scout21 - 2010-01-07 7:57 PM Stu - Please remind me...are we weighing in weekly for our weight loss challenge?

Scout

Yep.  Saturdays are check in with Stu day.  Send me a message/inspire with your updated info.  After a week with no exercise and 3 sit down meals / day, I'm not exactly looking forward to my results, but I promise to finish the month strong!  The only hope is that I've spent most of the week on my feet rather than behind a desk and I've done what I can to eat reasonably.  Really miss the training.

Michael, the paths at ND are all snow covered... it really hasn't stopped snowing since I arrived.  Looking like tomorrow may be a little interesting flying through Chicago too.

Found these three Ian Thorpe videos that show the high elbow that I'm striving for.  His elbow is a little different from Mr Smooth in that it doesn't look like his elbow drops much below his shoulder, where Mr Smooth looks like the elbow drops more and his hand is much deeper in the water.

Experior - 2010-01-07 5:15 PM x2 on lessons now rather than later.  It doesn't necessarily take much -- just someone who is willing and able to give you the right advice at the right time.

Also, it can take time to find a good coach.  I searched for a coach for several months and finally found one willing to work with me.  (I tried masters, but it didn't work out.  YMMV.)  I wish I had found her months before.  I took a hiatus from coaching after IMKY, but we're starting back in a couple of weeks, and I'm looking forward to (but also dreading) what she has to say.

I think we are supposed to contact Stu on Saturdays about our progress.  Right Stu?

Things are looking pretty good this week; of course there is always tomorrow, but I feel like I am in a pretty good grove this week.  We'll see what Saturday weigh in looks like.  Keep at it everyone.

Good morning everyone.  I hope you will all have  a better day than me.  Straight meetings all day, and somehow I've got to fit in a tempo run and a swim.  Off to the first meeting.  Have a great day.

I actually called in sick today - taking a mental health day.  The schools are opening 2 hours late, there's snow on the ground, I have a light calendar today and a very busy week next week.  I'll get in a run and Jorge ride #2.

Good morning! Now that you've all convinced me to take a swim class, I went on line to sign up for one. Guess what! They're all filled up or at times that I can't go to.

Who the heck takes a swim class at 10:45 AM? And why does the Y have 3 of them listed, when none of them are full?

I did get a great ride in on the bike trainer last night! Legs are tired  today!

Hey folks. I just read the official weigh-in is tomorrow, but I stepped on the scale today. 220, so that's 3 pounds since last Friday. It's amazing what a difference not eating like a total pig can make.

I'm liking all the swim talk. I haven't been in the water since November. I drove by the beach this AM after dropping my kids off at school and wished I had my wetsuit in the trunk. It was dead flat. My swim group meets tomorrow so I think I'll brave the cold and get wet. I don't have a pool available to me to when you only OWS you just have to take whatever the elements give you.

I feel like I'm barely hanging on to my fitness these days. We've been dealing with that same cold snap here in FL and I'm not set up for cold weather training. I've cobbled together enough gear to keep running, but biking is out (at least for me) when it's 35 degrees. I'm missing my bike a lot; it's my first choice for longer workouts so my efforts have all been a lot shorter the last few weeks.

Check and see if they have a Tri-Swim Class. The one I had to take was at 5:30 am. The only thing I knew about swimming is how not to sink. There is enough time while all the good swimmers are doing their workouts for the instructor to get you headed in the right direction.

After a 3 week recovery period from my Wiinjury, I couldn't take it anymore and went to the gym at lunch to see how the knees held up.  Thirty minutes at a brisk walking pace and no pain.  Hurray!  I'm planning to sloooowly work back up to where I was over the next couple of weeks.

I, too, have enjoyed the swimming thread.  In my downtime, I picked up a copy of Total Immersion.  Since my last swim class was in 3rd grade, it has been an interesting read.  After a long business trip next week, I am planning hitting the pool and trying out the drills.

Have a great weekend everyone!

I have a short 4 mile run planned this evening.  More of a tempo run.  Indoor cycling tomorrow plus goal reporting time.  Next week will be a taper week for me (regarding run miles anyway).  I have my first 10K race on Jan. 17th.  Really looking forward to it and have my goals set.  Goals: Under 60 mins. with a stretch goal of 55 minutes.

I took the new bike out for the first real ride today, I forgot to bring my shoes home at Christmas and I switched the gears out to compact so now we're ready. Or so I thought. How long did it take to adjust to riding a tri bike? Definitely different than my road bike. Does anyone do weight training for arms, shoulders, neck etc or is it just time out there riding? Thanks for any advice.Melinda

Hi Gang,

I'm glad to be back in Virginia... 5 straight days of snow and cold was getting to me.  Notre Dame may be a beautiful campus, but next time I'll try to visit in the summer.

Probably go to the gym later with Karen and do my weigh in there after the workout.  Generally I kept the calories down and was on my feet all week, so despite the miserable training, I am hoping for decent progress on the weight loss goal.

Which reminds me... send in your progress today!!  Updated chart tomorrow... looking forward to seeing how we're all doing.  Early returns indicate that when you stop eating so much crap food, you lose weight.  Who'd have thunk it!

Have a great day everyone!

Got back to training yesterday for the first time in over a week, planned on doing 6 miles but my back tightened up on me at 4. Very frustrating, I gave it alot of time off, hope this doesn't become chronic. Gonna get on the trainer for an hour or so today(after some stretching). We'll see how it goes.

Other than that, taking the kids to swim lessons then it's time for some playoff football.

J-E-T-S, got the dog representin in throwback colors.

Yes, time is the main thing. I went out on my tri bike a few weeks ago (before the deep freeze) for the first time and ouch.  I had been riding my road bike exclusively since October, and I definitely felt it.  It'll come.

Also, try to keep your arms and shoulders relaxed.  Don't rely on your muscles to hold you up -- use your skeleton as much as possible.  The neck, though -- well, that takes time.  When I first got my tri bike, I couldn't stay aero for more than about 5 minutes.  I did 'aero intervals' where I'd force myself to stay aero for 5 minutes, then take a break and do it again.  After a while, I extended the intervals.

Nice dog!

Yeah, on the weight front I think I'm OK.  On the kicking...well, let's just say that the kick drills are slaying me!  If I can drag my sorry self back to the pool later today I might get close...

Glad you had a safe trip.  I spent several winters in South Bend (went to grad school at ND).  The lake effect snow and gray linoleum skies are hard to take.

So no swim this AM after all. My buddy Jim sends me a text at 6:30: "I'll swim in the cold, and I'll swim in the rain, but I won't swim in the cold rain." 42 and rainy this AM. Too bad, because it was pretty flat out there for once.

Instead I hit the gym for a bit of weight training and finished up with 30 minutes on a spin bike doing intervals. I'm thinking about riding the velodrome, so I thought it would be good practice. We have one of the country's few velodromes about a 30 minute drive from my house. A few guys I know have track bikes and are trying to get a regular group together on night a week. I'm not sure how track riding will translate to tri fitness, but it does sound like a good excuse to get a bike workout in. Anyone here ever ride on a track before?

Yes, I've ridden in a couple of 'velodromes' (they are outdoors, so maybe not quite what you're talking about).  I've ridden in a couple of causal criteriums in them.  It's definitely a different world of cycling.  A lot of fun.  It will improve your handling skills!

Yep. but I do the same thing.  I suspect that many of us do, in one form or another.  Or maybe I'm just projecting my obsessive nature onto other people.  Wink

I'm game for 10.  I think I went overboard some this week, but 5.2 additional is doable for Jan.  21.9 that is GREAT.  At my weight watchers meeting today there were about 50+ people at the meeting and the total weight loss was 53 lbs.  We rock!!!  Great job everyone.  Week two here we come.

Agenda for Sunday...Long run of 7 miles. Then I go into a taper for my 10K next Sun.  Will still do my biking classes (tues and Thurs morning), swimming and core workouts.  Runs will be shorter and earlier in the week but higher intensity.  Let's hope the rain holds off.

I think my loss was party deyhdration after a double workout the day before.  I stepped on the scale today and was back at 165.  But I'll leave my goal at my new adjusted goal.  This has been great motivation.  It definitely helped me make some good decisions over the last week.

I'm planning to get a long run in today.  If I'm able to get out during the daylight, I'll shoot for 10-12 miles.  If I'm stuck at dusk or later, I'll hit the Y and run another 6 or 7 on the track.  There's only so much of that I can stand!
