Subject: RE: PeterAK's Group: THIS TREEHOUSE IS FULL!!! PeterAK - 2008-01-31 2:31 PM Hey Gang! Finally got a good night sleep last night. Getting a workout in definately helps with that. Looking forward to some time on the computrainer tonight, and I stopped to pick up some Perpetuem for the workout so I can stop using the Gatorade powder that I've been using this winter. I know it's only Thursday, but what does everyone have on deck for the weekend? Friday - if I can wake up early enough I might try a swim before I venture out and do some old fashion door to door resume submissions. Saturday - not sure yet - 3 mile run on the schedule so I will most likely stretch it out longer if I feel up to it. Sunday - 5 miler on schedule. |

Regular 54 | Subject: RE: PeterAK's Group: THIS TREEHOUSE IS FULL!!! Just got the all clear from an orthopedist. After very thorough checks of my shoulders, it appears to be garden variety tendonitis. I am *very* relieved to be "a boring patient" to a surgeon. He didn't say that, very good doc, I just felt silly seeing all the other patients. I'll have a couple PT sessions to find strengthening exercises I can do, and that's about it. Wooo! I went to a "beginner triathlete" club meeting last night. They seem like very nice people, and I'm sure they'll be very successful, but while they're beginning triathletes, they're established athletes already in my opinion. Several are marathon runners, and the others are at least half. I thought I'd thicken my skin and tough it out, just for the socialization, but when I mentioned to the leader my dreadfully slow run times, he said, "Don't worry, we'll start out with six mile runs at a 10 min/mile pace and work on speed from there." Right. I'm not capable of *either* of those "Beginning" points. I'll be petty and admit I felt a certain satisfaction that they're all dreading the swim. For a few, even putting their face in the water is a challenge. I was kind of discouraged when I got home, but then I realized, I WILL finish. It will take me a lot longer, but I'll get there all the same. I'm kinda bummed I'll have to continue on alone, but I'm slow, and that's just the way it is for now. edit: Eeek, thank you Dave. that was really disrespectful of me to say "alone"! I've received incredible encouragement for the folks here. I thought it would be fun to have people in my local area to train and visit with, and so I could quit talking my poor partner's ear off about this work-out and that race. You're absolutely right. I have an excellent support group here. I wouldn't dare say anything different! Edited by Tautery 2008-02-01 10:46 AM |

I struggle with the run as well - we can struggle together! I train entirely by myself, but through a few good BT Pals I get the motivation and support I need. Hang in there!

Don't put so much weight in the comments of one person. You need to worry only about you. Even if you never find yourself on a podium, if you finish the race, you are a triathlete. In my mind, that's all that matters! |

Elite 3491 In The Peleton | Subject: RE: PeterAK's Group: THIS TREEHOUSE IS FULL!!! Had a breakthrough ride (I hope!) on the computrainer last night. Finally put some good watts up and felt great doing it. Legs feel no worse for the wear today so that's pretty exciting. Monday I start the BT HIM plan with 20 weeks to go to High Cliff. Lots of work to do and I'm excited to get back to business. Going to bust out of the office for a 30 minute swim this afternoon, ride tomorrow, run Sunday. I'm excited because I finally feel like it's (early) tri season! |

Extreme Veteran 494 West Chicago | Subject: RE: PeterAK's Group: THIS TREEHOUSE IS FULL!!! I've read the maxims about increasing no more than 5-10% in terms of either distance, time, or intensity. While that is all well and good - at what point do you say - lets see what this engine can do? I was on the dread mill and have been gradually increasing my basic pace this off season but when do you decide to push and see what you can really do - i mean at some level it becomes what is the point of discomfort I can tolerate for "long" time .. "Hey lets try this pace and see if I can really do it" - _ Wow I can? - while I am still every slow - I pushed it a bit this weekend and felt OK. How often do you do this or is it better to just slowly ratchet up the distance, time, or intensity. |

Elite 3491 In The Peleton | Subject: RE: PeterAK's Group: THIS TREEHOUSE IS FULL!!! Dave, of the three sports, running is the one where the 10% / week guideline is most important. While a triathlete's cardiovascular system develops a solid base from hours spent training in all three sports, run specific muscles and soft tissues will not build up to match aerobic fitness as quickly as we may like. If you want to increase intensity or hours sooner do it with the bike or swim and be patient with the run. Let all the systems of your body acclimate slowly or you will significantly increase the likelihood of injury! Below I pasted your 2007 year in review as it gives a good big picture perspective to analyze this question with. With the exception of September to November, 2007 was pretty consistent for run minutes/miles, and it looks like you have increased a bit for the last two months. I think you can continue increaseing mileage and/or intensity but be careful to stick to 10% a week. I'm not big on speed work and my fastest runs are always on race day. This works for me, but there are plenty of other athletes of my ability or better who think intervals etc. are an important part of training.
It's a good thing that you are feeling the urge to push it!

Elite 3491 In The Peleton | Subject: RE: PeterAK's Group: THIS TREEHOUSE IS FULL!!! It's a snow day in Milwaukee! Even the malls are closed. Crazy. I may go to the office for a while this afternoon but not sure. Right now Lori is making me watch The View. At least Fergie is on and I like her... Going to be doing plenty of shoveling later today. Hoping we can still make it to our scheduled meeting with a caterer at 6:30 in West Bend (daspanglers' stompin' grounds) but it's a 30 mile or so drive so we'll see what things are like later. Had a great workout last night at the DTC. Rode a tough course that was lots of climbing but not much descending so the avg speed was something like 12 mpg in spite of averaging 225 watts! Going to put on the heavy Red Wing boots and walk to the bank to deposit some checks later. That will probably be it for workouts today. Running with our very own Force tomorrow evening! |

Dude - let me know the next time you're in town! I'll take you over to the Riverside Brewery. Tammy would probably even join us! 6:30? I was probably out in my driveway piling snow above my head! What caterer are you using? |
