Happy Saturday!  Eric and Betsy, congratulations!!!! Great pics and look forward to seeing more from Hawaii.

I've had an interesting few days.  My 14 yo niece has been with me while her mom and older brother are doing college visits.  If I could log shopping as a workout, my totals would be sky high.

Tomorrow I toe up to the start of the first half mary in almost a year.   Yeah ART!

Hope everyone has a good weekend of training/racing.

OK here is the public invite for all the group. The wife and I will be heading back to New Braunsfels to do some tubing again. This was great fun last year as we met up with the vDs. Eric stole beers and almost got me arested. We will be tubing Saturday August 14th. We will be floating the same place we did last year I dont remember the name but EvD will remind me. Hopefully most of you can make it. As we get closer I will finalize the times and what nots.

Yes I did finish and James ran with me and was extremely encouraging the entire time  And I beat my time from when I ran this race freshmen year by over ten minutes so it had its good points even if I was disappointed in my time

Evening MG peeps.  I had a decent half yesterday. My time was short of my goal, but a porta-potty stop was a good bit of that. Actually, given that I'd registered for and begun training for 2 other halfs in the last 6 months and never made it to the starting line due to injuries, just getting there was great for me.  My splits for miles 1- 5 and 6-10 weren't bad.  About 20 secs apart.  I totally fell apart on the last 3 miles and walked a lot.  Admittedly, I never ran more than 10.5 in my training.  My legs were ok last night but are a bit tight/sore this evening.

Here is my question:  There is a local half in 4 weeks that looks like fun.  I can almost walk to the start.  It's flat and a double 6.55m loop, so I can bail at the halfway point if I'm not up to it. What should I do about my long runs?  Start next weekend at 13/14 and build or back off and keep them a bit shorter?  I've been following the Hal Higdon Novice plan.  Two or three shorter runs during the week, cross training, and a long run on the weekend.

I'm comfortable with my BOP status but want to keep challenging myself while staying injury free.  Also, my races this year are all sprints/oly's but hope to make it to the Marine Corps Mary in October.

Appreciate your thoughts.

I don't have a good answer to your question, so instead I will just say congrats on the race!  Getting through your injuries and to the starting line is a great triumph... one I hope to echo shortly.

If you havent built up to doing 13/14 for your long runs I wouldnt start now. Too big of a jump and you want to make it to the start line.  If it is just a fun looking race why not build up and make the race your long run for the week?

Since you have 4 weeks do LRs of 7, 9, 11 then 13/race then a  rest week. Since you just raced your legs/knee might need a little easier week this week.

Not an expert here but I also agree.
When coming off my injury and getting ready for the Oly I just did Eric suggested I keep my runs short to avoid injury.  He felt the benefit of going longer didn't outweigh the risk.

Emma - You should be very proud of your race!  Going that much faster than your Freshman year is a huge accomplishment!

KimC ~ I am not the type to tell you to not do a race.  If you wanna do it, then do it...just know your performance may not be what you want if that is what you are looking to gauge.  However, if you just wanna go out have fun, get in a good run, then I say go for it.

Everyone is a little different, but with you just finishing 13.1 and having a long run of 10.5 in recent weeks, you can build up to 14 by week 3.  I would go easy this week, long run only being in the 6-7 range. Next week extend that to 9-10 and the third week move the mark out to 13-14.

(I agree with Todd's recomendations for distance... falls back on my thinking of not having to run the distance or farther before the race)

I am not an advocate for running the actual distance (or longer) of a race before a race. (at an elite level or a higher based performance level that philosophy would change)  But at our level, that is what I believe.

FWIW - My long run for the upcoming 70.3 is only 8 miles, I would have liked for it to have been 10, but I never had it in the plan to run 13 or 14.  I have ran 4 marathons (not counting the IM) and the longest I have ever ran is 18.6 miles, and I think I have respectable finish times in doing so. (4:28, 3:44. 3:28) - in 2005 I ran the marathon without training and my longest run before that race was a 20K (12.4 miles) in Oct 2004. Between Nov & Jan I ran once for 3.1 miles and still managed to finish in 5:23.  The hiccup there was in the POST-RACE... the training lends to much quicker recovery, and it took me a loooong time to recover from that insanity.

SOOO, the jist is simply... I think you can safely build up to that race in four weeks coming off of the base you had for this event.  Would it be wise to expect a PR performance? more than likely not, but hey things come into alignment and voila...  Just listen to your body, stay in tuned with its feel and don't push the volume and intensity too far above the 10% rule.  Mix in recovery time, stretching and icing.  Best of luck and I hope this provides some insight.

It sure is quiet around here.

Ken and both our boys will be doing the Race for the Penant 5K.  I did it with Ken and Brendan (15) last year and had a good time but this year Cory (17) expressed interest so I'm going to hang with the girls while the boys race.  Anytime Cory expresses an interest in any form of exercise we have to encourage it!!!  So the girls and I will hang back and then we will run the 1 mile fun run after the guys get back from the 5K.  Really looking forward to it!

Ken and I also signed up for a tri relay to do with Brendan.  I will swim, Ken will bike and Brendan will run.  This is the only way I will be guaranteed food at a race!  LOL  I'm so darn slow it's usually gone by the time I finish.  Love that the whole family is getting involved.  Now if we could only get Lilia (3) a good fit on a tri bike (with training wheels of course) we'd be all set!  LOL

That is pretty awesome you got the family going on it. The wife has a bike that collects dust. She has until this year to race it or I sell it + mine for an upgrade. I am torn on which way I want that to turn out.

It is quiet in here lately... we're getting so close to the big race this weekend I thought that we would be drowning in smack talk by now.

As of today I am officially released to go back to any activity that I did prior surgery.  That means sex.  Oh, and weight lifting is back on the schedule too.   So I'm a pretty happy camper today.

This is sort of a re-post from my TL, but husband has decided that he wants to do P90x and ordered all the stuff this past weekend.  We should have it by Friday and he wants to get going this weekend.  I think I'm going to do it with him #1 for support and #2 because I am the suck at strength training, so anything that makes me do more of it is a good thing.

That said, it's a safe bet that I'm going to start doing a.m. swim/bike/run workouts to ensure that I'm getting some tri training in.  Because my goal is to do a few races near the end of the season.  FL is actually chock full of Tri's in the October/November time frame, so I'm going to get back in shape to do a few by then for sure.

Kim- I think what other's have said about the upcoming race sounds right (from my limited knowledge anyway )  I would do it if I were you, just go out and have fun and don't worry about the time!

Keri-  I think it's awesome you have your whole family into racing.  I hope whenever I have my own family we do this too.

As for me, I have a couple papers taking up way too much of my time right now.  One's my marketing research paper which should be really easy to write if I can just find my motivation for school work.  I seem to have misplaced it again.  Getting a run or maybe some elliptical time in after class, it all depends on the rain.  It's supposed to be pouring rain all afternoon and I'm just not all that in love with running in that kind of weather.  I'm trying to get James to come swim with me Friday morning.  I have him halfway talked into it so keep your fingers crossed.  I am also working on getting him into triathlons which may be easier after i do my first one because he's extremely competitive with me and I know he'll want to prove he can beat me He's already said he's going to start running again during the summer and seems really into biking ever since he bought me my bike.

Hope everyone's having a happy Tuesday!!

Hey Todd ~ you don't need to upgrade... if you do, that will essentially force me to upgrade, and I don't wanna drop the pinche dinero on that any time soon!

Nicole ~ I am glad you have been released to partake in the activities you so enjoy.... namely, .... nevermind you know which one! Embarassed   Ha Ha!  I have heard great things about the P90X thang... my sister has done it and seen some great results.  I have done the Ab Ripper and holy cow it is a killer workout...

KK & company... congrats on the family involvement.  It is fun to get everyone involved and have them get a taste of accomplishment that you have enjoyed in this sport.

smack talk....  I am confident in my abilities, but there are so many factors that you can't control I am uncertain as to what the outcome on Sunday will be.  If I can replicate my swim and bike from IMFL last Nov. and run like I know I can... Sunday will be a great day!

Fatty is due for a great race and I really hope he has one.  Justine has logged some great consistent training and I hope he too enjoys a strong performance.  So smack talk... as entertaining as it is... I will offer my support and gracious hopes for awesome races for them instead...     gawd I am getting soft in my old age... HA!  Both of y'all can suck it! I am gonna crush your dreams!!!  LOL!  There is that better!?!
