full of moving vinyasas (think "slow, complicated pushups"), and 45min of stretching and balance, plus some ab and core work.

You're probably looking for something in the Ashtanga style.  "Hatha" yoga is a generic term, and can mean just about anything.

I bought the one on this sight at 55% off using the BT code.  I think it was regularly a $440 suit and I picked it up for about $210 or so.  It's the Xterra one on the top of the page all the time, you know, the one with the hadsome gentleman in it.

Going to a friends for New Years, so I'm not sure what kind of beer there will be. Thought about going to the LCBO, but after the gong show I witnessed there on Christmas Eve I decided to pass and leave it to fate to decide what I was drinking tonight.

Hope you all have a great last night of 2012!

Cheers!!!

Our local tri-store has wetsuits on sale 40% off (clearing out old inventory).  I got my husband a former rental for Christmas (before I knew all the new stuff would go on sale) and I got a Zoot Prophet.  Maybe you can find a similar sale?  Mine was $200 after all the various discounts I managed to snag.

Yes the Hague is last tune up for Lake Placid. It is the same weekend as the Tinman in Tupper Lake. I blew out a sidewall on my front tire and went down pretty hard with only some abrasions. DNF'd as I had no spare tire.

I understand the concerns about injuries but this will require less running than my normal marathon training.
