Last workout before my race is in the books. Short bike this morning and a swim this afternoon. This week was peak week in my Oly training plan and I just didn't hit all of the workouts. I think it was having to reorganize everything to make room for my race on Saturday. I'm very Type A, so little disruptions like this are hard for me to adjust to. Oh well--move on and up, right?

Tonight is packing, tomorrow is travel and rest, Saturday is s/b/r!! Tongue in cheek goal is to beat my sister, which is going to be a stretch, because she is a fast runner and I am not. I have her in the swim and bike though, so it could be neck and neck! Concrete goal is to beat my time from last year--by a lot!

Gretchen, you have been killing the workouts.  A missed workout or two will not sabotage your efforts. Enjoy the race and crush last year's time!

Grethen go kill this thing this weekend!

John- I am doing the Disney wine and dine and the Dopey this year. I think I'm going to try to do princess and tinkerbell next year or the following. We did star wars this year so I'll get my coast to coast medal.

Welcome Robbie

man you miss a few days and you are waaaay behind.

training is OK this week has been challenging with work. have missed a few workouts and cut a few short, but I will get in my long bike tomorrow and long run sat. I always let the fear demon in when I feel like my training is falling off. I really do not want to DNF this thing.

I am switching my bike nutrition to solid food. I'm going to take PB sandwiches (1/2's) and cliff bars with a pack of cliff blox and a banana. Doing nuun and salt in my bottles. The sport drink was making me feel bloated and full but hungry. Doing 4hrs on bike with a 45 min run tomorrow. Calling for thunderstorms so it may be a trainer ride and wet run.

Thanks! I also ran into thunderstorms this evening in the pool. They were hovering over us and the lightning started. The storm would not move and we kept waiting. Only got in a short 175m before it started. A couch to 5k session tomorrow morning for me. 15 run/15 walk. Can't wait!

Welcome Robbie!! I love what you're doing and it's an inspiration!!

Writing from camp - finally got the bats out (knock on wood!). Got a nice 17 mile ride in today (starts off all uphill). I hope to run in the morning and swim in the lake tomorrow afternoon. Rest Saturday while I "virtually" cheer on Gretchen (rock it girl!!) and my Oly is Sunday. I'm nervous about the run but will roll with it. I haven't been doing an Oly specific plan - just my HIM plan and decided to have this be my long weekend workout so we shall see how it goes. I feel like I should be prepared but I always feel like I haven't been swimming enough recently (granted we're on vacation and went camping and are now at camp so opportunity isn't always there as much). I've got some Switchback and Heady Topper waiting for me when I get back to camp post-race. ??
Cheers and happy training!!

OK - I'm off to the bike shop to get my rear tire either fixed or replaced. Ugh - such a pain in the @55!

Here's my question for the group. I'm an all or nothing guy but I've been thinking that my all or nothing attitude is currently hurting my training. For example - I've been trying to lose 2 pounds per week with the hopes that it will help improve my bike speed. But I'm stuck in a rut where I haven't lost a pound in almost 3 weeks despite working out nearly 10 hours per week and eating like a champ. Plus - others have told me that my diet is probably hurting my training and I would tend to agree. So I need to figure this out.

But back to my question - what is a middle of the road bike speed? Right now - 16 mph is my max for 25 miles. But this seems slow to me but maybe my brain doesn't have it right. So what is the biking equivalent of a 8 minute mile? I want to become a middle of the pack athlete - right now, I'm bringing up the rear. So maybe I should change my goals to finish smack dab in the 50% percentile. But what is average when it comes to bike speed in a HIM?

I know the weight loss will help more in the run than on the bike. Yes the pros like Alan are muscular twigs but for the rest of us, the extra weight carrying you down hills can sort of even out where it may have cost you on the flats. With the run though it's a whole different story. I've heard that every 10 lbs you lose is an extra 30sec/mile, and while I doubt that is scientifically verifiable, I've seen major improvements in my run speed this year and the only major differences are my training regimen (the Galloway run-walk) and my weight loss.

Having done exactly one Sprint tri, I can't really speak to how to get to MOP in an HIM. :D And also not having done a road ride longer than 15 miles, I can't speak to average speed over that distance. I did half that distance last night in my mock tri, and averaged over 20mph, much faster than my 18.7 at my sprint a couple weeks back. One was much smaller hills on this one, and two was cadence. I've taken the cadence advice to heart and when climbing I just shift a lot more to keep that cadence up.

Lol I'm not sure if I should be flattered or offended. :P

I agree on the running bit. My wife increased her running pace by losing 25lbs. The only thing is that weight loss needs to be done gradually over longer periods. And this is where David's dilemma comes in, and this might be the same for others as well. Trying to drop a bunch of weight 4-6 weeks before an event is too late to really be much benefit since that much weight loss is inevitably going to involve a significant amount of muscle loss (as I told David, about %50 of all weight loss comes from muscle) which can negatively affect performance more than it will benefit. The slower you lose weight, the less fatigued you will be after workouts, which means you can go harder and see more adaptation (i.e. improve performance) and the less you will lose from your lean muscle mass. Studies have also shown that people who lose weight at a slower and more gradual weight tend to keep the weight off for much longer than those who try to drop a lot in a short time.

If you follow a periodization plan (Base, Build, Peak) the majority of weight loss should be done in the base period when you're doing longer rides and runs in the endurance zones, which predominately burn fat. Once you get into the build period, weight loss should be cut down to a minimum. Even if your plan doesn't use the vernacular (base, build, peak) most training plans do following a plan that builds intensity and power towards in the last 4-8 weeks before the event.

Gretchen - you're going to kill it this weekend!

Scott - holy cow you're quite the Disney run devotee. I'm pretty excited for ours even though we're not doing the glass slipper challenge or anything. All three of us are going to run though, we signed our daughter up for the kids fun run.

Dave Q - I'm on for relaying the Hyannis marathon in feb. My wife thinks that both of us training for HM at the same time might be a bad idea since we won't have enough time for the workouts but I'm not terribly worried. Most of the workouts for HM training plans are less than an hour. And it'll be over the winter when we don't have yardwork to contend with.

The swim was in the outdoor pool and transition was literally feet away from the pool so I had that going for me (1:51 T1 and 1:23 T2). Plus it was really nice out - 75 and overcast, similar to my actual Sprint a couple weeks back. Ended up with a gorgeous sunset while I was out on the bike and run. Here's a copy of my workout log:

    SWIM
    09m 450.00 yards02m /100 yards
Pool swim in a mock tri at the Y, last week of my Sprint Tri small group training!

    BIKE

Distance is currently an estimate, I'll have to download from the Polar watch to know exactly. I missed a turn on the 10 mile route and extended out to around 13.

    RUN
    22m 3.00 miles07m 19s /Mi
Not my fastest 3 miles but my fastest outdoor 3 miles. Small hill (mile 2-2.5) but largely flat course. Very happy. Almost caught the class leader who swam 50yds less than I did due to a lap counting error, and biked at least 3 miles less than I did due to my navigational issues. All in all I was 3 minutes slower than my Sprint Tri a couple weeks back but I biked ~4 miles longer.

    Right on Twig!

I am starting my weight loss now(done racing). Hoping to be near speedo weight by March, leaving me 14 weeks until my "A"Race.

    Nice John!!!

    Welcome Robbie!

    Good luck Gretchen.

    Twig ha ha ha ;-)

Dave I will sign up for another race- just trying to figure out which one.

I'm still struggling with motivation. Last night despite feelin pukey I did a momentum run ( more about keeping the momentum of going that a quality run). I felt pretty crappy but did a run.

I'm off for a week so should get in some good running and biking! I hope this will get me past the blahs I've been feeling.

Yes John we are a Disney family. Lol. We go more than I care to admit.

Alan I haven't forgotten to get back to you but life has been hectic. Did 4 hrs on bike and a 45 min run for my brick today. I was biking outside but the sky got really dark and since they were calling for thunderstorms all day when I stopped to bottle exchange I just put the bike on the trainer for the second 2 hours. It never started raining so I got in my run outside without having to get rained on or dodge lightning.

Gretchen and Jenn good luck this weekend. Can't wait to see your race reports

Gretchen Tell us how it went! Did you beat your sister?

Jenn Good luck in your race tomorrow. While you're out there racing know that I'm right there with you. Start time for me in Wave 3 is: 7:10am Eastern Time. When you're on the bike or run and having any issues tell them "Shut up Legs!' for me.

My Race I'm bored since I can't/won't work out today, so I figured I'd come in here and post. I went to the packet pickup and scouted out everything at the race spot today. I don't think I could be any better prepared mentally. I KNOW the course and that feels good. I just needed to connect the dots to see my transition and racking spot. Physically I'm sure I could have trained harder and more frequently. The nerves are starting to come up a little bit now. The OWS is the only piece I haven't done and I'm still convinced it's not going to freak me out. I thought it was cool seeing the small fish swimming around my feet when I waded into the start area today.

First pic is some of the fishys I'll be sharing the water with tomorrow.

The second pic is a shot of the course. For the Oly I'm just going around the outside of all orange buoys. Water temp is 75 degree F. It's a bathtub. Since I'm such a temperature wimp I love it.

Welcome Robbie!!! Very inspiring biography and a lot to accomplish, this group will help you with GREAT motivation - I have to say that I joined to jump from sprint distance to Oly and recently HIM, but most interesting, they are driving my main interest from wine to beer, you better watch out!

Have fun those racing the weekend - isn´t it one of the best moments, like this last picture, when you see the swimming course the day before, and you have those mixed feeling of excitement and paaaannic!!!!!!

Hi Dave, I'm a definite newbie here this year, but my take on it is that it is all relative. You always want to go faster than you did and you always have people passing you unless you're in the elite group. So here is my simple answer: your target average speed should be faster than it was last race. You are the only constant. You know how good you did before and how good you need to be to better yourself. If you finish in the top 50 percentile but you're racing against weak athletes then it shouldn't make you feel better unless you improve yourself. Forget about others and better yourself.

To give you a more specific answer then I'd say that you need to name the race where you want to be middle of the pack. Then let's bring up the results and see what the middle folks do.....that's the target,

Dave - This is really good advice. Not to turn the forum into a shrinks visit - but I think my drive to go faster/to beat 7 hours is an attempt on my part to make up for the crappy year I have had personally. A difficult teaching year thanks to hard to teach kids and an unsupportive administration makes me want to find somethings where I can achieve and have total control over the outcome. My racing is such a pursuit. By achieving my goals, I redeem myself... But the way I'm going about it seems all over the map - lose weight, increase my leg strength, pick a goal out of thin air - 7 hours. I feel like if I sit down and really figure out what I want to do and what's driving me to do it - then I could create a coordinated plan.

The other thing is I'm looking for something sustainable. One of the things I've liked about Gretchen's drive for 400 workouts this year is that while it's a big goal - it's sustainable. I want to avoid the ups and downs that come with having ADD and a compulsive mind (when I'm on I'm on and when I'm not - I get fat) and create a life where triathlon is an everyday thing with achievable goals every day week month and year.

    Does that make sense?

    Thanks!

With 10 weeks to go until B2B - you are at the height of your training! It's good you're figuring out your nutrition now so you can get mechanical about it on race race. Nutrition is something I need to refocus on because I know my lack of consistency this year is affecting my energy levels especially on the bike. Let me know how the Nuun is treating you.

Sorry for being gone for a few days. Despite it being summer and having all this time off - it's been a busy couple of days

    - the kids and wife are back and I've been trying to spend some QT with them
    - my son's room in the basement has been inundated by mold. We spent 3 days cleaning every surface, buying a new dehumidifier, and scrubbing out his mattress - so disgusting.
    - while cleaning my son's room, I stepped on a row of industrial strength staples and cut my foot so deeply that blood was dropping from my foot. It made running impossible for a couple days but I was able to get out and do a gingerly 8 miles yesterday, which was my longest run so far this year.
    - completed 2/3 of the biking repair: totally rebuilt my rear tire - new rim tape, tube, and tire, changed rear cassette (incredibly easy) installed new chain (pretty easy but I was so worried about making sure I had the same number of chain links the job took much longer than it should have. For those thinking of trying these repairs yourself, I will say that if I can do them - anyone can do them. My only piece of advice - watch a bunch of videos first.
    - I've got 70 on the bike tonight. Thinking of riding back to the top of Mt. Wachusett - the highest "mountain" around here and meeting my kids there with a bucket of KFC at the top.

I think I might have mentioned that my eldest son was having health problems - dibilitating cramps in his stomach. After months of teaching the docs now think they know why - his intestines are inverted. Usually - this happens in the womb and most people are diagnosed as babies. But Eric has been living with this for a while and we are so glad to finally know what it is. Now the question is - how do they fix it? It looks like surgery but we will know for sure on Monday when we meet again with his doctor. Please keep your fingers crossed.

Been drinking beer from Hardywood from Richmond - so ridiculously good!

Sandwiches worked great. I did peanut butter and almond butter to mix it up, Ate a half every hour. I've been using nuun for a while just to flavor water but not for workouts since it doesn't have calories so I knew I could tolerate it. I didn't feel bloated and seemed to have decent energy left for the run. I think the main problem is going to be space to hold the sandwiches.

Goal for the week is to not miss a swim.

Hi All!! Race was good, bad, and ugly all in one! I posted a race report (http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=534870) for anyone who is interested. I beat my time from last year by 20 seconds, but didn,t beat my sister. I learned a solid lesson yesterday about hurrying ending up costing you more time in the end. I didn't put my bike gloves on in T1 to save time. Less than a block from T 1 I tried to put on my gloves while riding, something I pulled off easily in my last race, and lost control of my bike. I managed to stay wheels down, but ended up on the sidewalk, running into the curb (avoiding other racers and a parked car). Blew both tubes and I only had one spare tube. Fortunately, I was only a block from the bike check station and the bike guy saved my race. He changed both my tubes for me and got me back on yhe course in about 12 min (inc the walk back to T1). I rode like heck 18.9mph--a personal best, by far) and ran about 45 sec per mile faster than I'd planned for, but I had my watch set on swimming instead of multisport, so I couldn't pace.

Official time: 2:00:10 (24 sec faster than last year)
Watch/Moving time: 1:51:35 (sister was 1:47:xx and she had a BP run)
