I ate turkey and a few biscuits. Yep, there was turkey, a beef roast, corn, green beans, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and gravy, and all I ate was turkey and biscuits. My daughter sits at the end of the table next to me, she gets the big plate, I get the smaller one. Did I forget to mention that I also had a piece of chocolate pie? Mmmmmm It was good! I can't believe you avoided all the good stuff Glad you enjoyed the pie though. I got my pumpkin pie Even had a leftover slice for breakfast. I didn't necessarily avoid it, I really don't like any of it. I'm not the best eater. WOOHOO!!! for your pumpkin pie, even for breakfast!!! |

Elite 4201 washington state | Subject: RE: Ghoulie eliptical v ST November challenge II Happy Friday, Ghoulies! DH & I have the day off, so we stayed up late watching a movie, and then slept in. Yesterday was very fun with the run in the morning and then family in the afternoon! Dinner turned out very well. I ate more than usual but didn't stuff too bad. The "kids" (grown stepdaughters and husbands) are so much fun and we played some card games. Just a real NICE day. Rained yesterday for the turkey trot but today looks sunshine-y so maybe I will ride the bike outside instead of inside! Enjoy your weekend! |

Champion 6225 | Subject: RE: Ghoulie eliptical v ST November challenge II well GHOULIES. i woke up half expecting to be sore and depleted as a result of my 4 hour spinapalooza. and guess what???? im NEITHER sore nor feeling depleted. that fuel/recovery plan worked like a charm, and i do think that ST routine o' mine is strengthen all those weak areas that would have been 'fatigued' today. yippo-skippo. soooooooo...... its the final installment of a 1 mile continuous swim for the month of November, and im 'on-line' to hit the 'mark' at the end of December - 24 1 mile continuous swims - AND im feeling good enough that im thinking that 2 mile continuous MAY happen before Jan 1st. we shall see. the distance isnt whats important as much as being able to swim the distance EFFICIENTLY. i can swim 2 miles, but can i swim it WELL, that's the question. we. shall. see. [NO WORRIES, i will MOST DEFINATELY NOT be attempting 2 miles today. RECOVERY RECOVERY RECOVERY is the name of todays game. smile] so its ONWARDANDUPWARD stacieb |

Champion 6225 | Subject: RE: Ghoulie eliptical v ST November challenge II typically the fourth week is a TAPER WEEK in my schedule....this being the 4th week were heading into now.... BUT... im gonna extend my regular workouts for another week. im feeling good right now, but see NO NEED to push it. just steady as i go.... next week im racing (on the 12th), nothing major about the race just a fun jingle bell 5K w some friends from the Y. but, that way i can a) get my 8 miler in that i reduced this week in lieu of the 4 hr spinapalooza [probably TUES] b) taper before my NOT-so-uber-important race on the 12th c) AND give my body/mind a 'break', i love me a goooooood taper. then back at it for three weeks, starting the 14th, hopefully adding in an xtra set to each of my ST exercises (we'll see when the body tells me its time) and then GRADUALLY ramp up (hopefully, again we'll see what my body 'says') right into that 2 mile continuous swim come January 1st. WHOOP! and after all thats 'accomplished' ill have me another taper week, just in time for (i believe) the FRIGID 5 MILER on 1/10, which it will probably be....FRIGID....... on January 10th. :P its. all. good. stacieb Edited by skrtrnr 2009-11-29 6:33 AM |

Champion 6225 | Subject: RE: Ghoulie eliptical v ST November challenge II i was re-reading a portion of my ST for Triathletes book last night.... and how im doing the ST exercises now (high reps, low # of sets, low weight, low amt of 'rest' inbetween sets) promotes MUSCULAR ENDURANCE which is the focus is of this particular 'period' in my training. the book said, 'MUSCULAR ENDURANCE is the ability of a muscle to withstand repeated use over a period of time' and i was thinking about my 4 hour ride yesturday how great i felt during the ride, and even today. THATS exactly what i experienced. im super excited. this is the first time that ive had a ST that actually 'works' in the sense that i can a) SEE the changes happening and b) it 'translates' into REAL, LIVE IN VIVO gains in the tri disciplines. again. uber cool. stacieb |

I am having so many problems now swimming I feel like I'll never get to a mile continuous. I don't know what happened, I used to be able to swim, now I am usually so frustrated by the time I get out of the pool, I feel like I'm taking steps backward, not forward. |

Champion 6225 | Subject: RE: Ghoulie eliptical v ST November challenge II aspeelma - 2009-11-29 7:13 AM Stacie I want to come swim with you. I am having so many problems now swimming I feel like I'll never get to a mile continuous. I don't know what happened, I used to be able to swim, now I am usually so frustrated by the time I get out of the pool, I feel like I'm taking steps backward, not forward. dagnabit ANN. i sooooo wish you could come swim w me too. im so, so sorry that swimming is frustrating to you right now. of all the three disciplines, honestly, i think its the one that is the most challenging. the progress is so, so sloooooooow. have you been able to ID what it is that causing you problems? i know for me once i was able to at least ID an issue i was having in the water (i am far far from solving it, believe you me) it helped to alleviate some of the frustration i was having. just by KNOWING what it was causing problems gave me some sense of 'mastery' you know. and then ive set about focusing on JUST THAT and working toward a solution. thats the other thing i found w swimming, there are almost always a MYRIAD of things that cause issues w my swim, and i found myself getting terminally frustrated by trying to work on everything all at the same time.... this way, all im focused on is changing/improving ONE area, instead of trying to tackle the whole kit and kaboodle. is there anyone knowlegeable in your circle (a master swimmer perhaps) that can take a look at your stroke?? that was the starting point for me - i went to the Masters Stroke Clinic, and Jamie my friend noticed that i was crossing my arm in front of me, and then i read up about what could be the 'cause'.....turns out that for me i was rotating as far on my non-breathing stroke, so now ive been doing drills AND ST exercises to 'fix' that problem....and ive definately noticed a difference, not so much w speed BUT DEFINATELY w endurance and efficiency ie i can longer and im less fatigued and tired. all that say, hang in there, and if theres anything i can do ie be a 'sounding board' just know im your go to GHOULIE GIRL. HAPPY SWIMMING. stacieb |

Champion 16743 Somewhere I can be nekidd | Subject: RE: Ghoulie eliptical v ST November challenge II Thanks Stacie, I will definitely check out the website. I had a swim coach tell me my stroke looked fine. Right now I think my biggest problem is kicking. I can kick, or I can breathe, I can't do both. If I use the pull buoy I can swim forever, when I'm kicking I wear out fast, and I have problems breathing. It doesn't help that my knee is bothering me now, I think that may have made my kicking even worse. Our Y is supposed to be starting a master's class sometime in the near future. I think I am going to sign up for it. They want people to race, too. I have no desire to do that, I just want to be a more efficient swimmer. |

Pro 4482 NJ | Subject: RE: Ghoulie eliptical v ST November challenge II Evening Ghoulies. Had a really nice long weekend. I was able to stay away from work *stuff* and just enjoy time with family and friends. More eating than normal, but nothing over the top. My mom did the turkey trot with me on Thursday, which was fun. She's 69 so just getting out there is cool. Shopped a bit on Friday, but avoided the big crowds. Sent everyone home yesterday and trying to get through all the laundry. Hope everyone had a good holiday. |

I actually learned to swim a couple years ago at a TI workshop. I was lucky enough to have lessons in the endless pool at the TI studio with Terry after the workshop to reinforce what I'd learned. It worked for me with respect to confidence and form, but I am still uber slow. I think taking bits and pieces that work for you makes a lot of sense. There is no single, perfect solution. What is very clear to me is that progress in swimming is much slower than either biking or running. Another thing to consider is that for most beginners, more time can be gained in quick, efficient transitions vs improving swim and run times. I had one ridiculous T1 that was over 8 mins because my timing chip popped off when I stripped off the wetsuit. I was determined to have an official finish time, so rooted around until I found the darn thing. |

Champion 16743 Somewhere I can be nekidd | Subject: RE: Ghoulie eliptical v ST November challenge II For the swimming, I think part of the frustration is that the progress for me has been so slow. I'll read in tri talk about people having breakthroughs where they go from only being able to swim 25 meters at a time to suddenly being able to swim 400 or 700 meters at a time. I haven't had any breakthroughs. Maybe I'm trying to hard, thinking about it too much, or something. I'll keep putting my time in in the pool this winter. I'm anxiously awaiting warmer weather so I can get out and do an OWS. I really think not having a wall there would be a big help. |

W. GRAVES HAS OFFICIALLY PUNK'D ME THIS MONTH in our elliptical vs ST Disdain challenge. though. i think ive definately come out a winner this month, having seen in vivo the benefits that ST can/does provide, the fact that the ST has become a lot less disdain-full, is a GREAT feeling. stacieb |
