Hey running shoe questions. Finally something I know a little about. Different shoes (even within a single brand) will last different periods. I have even experienced different life spans from one model year to the next. If you are wearing a shoe that is right for your size and foot type, a quality shoe should last you 300-500 miles. I'm actually on my blackberry right now so I can't look it up, but for some reason I seem to remember that you wear Brooks Beasts. If so, for reference, I wore my last pair of beasts for probably 400 miles while I waited for the newer edition of my asics kayanos to come out. But Tammy is right. If you think your getting pain as a result of your shoes, switch them out. Even if you wear your current shoes on an alternating basis for another 50 miles while your breaking in the new shoes, you will quickly be able to determine if your pain is coming from your shoes or from too much too soon. Hope this helps

This morning had my swim and performed my longest set of 1000m. Overall was a good workout. Last week I started obsessing on my time and speed and was starting to get ahead of myself. This morning during the swim I told myself forget the time just work on technique, stroke count and buiding endurance. It now feels like I'm floating, I don't have that seeking feeling anymore, my strokes are consistant and I'm comfortable with my breathing. Progress is so much fun.

i have a question about HRM.  i had one that i got for $30 (MSRP $150) on pricepoint.com and when i wore the watch in the water for the first time it filled up with water and is now worthless.  so my question is, which HRM would you suggest for a poor college student?  the one i had was made from sette and it was highly disappointing.  good thing i only paid $30!!

What would you suggest for HIM nutrition, race day? I am intrigued with Infinit, seems like a good concept, but have never tried it. In my past races (olympics), I've used gels, shot blox and endurolytes, that's it. I'm a bit worried about messing up my race by not getting the nutrition part right.

Hey Tammy, What kind of nutrition plan did you use for your IM races?

Thanks,
Mace

I LOVE infinit...Michael...is great ...give hima  calland he will totally hook you up.  I order a batch and ended up not liking it.. I called they gave me a refund and helped me find a formula I liked...great people

The thing about it is its hard to use on the run unless you use a fuel belt.

For my HIM Id use it on the bike and just use gels/water for my run... the good thing is to have a back up plan... sometimes race day- what you are used to just doesnt cut it....luckily there is stuff on the course!

Hey Tammy, What kind of nutrition plan did you use for your IM races? Thanks, Mace

Both years I used infinit on the bike... I think my formula was about 240 cal per bottle...so I tried to do one an hour ( Ihad three on my bike and had three in special needs)  I think I finished about 5 both years.

Id also grab a banana half at the aid staions if I could- a simple 50 calories.

I also ate a clif bar both years..Id eat it inthe first half of the ride.... my stomach likes to have alittle solid food.  Too late and it messes with your tummy onthe run (well for me).

The plan was to do mostly water and gels on the run.. but once it gets tough its EASY to grab the coke and the fruit  and the pretzels and whatever you feel like

I did try to do between 2-250 cal/ hour on the bike and 100-200 on the run... its harder to digest when your hr is higher

You have to find what works for you... train with it then race with it

I was talking to a woman the other day who has done a number of IMs. She was saying that her primary goal is to keep herself in position to run the whole marathon, that she passes a ton of people not by being really fast, but simply by being able to run the whole thing rather than walk it. With this as her goal, she has her watch set up up ring an alarm if her HR goes above 145 (I think that was the number), and if it does, she slows down until her HR is back under the threshold. Do any of you use that sort of control system, or how do you decide if you're pushing too hard? I'm competitive, and I know that in some of my past races I've pushed myself too hard on the bike because I got sucked into racing people....

Yes.  I'm a BOPPER - I'm one of the last ones out of the water.  Then, being tuned with my HR and running, I'm able to pass a couple of hundred peeps along the way that kicked my azz during the swim and were out 30 - 45 min. before me.

Its all about staying within  your HR zones  Sometimes its hard to do during races.  For IM I was suppose to stay Z3 on the bike....where in a HIM Id go Z4 on the ride.  I mean if you are fit and have done HIMs before Id try to push Z4 the whole thing...withthe proper training youshould be able to .... for IM its a different story... you can have a plan but likely youll end up going by how you feel.

I have an indoor Tri coming up at the end of March.  It's a 10 minute swim, 10 minute rest, 20 minute bike, 10 minute rest, 15 minute run.   For something this short, is there really any strategy besides just going as hard as you can?

On the topic of HR zones I have a question. The more fit you are and the more you work your heart your resting HR will usually go down. Now apply that to your trainign with your HR zones. Do you want to be able to continue to do more work and have a lower HR? or are you trying to increase how high your HR is at each zone?

Well when you first start training your zones may go up slightly (which is fine and normal) but the main thing you want to happen is for example.... lets say my Zone 2 runs are now 9:00 min miles.... by the end of the summer with proper training I may get down to an 8:30 or better pace...same HR but faster pace....  you will just become more efficient
Its a wonderful thing!! make sense?
