squishybelly - 2008-06-11 10:00 PM Rob- really nice job on the 10K. Always great to hit a new milestone.

Thanks.  Although I'll listen to my body first and foremost, each goal makes me hungry for the next.

Rob...congrats on the 10K , great job! Someday I need to try one too.

Did I say it didn't snow yesterday ? Well it made up for it today ,!! I woke up to a nice white covering of snow, ugh! Hit the gym today instead for a workout on the bike and cool down on the treadmill.  There's noting like it after a stressful day

I met another BT person while I was there, cool ! She just started doing tri's last year after losing  a lot of weight so we can compare notes.

The weekend is supposed to be warmer (we'll see) if so I can get a good long ride in and a run.

Have a good end to your week everyone!

Gloria - I had no idea you would be getting such rotten weather in June. Snow - I can't even imagine it at this point....but you're welcome to keep it.

Good thing you got yourself a gym membership. That's something I'm lacking, but I have my bike trainer at home - but no treadmill.

Caius - are you still geared up for your training in Lake Placid this weekend. I'm assuming you're still doing the 1/2? Good luck, if you're still going (your logs show that you're still not feeling great).

Neil

P.S. - Don't forget about my training question on the last page.

Hiya!

Yeah, I'm still planning on going. I was supposed to go up today but had to stay back due to work. I will be heading up there early tomorrow morning to get a swim, a couple loops of the bike course and the 1/2 marry on Sunday.

And yup, I'm still not feeling well. I mean, my stomach is not that bad. I have mild cramps throughout the day but I'm making WAY to many visits to the bathroom still and it's really draining me out physically. If it's not gone by Monday I definitely have to take a visit to the doc.

I will answer your Q later tonigh, I promise.

Calgary's weather was bad too, though no snow here.  Rained all week, fortunately I was out of town in Oklahoma City where it was nice and warm.  Tornado alley, though, so we were always conscious of storms.  Actually I was at the National Weather Center so we were watching all of the US weather.

I'm hearing some bad news about Iowa and tornado, so Timmeh wherever you are, I'm thinking of you.

squishybelly - 2008-06-11 9:08 PM Since we're into race season, what place do Z1/Z2 training sessions have? Even when I'm not pushing my pace, I still find that I am not doing any type of "slower pace" training. During the winter I'd really focused on trying to keep my HR below the 155 mark, but can't think of the last time I did that. I have sessions I really push, and then others that feel comfortable - but their still above Z2. Thoughts? Also, is there a good plan to follow now that I've already completed the basic 12 week plan (which consequently calls for lots of zone 2 training).

Great questions. Training in Z2 is at the heart of endurance training. The more of this you do, the more your endurance builds up. Z1 is mostly used for warmups, cooldowns or for recovery workouts generally the day after a hard workout. But Z2, Z2 is where it's at.

Normally as you progress through your training season towards your A race, your workouts go from base type to race specific simulations. So at first, you use mostly Z2 to lay the endurance foundation down, your base. Later on, you start adding key workouts that simulate your race, including pace which naturally will mean higher intensities, but Z2 is still there in between all these workouts keeping your base strong.

From your post, I have some questions.

1) Are you training every workout at the same intensity? Are you making your hard workouts a tad too easy and your easy workouts a tad too hard? This is a common trap we all fall into so do a check once in a while to catch yourself if you are. It's so easy to be out doing an easy session and have your brain say, "Hey, this is too easy. I'm not getting anything out of this. Let's crank it up." You really do need to keep the easy stuff easy and the hard stuff hard.

2) You say that even above Z2 it feels comfortable. How did you establish your HR zones? Above Z2 should not be feeling comfortable. Z3 is not too bad but it's certainly not comfortable. Maybe your zones need to be restablished.

As for your next training plan, what are you aiming for? Do you want to stick with Sprints but execute them faster? Do you want to move up to Oympic distance? If the former, you could try the Intermediate Sprint training plan. Also, have a look at the link below. It's got a lot of great info on choosing a training plan.

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=648

Hope this helps!

Hey everyone

Yes, we do get rotton weather at  weird times of the year, but hey wait a minute and it will change we always tell visitors lol. So, the snow melted and by the weekend it should be nice and sunny . I sure hope it sticks this time ( saw snow in July once, yuk !) I grew up in So. California , sun, beaches...these long winters here about do me in...

Cauis- good luck with your race, I hope you feel better already if not then real soon, food posioning is the pits !

quick question for everyone, I read on another forum about putting your bike seat in the "slam" position to make it more comfortable, I can't find much information on the web that shows what this looks like or why it would be a good thing to do . What does it mean and would it be any better ?

Hey everyone,

As you may have seen on the news our town is filling up with water! My normal bike route is now under about 10 feet!

Well, we are very fortunate and our home is safe. I will be out of town for the weekend though and most likely without internet access, so I 'll check in next week.

Everyone have a fantastic weekend!

Tim

I took a look back at my old logs and found that I'd run a TT around Feb and based my HR zones on the effort from the last 20 minutes with an average HR of 170. I can't remember back that far at this point, but I know I was supposed to go all out, and I'm pretty sure that I did. But, based on my recent 10K run - which was definetly all out, I wonder if I should rejig my zones based on this data. I'll post below and just let me know your opinion.

OK - Edited this as I did some calculations based on the Training Bible (even though I don't have it with me at the moment). Let me know if these maybe make more sense. Based on the last 5k of my run, I figure my average HR to have been 175.

Zone 1: 121 - 151
Zone 2: 152 - 160
Zone 3: 161 - 168
Zone 4: 169 - 174
Zone 5a: 175 - 178
Zone 5b: 179 - 183
Zone 5c: 184 - 192

Thanks,

Neil

Kristina, have a great time in Disneyland:  you'll probably get lots of walking done!

Timmeh, glad you and your family are all okay.  Saw the news and was worried.  Still very sad about the Boy Scout camp as I'm sure everyone in your area is.

Dads, enjoy Father's Day!

Thanks! I will enjoy my Father's day (weekend) by training in Lake Placid for my upcoming IMLP!!!

Neil, yup, I agree with your 175 HR for your last 20 minutes of your last race. BTW, damn you're a pretty fast runner!!!

When I plug that figure into BT's zone calculator (which is based on the Triathlon Training Bible, I get the following, which pretty much matches up with yours.

HR/Pace labelRange data label
1 - Recovery116 - 148
2 - Extensive Endurance149 - 159
3 - Intensive Endurance160 - 167
4 - Sub-Threshold168 - 174
5a - SuperThreshold175 - 179
5b - Anaerobic Endurance180 - 184
5c - Power186 - 194

Thanks Caius - when I ran that 10K I was pleasently surprised. When I started last year I couldn't run a single km + I was never any good running as a kid. But now that I ran that 10K, I'm going to aim to break 40min by somepoint next year.

BTW - where do you find the BT calculators.

Have a great weekend!!

squishybelly - 2008-06-14 2:30 PM BTW - where do you find the BT calculators.

You can find the HR zone calculators 2 ways:

1) Go to your training log and look for "Manage your HR Zones" on the left hand column.

or

2) Go to your training log and click on Control Panel | Edit your training settings | Manage your HR Zones.

Hello Everyone!

Checking back in after a busy weekend! Our town is flooded, but thankfully, our house was in no danger. Traffic is an absolute nightmare, as I have been spending approx 4 hours daily trying to get where I am going. We are also on a water conservation order, so showers only every other day and no laundry. Apparently who ever thought that rule up is not a triathlete!

Well I got my aerobars! Ended up getting these:
http://www.profile-design.com/products/aerobars/lightning-stryke-ra...

So far I like them very much, but am still getting used to the position. I think I'm going to adjust my saddle forward just a bit.

Nice aerobars Timmeh!

I'm very sorry to hear about all the hard times everyone is going through. I just can't imagine how tough that must be. Is the water deep enough to be able to swim to work? Now THAT would be cool!

Sorry...just trying to throw some levity in there.

Cool Aerobars Tim! I hope to have some next year . Sorry to hear about the floods in your area. I know my husband who is an OTR trucker was through that area last week and was shocked at high the water had become. It is good to know that you and your family are safe!!

The weather is still acting like summer for now anyway....I wanted to go take a ride tonight but mowed the yard instead, all that darn snow last week made it really grow lol.

I did get a ride in yesterday and I think my seat may be a little low so I am going to take it to my LBS for some adjustments this week.

Have a great start to your week everyone.

Timmeh - sweet looking aerobars. I know how wierd they feel at the beginning, but once that wind starts pushing against you and you aren't riding in them, you really start to appreciate how much of a benefit they are.

Caius - great job on the 1/2 on Sunday. Given your training load the day before and stomach issues during the week, I'd say that was a really impressive run. At this point do you figure you're ready to enjoy / suffer through IMLP?

Anyone else racing this weekend? I'm doing the Guelph Sprint (750M/19K/5K). It's shorter than my first one so I'm hoping to maybe push it a little more on the bike, and keep my fingers crossed for no stitch on the run.
