Ok real question.

I have a 1/2 Iron this weekend. And then IM end of Aug. Only 2 races left.

A girl on my team offered her 404 and 808 for me to use in both the races. And training rides, etc.

They are tubular. I have no clue how to change one right now.

I did buy the Reynolds 32mm clinchers and use them currently.

On one hand I think they would be great to use. I would be sooooo super fast on them.

But, I think I would always be thinking in the back of my head, "please don't flat" and "please don't crash and wreck Tara's wheels."

What are your thoughts on using them?

YouTube for fixing instructions?! If it were me, I might forego them for this weekend's race unless you get a chance to ride them this week. But I think it'd be cool to use them for your next long training ride then make a decision based on that. Lucky you! Already fast, now Super Fast!

62 days from right now you may find yourself on the side of richter pass with a flat.  whatcha gonna do?

i agree with kim on scratching them for this weekend but using the remaining long rides.  youtube is a good idea but you can't just watch the video's,  you need change one several times (or blow though some cans of pit stop i guess) so you are confident going into taper and on raceday.  is that possible?  if yes then go for it.  if not then heck no!

you're not gonna wreck her wheels, but again if this something you might think about even a little more than a little than i'd say no.  the mental side of ironman simply cannot be overstated.  control what YOU can, trev.  this includes confidence in handling what goes on if you flat.

oh, a can of pit stop will add ~15 grams of weight to the tire so you should take that into account when calculating your super fastness.

John and Matt - How old are your kids that are learning to ride without training wheels?  I have been working on my recently turned 5 year old and he seems to want no part of it.  Not sure if I should push him a little more or let him tell me when he is ready.

edit - for some reason, I can't see Matts pic on either my home computer or my work computer.  Saw the vids though and they are great!

My daughter will be 4 next week.  We got her a balance bike for her 2nd birthday, but she was really closer to three before she started riding it well.  Getting them on a bike where they can learn balance is the key, pedaling is the easy part.  She'd rip around on the balance bike and coast for a long way without putting her feet down.  She took right to the pedal bike and it's small enough she can put her feet down if she needs to.  I feel like training wheels actually make it more difficult to learn to ride.

Congrats!!!! You think you're tired now

Congratulations  - being a dad is awesome, by far my favorite title.

And don't worry about thinking you're tired... pretty soon you'll be too tired to think even think about how tired you are.  See you in 13 months

I would go with the 404's... However I would only race with them.  I wouldn't train with them.  We biked part of Canada this weekend (Yellow Lake had construction) and the winds were pretty tough... 808 maybe over kill coming down the backside of Yellow Lake.

As for getting a flat... Have the shop give you instructions.

I raced IMWI on borrowed tubulars.  I DID worry the whole race - I had no clue how to change them.  I carried a tire, so I would have just waited for Sag.  I was also worried about damaging them - but not so much.  They're Jeff's.  Innocent   He borried a friend's Zipps.....had the tire replaced on Thurs by the IM mechanics, and flatted.  Cost him 20 minutes - they were very well glued!  Odds are against that happening, but it could - and John's right about the mental part.  If you haven't changed them, don't race in them.

Steve's got a point, too.  If it's gonna be windy, the 808 may be too much.  I think most people that race on them make it a race day decision.....

All said and done.....you're already fast!!

Race report is up!! I'll be writing another version (really, elaborating on this one) for my own life and for my FB friends, etc., with a little more of a personal touch, but this one is the down-and-dirty details.

Help me!!  I am totally freaking out!!  I have 2 months until Louisville.  I had a disaster of a half this past weekend.  I was really hoping it would be a confidence booster, instead it shattered any belief I had left that I could do this.  I go back and forth between crying and feeling so sick to my stomach that I can't eat.  I know in my head that it is just a race and not the end of the world but I want to prove to myself that I can do this.  I didn't feel this freaked out when I had my children.

looks like you picked a really tough race rachel, nothing wrong with that!  but to kinda put things into perspective only one person broke three hours on the bike.  your swim was a few minutes faster than what you have in your logs. keep these things in mind!

Yes, try to take a deep breath and try to think about it in terms of what you can work on. I've had race disasters, too, and while they're really disappointing, they're also good learning experiences. Deep breath! It's going to be okay!

I'll be there to take your swim drop off bag and calm you down before you hit the water .... Suzy usually is in a zone before the swim and wants to be left alone.  And then I will see you on the run in front of the Student Union with my cowbell screaming my head off at you......

You'll do great, we will make sure of that!!

You guys always know how to make me feel better.  I will be looking for you, Dino!

Rachel-oh, girl, I feel for you.  Breathe and remember that crap happens, better to happen now and learn from it.  I think your HIM swim time was faster than my Oly time, and you don't see me freaking out (yet!)...seriously, John is so right, you picked a really hard course for your HIM, and it looks like it is a very different type of course from IMKY.

You have 2 months, really focus on your long rides, try to do routes that sort of simulate the IMKY course if possible.  It is not necessary to do harder than that, at this point your endurance is the number one thing to focus on.

This is not the time to freak out, this is the time to take your medicine like the strong athlete that you are and focus, focus, focus.  You can do this.  Let us know how we can help.

We've had some super duper results from the MG the last few weeks, PRs and podiums galore.  Who's ready to be added to that list?  Racing? spill it!!

If you're not racing, what's up for the July 4th weekend?
