i tried to get the VIP at IMFL last year and there was no such thing. I suspect its the same thing at IMCDA. it may be circumscribed to IMAZ only. what a great thing to do for the sherpas though!



That is funny. I remember seeing a few athletes coming through the tent and they even had a bike rack for when we got our gear out of transition. Seemed like a very good idea but not many opted for this.

I think I might look up the folks that set it up and see if they are doing CdA. I know they did one at IMCal earlier this year but did not have anyone on the course for that one. (Just folks from the Tri club at a party house on the course)

The playground in the park is an awesome distraction for families as well as the lake assuming the weather is reasonable.

OMG that taper insanity is in full swing I have been trying to schedule dates with my friends to go see movies and catch up with people that I have not really seen in a while!

I am going to wear my Zensah's during the bike and then my CEPs on the run.  My only fear is that in my attempt to get the CEPs on (suckers are TIGHT) my legs are going to cramp up and I'll be on the floor of the T2 changing tent crying like a baby..

Why not wear them on the swim and then just hit the bike?

cool honey badger shirts! tough to explain the in-joke though haha

as to the CEP in the swim, they have the calf sleeve that they recommend be worn no more than 2 hour racing time, but BryanCD qualified for Kona at IMAZ 09 wearing the sleeves all day. I know lots of folks that train in thme for 7 plus hours. you can swim with them under your wetsuit. i just wouldnt want the socks to be sopping wet in the foot area as i started the bike. thats why i throw them on in t1.

truth be told, we had an expert on my mentor thread (orthopedic surgeon) who basically said any benefits to compression during activity was psychological only and if there was physiological/performance benefit, it was only proven to be for those who were venous incompetent or pregnant women or something like that. nerdjock can clarify.

he was big time supporter of compression for recovery but thought ice and elevation were better options on their own merit.

One other point mr. expert made, many people may be venous incompetent and not even know it...especially if they were overweight at some point.  Thus, if you like 'em, wear 'em.  You may have a physiological benefit without knowing that you needed one.  I wear them for recovery and definitely notice a difference.

i dont take proactive otc meds and would not recommend doing anything you havent practiced but I do carry tums in special needs. i can see other meds in there too.

I had a similar question.  I've been taking Aleve everyday (per doctor's orders) to keep inflammation at bay in my knee/leg.  Seems to be working, but I'm unsure if I should take it on race day.  Seems there is some evidence that NSAIDS and endurance events don't mix due to an increased risk of hyponatremia.  Correct me if I'm wrong.

Never tried any of the GI meds though, so no advice to give there.

I'm renting one of those My Athlete Live GPS trackers now too.  I thought that's kinda cool, but not necessary.  When I mentioned it to my husband he was like 'Yes! Rent the damn thing."  I guess running around on race day guessing where your athlete maybe gets a bit frustrating. The funny thing is that this year our rental is in a good spot on the bike and run course so I bet they never leave after coming back from watching the swim start.  They will be the obnoxious people out around mile 5 or 6 just before bennet bay on CDA lake drive drinking very good beer and ringing cow bells.  If you look at the beer too long they will offer you some (it won't be defizzed ).


I got one of those last year for Kentucky and will do it again for CdA. Really nice for people following you around the course, plus folks watching online back home.

Yup, the connection between "Vitamin I" and Hypoatremia has been pretty much established for endurance events. Lucky for us a bunch of ultra runners did an experiment a few years ago and provided a great test case for this. 

As for GI meds, many of them like Imodium contain narcotics. Do what you feel comfortable with but it won't be something I will be doing. I have my pitstops quite practiced so I no longer worry about it.

The medical director at the athlete dinner speaks and the first thing he said at both dinners for both IMs I did was not to take Ibuprofen pre-race or during the race. Claims it was like twisting up your kidneys like you are wringing out a sponge. EEEK!

And nerdjock failed to mention that the good doctor on our mentor thread called me venous imcompetent in a nice way because I seemingly ran and biked faster with my compression socks. I almost changed my name from phatknot to venous incompetent after that. haha!

Bike dropped off today.  Am I ready?  Man I should have pushed those intervals more - damn hills to come!  WHy did I miss those work outs - seems like it was due to work or family activities - but now I just see the missed work outs.  It is for real now.  Calm.
