awal1 - 2009-05-20 5:29 PM This is my first IM so I don't have enough history to have that confidence.  So when I'm not training, I feel like i should be.  If this were a marathon or HIM I would have a pretty good idea of where I am.

Someone just tell me that my 5:15 HIM on a flat course equals a 10:30 at CDA.  That's how it works right?

Let us know how that works out for you   If you're in the M45-49 AG, my recommendation is jump out with the fish at the start of the swim and hammer the bike as hard as you can for the first loop (kinda like it's a 56-mile HIM)...

ironlib - 2009-05-20 7:13 PM was feeling great about my training again and then I got sick... again.  my body is so ready for taper time.  bummed about being sick when I was feeling so good but better now than 4 weeks from now!

A friend of mine once told me " better to start under prepared than injured" I suspect the same holds true for illness. Make sure you care for your body as it will be tested in a few weeks and needs to be up to the task...

Either that or if you are in my age group, take it all very easy so you don't miss any pretty scenery or are too tired to enjoy the catered open bar after party at the VIP tent. Tell them you're with me... sure they'll let you in.

Catered open bar?  This is starting to sound like my kind of event!

NLG - 2009-05-18 12:09 PM Does anyone know of competitors or competitors relatives/support teams that needs very reasonably priced accommodations? There are 3 of us from Saskatoon competing and our support group is very light, but we've rented a house that sleeps 8 people. It'd be nice to defray even a tiny bit of the cost, and help someone out that might be scrambling. For more info, just message me. N.

I have reservations for my buddy and I at a local motel but could bail out I think. What are you looking to get? We leave Wed Am and are leaving Mon. night.

Hi sgillen:

How are you getting to IMCDA? Will you be flying and getting there the same day or will you be commuting some other fashion? We don't take possession of the house until Thursday day and we'll be leaving Wednesday. We'll be driving down from Saskatoon (stop in Calgary overnight). How does US$38 a night (that you are actually sleeping there--4 nights?) sound?

My race plan involves building a lead in the first 800 meters, losing my lunch and out of body experiences.    Not necessarily in that order.  I plan to have a car battery and some wet sponges in my special needs bag along with instructions to myself to "not go towards the light unless its illuminating a Ford sign".  This should end well.

OK, I'm new to posting on a thread, but I'm posing a general question about "special needs bag" planning for IM CDA. This is my first IM and I wonder what people put in the special needs bag, where & how you access it during the race, etc. Thanks for any pointers.

Anything you might need half way through your ride and bike. I have never used one but perhaps I should. Most people put in nutrition stuff, some extra clothes, sun screen, advil,  etc. The bags are pretty big so be creative...

I  use my bike special needs bag for two bottles of Infinit to get me through the second half of the course and a spare tube (or two) in case I have a flat (or two) on the front half and want to restock.

I have used my run special needs for a long sleeve shirt in case it got cool during the eveining but I never stopped for it.  This year I'm thinking of putting a gun with one bullet in it in case the run is going really really bad

Hilarious!  I've seen a "car battery with wet sponges" and a "gun with one bullet" as potential special needs items.... cracking me up!  Much needed as these last couple weeks of (really) hard workouts are starting to get to me.

You get 2 special needs bags, one for the bike and one for the run.  You have a chance to get your special needs bag at the mid point of both the bike and the run.  There are volunteers to help you get them; you call out your number and they do their best.  I think I had to find my own on the bike last year; they're in numerical order on the side of the road -- it's simple.

For my first IM I put all sorts of junk that I ultimately didn't need in special needs.  This year, I'm keeping it simple with the idea that I'll likely skip both.

Bike:
  • Extra tube and CO2 in case disaster strikes during the first loop.
  • Extra solid food (I don't do gel from the course because, well, gel doesn't do me well).  I don't plan on needing this extra food but will pack it in case of emergency.  I'll be taking liquid from the course, so no need to replenish at special needs.
  • A dry rag (if I stop, I'll wipe the not so fresh feeling off my person)
Run:
  • Rag on ice in a zip lock (again, to clean off and feel fresh)
  • Advil
  • Imodium (I've been using this during training to help avoid GI issues -- hopefully don't need it at this point but want to have it available)
  • Note of inspiration from me to me (in case I hit special needs in a dark moment and need a little pick me up)
  • Small stick of Body Glide (in case of chaffing issues)
Hope that helps.

Funny stuff Paul!

My bike special needs is the same as Paul, except based on 2007 I am going to put Imodium AD in both special needs bags.

As far as the run, I am thinking about a motorized scooter.  That will come in handy on the second loop.

What happened to the "nothing new on race day rule".  Have you tried this out in training yet?

Sorry,

Question about special needs bags, I have heard that they frequently get lost so you don't get your stuff back. Anyone experience this? It seems to be a simple process and considering the work that goes into putting on an IM I wouldn't think it would be a problem.

Ironman gives you that disclaimer so as to not off the athletes IF they don't get their "stuff" back...In my 4 Ironman...I have always gotten my bags back w/everything in it...

At IMCDA you can get your run SN bag back (it's on the other side of the park, short walk from T2).

You should not plan on seeing your bike SN bag ever again.  The problem is that the bike SN station is far away from T2.  You drop off your bag in the morning and then it is trucked out to the SN station.  At the end of the day they pick up all the SN bags that are scattered alon the road and put the in the back of a dump truck.  The bags are then dumped in a pile back at the city park.  If you want the search thru the pile you can but I am 0 for 4 on finding my bike bag at IMCDA.

Thanks for all the helpful, and creative, suggestions for the Special needs bags (as well as the warnings). I think I'll prepare with TSA rules in mind and not pack firearms or car batteries ... of course that too may mean that no liquids or gels over 3 oz ??

For all of you that are participating, I know that you will be entering your taper here pretty soon, BUT I want to remind you of another taper to be aware of.

If you are travelling with family, your SO will be entering taper mode as well!  They will be trying to keep their sanity around you, get the kids to all of their regular activities, AND get ready for the trip.  I know that I have already started compiling lists of things that need to be done around the house before we leave (McFuzz always wonders why I would want the house clean & I usually tell him it is so if someone breaks in they can find everything easier ), things to pack, purchase, and a timeline of when each thing should be done by (traveller's cheques, groceries, incidentals, manicure, pedicure, massage).

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up.  Let the taper madness begin!
