My race report is posted from this weekend. Had a good race that beat my expectations, and gave me something to be hungry for in training. The weather started at 87 degrees and overcast and ended 92 and clear skies. Beautiul, but warm, and I paid for not drinking enough on the bike. The swim was good, but since that is my strongest skill I wasn't too surprised. Burned my legs up a little on the bike, and should have been down in aero more, but not a bad leg. The run was really disappointing. I think I ran too much on the track the week leading up, as my legs felt really heavy until the 2 mile mark, and then I was sprinting to the end. I passed 8 people in the last 500 feet of the race if that tells you anything. Was top 3rd of my age group, and  top 27% overall (out of 500 people) in the event, so was a good finish.

I had decided that this race was going to be my last for the summer, as I am going to be doing a half mary October 11, so I really wanted to end on a positive note. I got to spend the weekend with my wife and 2 year old boy in Indy, going to the childrens museum and just some "us" time. Basically a perfect weekend.

I am in my 5th wk of the Beginner Sprint 12 wk plan. I feel like everything finally came together last week and I was able to get all 3 diciplines multiple times in; however, the run is where I still struggle. I am suffering from pretty bad shin splints still and my running is kinda all over the place. My thoughts are to stretch out shorter runs every other day as opposed to doing any back to back. Planning ahead, can I scratch one strength training session and just do 1 a week? The plan has me doing a least 2 ST sessions and while I know how important it is to strength train I feel like I to focus on S/B/R as I am coming up on my race. I only have so much time permitted so would you advise this? My logs are pretty accurate.

Well its good things are starting to come together for you..

my opinion is to leave the strength training in place.. cut back on running until you get shins in order..

recommend doing calve raises, walk on heels, and walk on toes... also if you have a therapy band. tie one end to foot and hold other end, and push toes away from you.. few sets of 20. make sure you ice and massage shins afterwards.. these exercises help strengthen the tibialis.. (have to do this at least 4 times a week)

RICE should be apart of your vocabulary R=> Rest, I=>Ice, C=>Compress, E=>Elevate

you have time before tri, to get the benefits..

Hi gang,  I have bad news and worse news.

Bad news:  Couldn't compete Sunday because of work.

Worse news:  On mile 24 of my 28 mile bike ride yesterday I suffered a heart attack.  Not cool at all at the ripe old age of 39.  Genetics is the biggest culprit....of course the blood clot didn't help either.  I had one heart cath yesterday and they are going in for a second look and stint tomorrow.  Doc says I'll miss the rest of the events I had planned for this year but will be able to start training again in a couple of months.  I can't even begin to describe how frustrating this is....but at least I'm here to be frustrated.

Mike..really sorry to hear the bad news! Apparently they caught it in time before something worse could've happened so I guess that's the good news in this...good luck with your procedures and I know you'll do great. Armed with that knowledge you can do some really smart training, stay in excellent health, and take good care of yourself...and especially have lots of fun!

Home from the hospital and on track for rehab.  I have to take it easy for a couple of weeks but the Doc expects me to be back to a fairly full schedule (work and training) within a month.  I think it will be awhile before I go for a solo ride or run but the monitored biking and running starts in a week.

I won't make either of the tris I was planning this fall but the Doc says I'll be good to go in the spring.

Thanks for the encouragment and don't give me too much grief about my August totals Laughing

Is it good to do duathlons during the off-season or is just training on a maintenance program good? Or, are both good ideas to do?

hey monica..
i think duathlons are great to do..especially as b or c races.. you could use them to improve your bike/run transition and maybe your run speed..

you planning to do cape henry? i am.. maybe ill see you there.

What are "b or c races"?

"B" races are races you use to prep for an "A" race(a race you really want to do).. "C" race is a race that you do just because.. you do it or you don't.. not really significant.

"B" races also help gage your fitness.. (peaking at the right time)

example if breezy point is an "A" race for you:
"B" race smithfield sprint "A" race breezy point

normally when you plan out your race season.. you list all the races you "really" want to do.. then find some other races that will help you prepare

hope this helps.. Let me know if you need more assistance with this.. This is probable one of the more important things to understand.. This season is almost over, so it time to look into the future..

so if anyone needs assistance with race planning let me know. i will help as much as i can.

How do you register for the Wicked? Is it off of Tidewater Striders, Kalerunning, or something else? I would be interested as well.

Hi Mo & team,

I am looking for some advice. I try to plan my workouts a week or so in advance so they fit into my schedule. However, when I miss a workout I get kind of depressed. Should I be planning my workouts or just doing them on the fly, so that my training calendar doesn't look so depressing with all the missed workouts.

I like planning ahead because it gives me something to shoot for. If there is something out of my control, obviously there is nothing I can do and I also don't want to push so hard that I become injured. I am loving the intensity at which I am training these days, it is just tough to get it all in.

I know that my schedule looks pretty decent, so am I just being to hard on myself? Hubby might have dropped the words 'exercise-obsessed..." Should I scale back on my planned workouts, so I don't feel so bad? I feel like such a whiner but my husband can't relate, as he isn't very athletic. I would like to know what other athletes do. What do you do when you miss a workout?
