Question about the bike...For my first few rides, I averaged 16 mph.  I wasn't trying to kill it, but I wasn't going easy either.  I felt pretty good about this and expected my averages to improve significantly after building some endurance and muscle power on the bike, especially because I planned to push it harder after getting thru that initial "break in" period.

Well, I've done about 15 rides now (distances between 15 and 50 miles), and it seems that no matter what I do, I average 16 mph, whether I do 30 miles or 50 miles, it’s the same.  This seems strange to me.  I don't really know what a realistic expectation is, but I was hoping to get to that 18-20mph average that seems common among the strong athletes.  I consider myself young and athletic, and I've been disappointed with the last few rides because I'm starting to doubt I'll ever get any faster.

My experience in other sports (and strength training) is that the big muscles, like quads, hamstrings, and glut majors get strong fairly quickly and a person tends to see some nice immediate results.  So this was my expectation for the bike, but so far I’ve been surprised.

In fairness to myself, I averaged 17.5 mph on my 20 miler this morning, so maybe I’m getting better.  I’m just worried that on the day of the HIM, I’ll have to go 12 mph to leave enough in the legs for the run…which would make for a very long bike time.

Are my results typical?  Can I expect it to get better with more rides?  Do you think it’s a mental block I have?  I know that happens sometimes to runners who just get used to a certain pace regardless of the distance.

This may sound like a stupid question, but is your cycling computer set-up to stop when you stop.  If you encounter a lot of intersections on your rides and your computer is counting your time stopped at lights etc in your average you are always going to have a difficult time getting up to 18-20 mph.

If you are truly averaging in the mid teens for your actual riding time, you probably need to work on adding some longer speed intervals into your work.  These aren't sprints, but 60-90 second intervals pushing a fairly big gear with ~3minutes of rest between intervals.  Cylcing is also highly cumulative and some gains can take a while for some people to build.

Thanks for the advice.  Yes, my computer stops when I stop at the lights.  However, I do slow down as I approach an intersection to try to time the green lights.  I know that slows the pace a little, but I think it's just that I need to be more patient and not expect too much speed gain too early.  I think my legs just simply aren't that strong yet and are taking a little longer that I thought to strengthen.  We'll see, I guess, over the coming months.

Unfortunately it takes years to see big gains on the bike.  I used to ride solo and never could average over 16 mph.  I hooked up with a group in GA and saw major improvements.  During that year with the group, I saw my averages jump to 20 mph and over 22 mph while riding with the group.  Some of the people I used to ride with are now averaging over 25 mph on group rides and 22-33 mph on solo rides.  They started about the same time as I did. I've been gone from the group for 3 years now and my ride averages have dropped back down to the 17-18 range.

I'm not sure what it was about riding with a group that worked for me.  Several factors could have been at play.
   1)  Competition--we are guys after all
   2)  Consistency--I was riding 3-4 times a week with the group at a fast pace
   3)  Trading pulls with drafting--just like intervals...hard 2-5 min efforts followed by rest

You can do all this by yourself...it is just a lot harder.  Consistency, intervals, consistency are probably the key.

I have to apologize....work has been killing me and I haven't had much time to "surf".  I have had time to get some random inspires out but I'm behind on our thread.  I will try to catch up today.

bmason - 2010-02-01 10:35 AM Cozmo, I am really bummed for you on the bike scam!  Wow that ticks me off that people in this world pull that kind of stuff.

I had a business trip in Florida and spent a day with my parents and brother in Sarasota.  It was really nice to get outside to run.   It was 75 degrees but really windy as a storm was blowing in on Saturday.  I thought I had been maintaining some running fitness from my treadmill but after a 5 1/2 mile run at a 7:45 pace in the wind, I am still sore!  Do you guys think that real running is that different than a treadmill?  My swim this morning helped bring my lactic acid level down a little but my quads still hurt going up/down stairs.  Maybe this is part of getting old (43).

Do you guys/gals experience the same soreness or is it just me?

By the way...we did 8x50 golf drill today and my combined time/strokes was a low of 70 and a high of 76.   My stroke count ranged from 23 to 26.

Running in the wind is harder than you think and will take a TON out of you.  A lot of my runs here in Colorado are planned around the wind.  I try not to run directly into a 20mph wind.  I had a run with my brother in Cheyenne, WY once with a serious 20-30 mph crosswind.  We literally were leaning sideways into it.  I was glad it was an out and back so I could even out my body.

Awesome golf scores!  I haven't had time in the pool since i suggested the game.  My stroke counts average 28-30 though.  Which will put me over your score by quite a bit.

AbbieR - 2010-02-01 11:46 AM Cat- For my HIMs I just wear tri shorts and tri top.  I use DeSoto shorts.  Even during my IMs I only bike in tri shorts, as I do ALL of my riding in tri shorts.  Bike shorts have too much padding for me now.

Yet another clothing question - do the tri tops have built in support, or do you wear the sports bra of your choice underneath?

Cat

I will either use a tri-top with the built-in shelf support or I have a few tops with no support and I just wear a sports bra under it.

Are you riding the same terrain for the long and short rides?  If I ride local, I usually only average 15-16 MPH due to traffic lights, morons on the bike path, head-wind, hills and other random stuff.  But if I drive north and ride, I can average about 18 MPH because the course is less hilly and only need to stop 2x for 50 mile loop!!

Total Immersion Stuff is very good.  I really like that our swim coaches uses a lot of the drills but pushes us hard and adds to the workout to build endurance.  I found a great visualization site called swim smooth http://www.swimsmooth.com/

I took a clinic 2 years ago.....it helped in technique, but I've really slacked on doing the drills.

I am wondering here. Does anybody really go ocean swimming? It scares the crap out of me here. To give you an idea I am in Volusia county alot (first 'red' county from the top, it kind of sticks out)

Even Lake swimming scares me because I use to take a lot of pictures in Gainesville and sometimes I would see 10-20 gators at a time.

Yep...both sharks and gators can be intimidating.  Shark bits in Florida are rarely fatal although a common occurrence.  I seem to remember that they mostly occur in the surf and are thought to be mistaken identity.  Get past the breakers fast!  Gators are more afraid of you that you are of them.  I know everyone says that but I have first hand experience with a lot of alligators.  Largest one I've caught was 7feet long.  I missed on my first attemp and talk about unnerving--pitch black, scared undergrad holding the flashlight, gator rolls out of my grasp, no clue where it is inthe muddy murky water, stand still until you figure out where the sharp end is, attempt again and this time sit on the damn thing, wear it out for 30 minutes and then let all the students get pictures holding a monster gator.

Alligators avoid people but love dogs.  Just don't dog paddle.

I guess for all of the whinning I do about the cold weather, snow, and inability to get outside for 4 months, Illinois does have the advantage of swimming without fear of being eaten!  A monster carp or catfish are the ugliest thing we get and they pretty well stay on the bottom of the lakes.  Swimming in ocean waves would be enough to freak me out.  Is that hard to get used to turning to breat and getting a wave of saltwater?  How do you keep your course with the tides coming in?

At the end of our swim drills yesterday, our coach had us do a timed 20 minute swim and I was pleased that I felt relaxed and got 22x100s in using a easy pace.

I need to get unsqueamish about just swimming in murky/mucky water.

Bret and other "swimmers":  so when you said you got 22x100s in, does that mean you did all those without stopping.  My question also comes from swim workouts I've been doing.
http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=1279

For instance, the main set of Day 3 is this:Main:
3 x 200’s on Cruise interval
4 x 50’s with low stroke count. Rest= :15
3 x 100’s on Cruise interval
4 x 50’s with even lower stroke count. Rest= :15

I'm not sure by this when I'm supposed to stop, or when to keep going.

I am far from being a real swimmer but our new masters coach has helped me make great strides for this year.  Every day that we come in, he has a dry erase board with our workout.  There are usually 10-12 different drills with each being 200s to 400s.  It could be kicking only, skulling or banana boat (feet first on back using hands to propel in circular motion), balance drill, push and glide, etc, and some days he will do things like a timed 800 without stopping, and last Friday a 20 minute swim without stopping.  Below is our Monday workout 2.08 and golf scores.

Drills really do help with form, but if you are swimming alone it takes discipline to do them on your own.

Me, too!  I got in the lake and just about started hyperventialting because of how all the lake muck was sticking to me and wrapping around my neck.  Uuugh!  So gross.  I had practiced my open water swims in a very clean lake, and then encountered the conditions at the race.  Every 4th stroke was pulling the seaweed-stuff off my neck!

We're digging out of our most recent snow.

I was wondering if everyone would repost what races they are training for this year.  I'm not sure if I have straight who is doing an IM, HIM, etc.

My primary goal is the 7/11/10 - the Musselman Half Ironman.  I'm also registered for a Danskin Women's Sprint Tri and assuming I stay healthy, the Philadelphia Marathon in November.

I'm planning a half marathon and some other 5 and 10ks, and a sprint or olympic tri in there before the HIM, but they are really just for training purposes - def. not A races.
