How do tri shorts differ from bike shorts? When I look at them online there does not seem to be much difference.

There is a big difference!  And it's all in the padding.  Tri shorts have a very thin pad.  You can swim in them, bike and then run comfortably in them.  Bike shorts when wet get bigger and feel huge when you are running.

Thanks, that is good to know. Am going to try to find a store in the area that sells them so I can get a good idea of what I would want. I don't like tops that expose the waist (my days of two piece bathing suits are long gone) so I would want a top that is a little longer than what I have been seeing online. Any suggestions?

Hi Kendra!  Check out this site: http://www.teamestrogen.com/  All women's stuff!  They did seem to have some longer tanks.

Also there is a store called all3sports somewhere in GA.....I just don't know where.  And it's all triathlon related stuff.

You could also consider wearing a bike jersey for your race.  As long as you don't run with a bunch of stuff in the pockets!

All things brings up a good point....people often ask what they should wear on the swim.  When I first started, I wore a sports bra under my wetsuit and then put on a shirt at T1.  Now I wear a tri top that has pockets and tri shorts.  It gets wet on the swim, but dries fast during the bike....if it's chilly, it's not fun, but usually you are working hard enough that you will be fine.  And of course I wear the same thing for the run.  There are not changing tents for races other than Ironman races....and no nakedness allowed in the transition area (though I have seen people do that!).

Hey everyone,

So my year keeps getting crazier. My husband and I signed up for the calistoga to santa cruz relay run. It's something like 250 miles in 2 days with a team of 12 people. Then I finally asked when it was??? And it happens to be 2 weeks after my 1/2 mary. Cathy - will 2 weeks be enough rest in between races? I'm not planning on going "all out" on the 1/2 mary. I'm running it with some friends and we're planning on just enjoying the view and chatting it up.

Then, I'm signing up for the Tour de Cure. It a fundraising bike event for diabetes. My company is the main sponsor and it's on my son's 1st B-Day. We decided rather than have a party, we'd bring his 1st b-day to the great outside and we'll bike! It's only a 25K and I've been promised it's all flat. My husband and I will be riding our schwinn cruisers with Drew on the back. It should be a fun day!

So , my husband asked me not to sign up for any other events this year. But I'm still going to do the Angel Island run this weekend anyhow, I'm thinking of it as more of a training run than an event

Hope eneryone's training is going good and that spring it starting to come!

Kaci

Kaci,

I almost fell of my chair when i saw 250 miles in two days... But then I saw the relay word :-

I think two weeks is plenty of time to recover.

I agree with Z, you will be fine after 2 weeks for sure.  And it will keep you motivated to keep running

When is the Tour de Cure?  LOL, I am doing an oly race on my son's first birthday, 7/22!

What is the Angel Island Run?

The Tour de Cure is June 10th. We are hoping a small group of people will show up and ride with us. It'll be interesting to see how Drew does with a helmet on for 25K. He's just gotten into the phase of taking hats off.

The Angel Island run is a 7.5 mile run around Angel Island - one of the Islands in the SF Bay. No jog strollers allowed for this race It should be a fun run, if the weather holds out here! I'm worried our "spring " will disappear. It always does in march - we get rain and rain and rain until May. I still need to sign up for the run - I think I'll wait until this Wed. - no need to rush into anything!

Oh Cathy it was 36 degrees here when I went to swim! I was frozen. We had great weather earlier this week-80-85 degrees!

We swam 4700 yards this morning = about 200 laps.

I am gonna be sore. I have basically been spinning and swimming not running that much because every time I run I have terrible hip pain. I am chicken to go to the dr. I think I may just be too old to start running now!!!! Or my thoery is that I still need to lose 25 lbs. So I may end up walk/jogging that part of the tri.

I was supposed to road bike with a group in the AM but I will not be going if it is 36 degrees. I will wail until it warms up a bit. I will ride on the trainer tommorow.

Hope you all are doing well!

Heather

Hello Girls!

I finally made it to a doctor to check on my knee. I got  " patellar tendonitis" diagnoses. So any up motion gives me jolt of pain in my knee. I have a small race to do next Sunday. What should i do?

 Cathy, how was your speech?

Thanks Cathy! But we didn't do the race and decided to do a 8 mile trail run instead. And..... we took the wrong turn and did an elevation gain of 2000ft - YIKES!! We hiked most of the hills (very steep) and it turned out to be a 2+ hr run. We were trying to not take all morning for a run - yeah right!! LOL. I am going to be one sore girl this weekend - where's the beer??

Hope everyone has a great St Patty's Day!

Zoya- sorry about your knee - wish I had some advice for you.

Kendra - only one week before your mary in NY, right? So exciting!!

Survived St. Paddys day intact. Took a hike with the grandkids and then had a housefull for game night. Fun fun fun.

Glad my 1/2 mary wasn't this past weekend in NY. The flight would have never made it into the airport. Le's hope next weekend is much better. I am heading to NY today for a meeting tomorrow though.

I think I have a small tear in my left hamstring. At least according to all the research I have done, that would explain the pain in the back of my left knee. Hoping with a little RICE it will heal up on it's own without having to visit the Dr. We shall see after the 1/2 mary next week.

Gottta run to the airport. Have a great Sunday everyone.

Hi everyone!  It was absolutely beautiful here, so I went out for a long bike ride with 2 other BTers.  Yesterday we had a St. Patrick's Day party with 50 people!  Now I am exhausted.

Heather - it's ok to walk and jog in your tri!  Whatever works so that you can finish and not be in agony!

Z-what a bummer about the knee!  Does it bother you to bike or swim?  I'd suggest trying to keep up with whatever activity feels ok, but back off on anything that bothers it.  I think you'll have to be in a "wait and see" pattern until Sunday

Kaci - I still can't get over you doing a run with that much climbing!  ouch!

Kendra - have a safe trip!  How did you injure the hammy?

I can't wait to hear about these races you all have planned this weekend!  Woo hoo!

We are back from vacation and trying to adjust to being back in the real world. Getting everyone up and out the door this morning was tough as this was the first day since day light savings time that the kids had to be at school. We had a great vacation in Colorado, but didn't end up skiing. I actually got lots of exercise though as we snowshoed and I ran three times on vacation! Now I am trying to gear up my training as my first Oly tri is April 22nd. That is my next race on the agenda, unless I decide to do a 5k this weekend! Hope everyone's training is going well and thanks for letting me join in your group.

Zoya, Sorry about your knee, that stinks. Is there anything the Dr can do to help it?

Kendra, Good luck on your race! It sounds like you're going to have a lot of fun!

Kaci, Wow, 2 hrs & 2000ft, you must be so sore. Hope the beers helped the healing.

Jill, Glad to hear you had a fun vacation.

Heather, I sent you a pm, I'm not sure if you got it or not. I talked to the lady in charge of the outdoor rides. I asked her if you had to be a member of our Y and she said no that anyone can come join. They are starting next Wed. 28th at 5:30 and meeting at the Steele Creek Y (in Ayrsley). Also the tri training group are doing rides meeting at the Gold Hill Y in Ft Mill on Sat. at 8:30. We were going to go this past Sat but it was too cold.

Cathy, I had my fitting for my bike on Fri. He thought it would be better if he left the clips on and I use my bike shoes on the spin bike to get adjusted to them. Everything looks good. I was going to ride with my tri group on Sat but it was cancelled. My dh left Sunday to go to a conference in FL so I haven't had a chance to ride my bike yet.

I'm getting back on track with my training. Everybody's finally healthy! I went to a spin class then got on the treadmill and ran. Tomorrow we have tri training group and we have a swim instructor that is going to be looking at everyone's stroke and we are going to be doing drills too.

Hope everyone has a good week!

Mel

Wow, everyone is busy training. Don't you wonder what you used to do to keep busy before all this training took over our lives?

New York this past weekend was cold. Flying in you could see the snow on the ground, even in the failing light. The flight was delayed for an hour and we did not arrive in NY until 8pm. It is supposed to be warmer up there this weekend for the 1/2 mary, in the 50's. We are ready and raring to go.

Cathy, the knee has been bothering me for some time. Not enough to have to stop doing things, but definately there and making it hard to bend. So, not a clue as to what may have done the actual damage. I was chalking it up to age, until I realized that it was more than just stiff. I'll see how it does this weekend.

We are going to take in a Broadway Play on Friday night, have the pasta dinner on Saturday night, 1/2 mary on Sunday, visit Ground Zero on Monday, and who knows what else to fill in all the time. The one non-walker is busy planning places and things for us to do.

Good luck Kendra!

I'm going to do biking and swimming this week. I biked yesterday and it did not bother my knee. The run portion of my race on Sunfay is only 1.4 mile so I can definitely handle it even with pain in my knee.

I'm glad everybody is doing well.
