Expert 2355 Madison, Wisconsin | Subject: RE: tripletmom01 mentor group - CLOSED How is everyone's Feb training coming along? I guess I could say I have been slacking a little bit. I have not put in the time on PT for my shoulder that I should be doing, an I have missed a few of my longer sessions on the bike, but that was due primarily to time schedules with work. My run training has progressed nicely and I am looking forward to putting in a few more strong weeks before I go into my HM training. Weather is getting better outside! |

Feb hasn't been what I was hoping for. The weather has made riding not very fun. When the weather decides to cooperate I'll be able to do longer rides. Running is going well. The thing that has been most exciting is joining a masters class. I've only gone a few times but I can already tell a difference. |

Well you could take a half marathon plan... such as Hal Higdeons http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/index.htm (Ilike his- he has three levels you can chose to follow also). I think it has you running 6 days a week.... replace 1 or two WITH a bike and add another bike and a swim or two to thr un days and you have something. Id at least use his long run build up. |

62 | Subject: RE: tripletmom01 mentor group - CLOSED So I was really excited to try out some clip-on aerobars (Profile Design Jammers) I recently purchased off of Amazon. Was able to attach them without any trouble and started my workout. Just a few minutes into it my triceps and rear deltoids started to burn. After playing around with my position, I realized these aerobars probably aren't going to work for me. When my hands are on the aero-bar's hand grips, my elbows are pushed back too far. I can't support my torso with my frame so I have to use muscle. If I shift arms forward so that my hands extend past the aerobar and my wrists hit the hand grips, I feel like I can support myself for a long time in that position. I'm guessing I bought the wrong aerobars but is there anything else I should try before returning them? |

Expert 834 Medina, MN | Subject: RE: tripletmom01 mentor group - CLOSED I'm also 6'3" and have the same aerobars, and haven't really experienced anything like what you're talking about. Where are the pads relative to your handlebar? What is the angle of your elbows when you're riding on the aerobars? Shoot for 90 degrees. You can slide the actual aerobars forwards and backwards to adjust, and the pads slide on the bars. It sounds like you may just need to move the bars forward, and move the pads back to the back of the bars. Also, you may need to adjust your seat a bit. The difference between riding with your hands on the handlebars and your elbows close to the handlebars does change things a bit, and I ended up moving my seat forward in order to not be too stretched out. I will say that with longer arms, if you're holding the hand grips, the pads hit on your forearm, rather than actually on your elbow, so that might be a bit less than perfect, but I don't find it terribly uncomfortable. Personally, my issue is getting them far enough apart to be comfortable, due to the shape of my handlebar (where it tapers). I ended up rotating the pads a bit and that's helped, but I still have some work to do. |

I'm guessing I bought the wrong aerobars but is there anything else I should try before returning them? i got the same aerobars and the way my LBS explained the fit is these aerobars are made to be shorter than most that way you don't have to change your road position on the bike. since they are shorter you will use more of your core to support your body rather than putting a lot of weight on your arms. if you had other aerobars you would have to change your bike fit but then you wouldn't be as comfortable when riding on the hoods. so......he jammers were made so you can have a comfortable aero position while still being able to keep the original road position. hope this helps |

Member 54 Corpus Christi, TX | Subject: RE: tripletmom01 mentor group - CLOSED My 1st tri is about 3 weeks away and I was wondering about socks. Is there a big benefit by going sock-less? And if you do go sock-less should vaseline, body-glide, or baby powder be used to reduce blisters? I'm asking about both the bike and run. |

62 | Subject: RE: tripletmom01 mentor group - CLOSED Thanks for everyone's feedback on my aerobar dilemma. I have a few pictures of me on the bike and would like opinions. I still don't feel great using the aerobars 'correctly' and wonder if there may be something else wrong with my posture on the bike. Anyone know how I can post them? If I click on Insert/Edit Image button while trying to post it asks me for a URL and doesn't allow me to upload an image. Thanks! |

OK- I am no bike fitter but from what I do know- its a lot about right angles.... so the angle between your forearm and upperarm needs to be smaller...can you either move your seat a bit forward or your bars a bit back? I think there should also be a right angle between your upperarm and your side or back... you are pretty close there. Have you been able to go outside? You willget the rel feel for it out there....it takes a little while toget used to. sorry- not much help- huh? I may have an article somewhere- let me see if I can dig it out.... mnardulli - 2010-02-28 8:38 PM Thanks Tammy! Expert 834 Medina, MN | Subject: RE: tripletmom01 mentor group - CLOSED I'm also far from an expert, but I think the reason you're getting more triceps workout in pic #2 is due to your elbow angle. I'd definitely try moving your seat forward, and see if that feels better. Also, you might want to try tilting the aerobars up just a bit and see if that helps. What do you think about the height of your handlebars generally? You have them up quite a ways, and you'd definitely be more aero if you have the flexibility to move them down a bit. I can't tell from the pictures, but how do you have the aerobars set up? Are they as wide as they can go on your handlebars? Are the pads all the way back on the extension bars? Are the extension bars all the way forward, or part way? Do you have the pads straight or angled in a bit? Some of this stuff I'm asking because I'm still trying to optimize my own set up on these things, so I'm not really sure what's ideal.... My other novice bike-fitter comment is that I think your seat might be a touch too high too, and that could be potentially tied in with your achilles stuff. I always think if my seat is too low that my knees hurt, if it's too high my achilles hurt, and if it's just right, well, then they both hurt, just less . Edited by MLJ 2010-03-01 10:09 AM |
